Ms. Gladys Linus, popularly known as Glad Unique, has regained her freedom after legal proceedings began following concerns about her detention that she raised with Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti during his recent monthly media chat.
Glad Unique, who had been remanded at the Aba Correctional Centre, was released following an application for bail filed before the Abia State High Court by her legal counsel.
Her release comes days after Governor Otti directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN, to investigate the circumstances surrounding her arrest, arraignment and subsequent remand.
The Governor had issued the directive after the matter was raised during his media interaction with journalists, prompting concerns about the legal processes that led to her detention.
In response to the development, legal steps were taken to secure her freedom through the appropriate judicial channels, culminating in her release from custody.
The development has renewed discussions about the importance of protecting citizens’ fundamental rights, ensuring access to justice and upholding due process in the administration of criminal justice.
It also highlights the responsibility of relevant institutions to ensure that individuals facing criminal allegations are treated fairly and afforded the legal protections guaranteed under Nigerian law.
While her release brings an end to her immediate detention, it does not necessarily determine the outcome of any underlying legal proceedings.
Observers have continued to emphasise that the justice system must serve as a safeguard for citizens’ rights rather than a tool for intimidation, victimisation or persecution.
The development reinforces the principle that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, irrespective of an individual’s social status or circumstances.
As Glad Unique reunites with her family and loved ones, attention may now turn to the circumstances surrounding her initial detention and any outstanding legal issues arising from the case.
ABN TV reports that the development followed concerns raised during Governor Otti’s recent media chat and subsequent legal efforts to secure her release.
