The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked media reports suggesting it has recognised specific individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), as well as reinstated a particular official of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 8, 2025, by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the Commission described the reports as “false and misleading.”
According to the statement, the names of certain Labour Party officials currently listed on INEC’s website were uploaded earlier based on a prior court order unrelated to the recent Supreme Court ruling concerning the party’s leadership dispute.
INEC also clarified that the name of the National Secretary of the PDP had not been recently added or reinstated, emphasizing that no changes were made in that regard.
“As a law-abiding institution, the Commission is carefully studying the judgement of the Supreme Court on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public in due course,” Oyekanmi stated.
The clarification comes amidst ongoing leadership tussles in both the Labour Party and PDP, with factions laying claims to key positions following the Supreme Court’s recent rulings. INEC’s latest statement indicates that no formal recognition has been granted to any group, as consultations and legal reviews are still underway.
