Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres currently tops the European Golden Boot standings after a phenomenal campaign in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, scoring an impressive 39 goals.
With a total of 58.5 points, Gyokeres holds a narrow lead over Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid, who trails by just 0.5 points despite scoring 10 fewer goals. The tight race between the two forwards is being closely watched as the season draws to a close.
Mbappe, with 29 goals and 58 points, remains firmly in contention due to the scoring coefficient system used in the Golden Boot rankings. Goals scored in Portugal are multiplied by 1.5, while goals in Europe’s top five leagues — including Spain’s La Liga — carry a coefficient of 2.0, giving players in those leagues a point advantage per goal.
Mbappe added to his tally with a goal against Sevilla on Sunday and will have one final opportunity to overtake Gyokeres when Real Madrid faces Real Sociedad in their last La Liga match of the season on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the top five, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, and Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski continue to post strong numbers in the Golden Boot race.
