Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reiterated that meaningful economic policies should prioritize development that improves people’s lives rather than focusing solely on economic growth statistics.
Governor Otti made the assertion on Monday, July 27, while receiving the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Prof. James A. Robinson, alongside a delegation of distinguished professors from leading universities in the United States. The delegation, led by former Minister of Education and Health, Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, paid the Governor a courtesy visit at the Government House, Umuahia.
Welcoming the visitors, Governor Otti congratulated Prof. Robinson on winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, describing it as a privilege to finally meet the globally renowned development economist, whose academic works and reputation he had long admired.
The Governor, a First-Class Economics graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, emphasized that development economics remains the most critical branch of the discipline because it directly addresses the quality of life and well-being of citizens.
He explained that economic growth does not automatically translate into development, noting that impressive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures can still leave citizens worse off if population growth outpaces economic expansion.
“You can have economic growth without development. For example, a GDP growth of three or five percent may appear impressive, but if the population is growing at ten percent, then in reality, you are declining because there are more mouths to feed than available resources,” Governor Otti said.
According to him, his administration deliberately designs policies that tackle the root causes of poverty, unemployment, and low productivity rather than pursuing growth figures that fail to improve living standards.
Governor Otti stressed that breaking the cycle of poverty requires addressing structural challenges while simultaneously creating opportunities for citizens to become productive.
He added that while governments must provide an enabling environment for businesses and investment, they must also build the capacity of people to take advantage of those opportunities.
“You may inject funds into the economy, but if the people do not have the capacity to utilize those resources, the effort becomes ineffective,” he stated.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continuous learning and expressed the readiness of the Abia State Government to collaborate with Prof. Robinson and other international scholars in research, policy development, leadership training, and knowledge exchange.
Speaking earlier, Prof. James Robinson, a professor at the University of Chicago and the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, expressed delight at visiting Abia State. He said he looked forward to discussions on Nigeria’s development challenges, institutional reforms, Governor Otti’s policy approach, and areas where global academic partnerships could contribute.
Also speaking, Prof. Leander Heldring of Northwestern University, USA, observed that the prosperity of nations depends largely on the quality of their institutions and leadership. He commended the developmental strides recorded in Abia State and praised the reforms being implemented by the Otti administration.
Similarly, Prof. Chima Korie of Marquette University, USA, said the transformation taking place in Abia has become a source of pride for Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora.
According to him, if every state in Nigeria adopted the same approach to governance and development as Abia, there would be little justification for books highlighting the country’s governance failures.
Leading the delegation, Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between Abia State and the global academic community through research partnerships, policy advisory support, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
He described Abia as a model of prudent economic management, noting that Governor Otti’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, transparency, productivity, and value for money aligns closely with the development principles championed by Prof. Robinson.
Also at the meeting, the President of the Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA) and former Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, disclosed that Prof. Robinson’s scholarly works had significantly influenced his academic career over the past two decades.
He explained that the Abia State Leadership Academy, established through an Executive Order by Governor Otti, is committed to raising ethical, empathetic, and institution-focused leaders capable of providing transformative leadership in Abia State and beyond.
The meeting was attended by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D, members of the State Executive Council, and other senior government officials.
