Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi believes Finidi George deserved to succeed Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles head coach.

The 53-year-old, who was previously an assistant to Peseiro, was unveiled as new handler of the three-time African champions this week.

Awoniyi stated that Finidi has the right character and quality to lead the team.

“I think being the assistant, with what he has achieved for the country and the humility that he has shown to the players; like I always say, everyone deserves a great opportunity. And we have a lot of players and a good coach as well, it’s just to get it right on the field,” the former Union Berlin striker told popular journalist, Tobi Adepoju, in an exclusive interview.

Awoniyi is expected to be included in Super Eagles’ squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

The two games will be played on June 7 and June 10 respectively.
