Renowned Highlife icon and cultural ambassador, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at the age of 95.
The legendary musician, best known for his signature song Gwo Gwo Gwo Gwo, died on Friday night at about 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.
His eldest son, Mr. Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the sad news in a telephone conversation with our correspondent.
Mike Ejeagha began his illustrious music career in the mid-20th century and remained a towering figure in the evolution of music in the Igbo language for over six decades. He was celebrated for his masterful ability to weave Igbo folklore, proverbs, and moral teachings into captivating Highlife tunes that resonated across generations.
His first major hit was recorded in 1960 — the year Nigeria gained independence — marking the beginning of a musical journey that would inspire countless artists and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people.
