The Vice-Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu (GUU), Prof. Cele U. Njoku, has welcomed the full accreditation granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to the university’s programmes assessed during the 2026 academic session, including the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) programme.
The accreditation covers major professional programmes including Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D), Nursing Science (BNSc), Optometry, Engineering and Law, as well as programmes in the Management and Social Sciences, according to a statement by public affairs analyst Sleek Ogbo-Ogwo.
Reacting to the development, Njoku described the accreditation as a significant milestone for the university’s professional education programmes.
“This confirms GUU is now a complete destination for professional education. We are producing doctors, pharmacists, nurses, optometrists, engineers, lawyers, and business leaders who will compete globally,” Njoku said.
The Chancellor of the university, Sir Gregory Iyke Ibe Jnr, also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to developing world-class facilities to support teaching, research and professional training.
The accreditation comes amid a series of developments recorded by GUU during the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to the statement, the university’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences was admitted into the Association of Medical Schools in Africa (AMSA) on March 28, 2026.
The institution also recorded international student participation in August, when 500-Level student Enukora Lucky represented Nigeria at the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) General Assembly in Kazakhstan.
The statement described Lucky as the only delegate from a private university and the only delegate from the South East.
GUU also recorded graduations in several health-related disciplines during the session, including medicine, pharmacy, nursing, medical laboratory science and physiotherapy.
The university said the developments reflect its growing focus on practical professional training and its contribution to the development of healthcare professionals in Nigeria.
On infrastructure, the university’s 1,000-bed Teaching Hospital at Ezinnachi is reportedly nearing completion.
According to the statement, the facility is expected to strengthen GUU’s capacity for clinical training, medical research and healthcare delivery. The statement also described the project as a major clinical infrastructure development among private universities in the South East.
In sports, GUU finished second overall at the maiden Abia State Tertiary Schools Sports Fiesta, adding another achievement to the institution’s 2025/2026 academic session.
The university said its academic, professional, clinical and extracurricular programmes are designed to promote all-round student development.
The latest NUC accreditation further expands GUU’s portfolio of fully accredited professional programmes and comes as the university continues to invest in academic programmes, healthcare training and supporting infrastructure.
Admission into all fully accredited programmes is ongoing, the statement concluded.
