Gunmen have reportedly killed 17 people in Plateau State’s Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

The attack occurred in the LGA’s Heipang hamlet in the early hours of Thursday.

Julius Pam, a heartbroken dad in the community, confirmed the attack in Jos on Thursday.

Pam said, “Good morning, sir. On the sad news, there was an attack early this morning in Heipang community. 17 people were killed including my brother, his wife, and children, all killed.”

Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, was unavailable for comment, but sources at the command headquarters claimed security operatives had been deployed to the town.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has inaugurated a Security and Information Centre with the goal of improving public access to security-related information and communicating it to the appropriate authorities for fast action.

The governor stated in a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, that the Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency established the center to bridge the communication gap between the general public and the government.

He stated that the center will use simple technology to build a toll-free hotline, 080 0000 5555, that will allow citizens to exchange information without incurring expenses.

Governor Mutfwang stated that the center is already open and that individuals can call. He emphasized that the state government will pay for all incoming calls on people’s behalf.

The governor added that the effort will allow the government to quickly receive early warning signs and intervene, as well as seek feedback on state development issues.

He encouraged residents to report security concerns in their areas with confidence, knowing that all information will be treated with the strictest confidentially.

“Operating around the clock, the center is geared towards efficient and effective service delivery, enabling citizens to report any issues relevant to the state,” the statement added.
