A tragic incident occurred during the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, as a spectator died after falling from the stands, UEFA confirmed to AFP subsidiary SID.
The fan reportedly fell from the central tier during the first period of extra time, landing in the press box located in the lower tier. Emergency responders, including paramedics and police, quickly arrived to assist.
A UEFA spokesperson described the incident as a “medical emergency” and confirmed that a fan had “sadly” died during the match.
Both teams expressed their condolences following the final, which ended in a 5-3 penalty shootout victory for Portugal after a 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time.
At the post-match press conference, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente offered heartfelt condolences: “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life.”
A representative from the Portuguese side also extended sympathies, saying the incident “casts a shadow on our victory today.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez called the incident “extremely sad news.”
The supporter is believed to have fallen approximately eight meters. Details surrounding how or why the fall occurred remain unclear.
