Ebem Ohafia Announces Date For 2022 New Yam, Igba Ekpe Festivals [See Activities]

The people of Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia L.G.A of Abia State have announced the date for the 2022 new yam festival, known as IRI JI which will coincide with the masquerade festival, called Igba Ekpe.

“I, HRH Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, JP, Kpoke I of Ekeluogo Ebem Autonomous Community and the Natural and Paramount Ruler of Ebem Kingdom, Ohafia, in my capacity as the Ezieogo Ebem, acting on the advice of the traditional yam barons (Ndi Ezie Ji) and in consultation with the Ezie Ebem in Council during her Igbo weekly meeting of Friday 15 July, 2022 hereby announce to all Umu-Ebem (sons and daughters of Ebem Kingdom) their friends, In-laws, well-wishers at home and abroad, that the Iri Ji (Annual New Yam Festival) of the people of Ebem Kingdom in Ohafia for the year 2022 has been scheduled for SATURDAY, ORIE, SEPTEMBER 3, 2022,” a release from the royal palace of Paramount Ruler of Ebem kingdom, HRH Ukoha Kalu Ukoha said.

The annual festival usually comes as a moment to express gratitude to God for the success of farming season as well as the harvest period.

Paramount Ruler of the kingdom, Eze Ukoha Kalu Ukoha JP while urging the people to celebrate with all sense of modesty said in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country, any contrary announcement on the public gathering by the state or federal government will supersede the new yam festival and activities lines up for it.

“AS always in this auspicious and trying period, whatever directives and pronouncements, that may be made by either the Abia State Government, or the Federal Government of Nigeria will supersede these proposals. In order Words, Umu Ebem have to listen to and obey the Governments’ instructions on Covid 19, security, and or other matters.

“The Iri Ji/Igba Ekpe (New Yam) Festival is a cultural festival. Consequently, we should celebrate within our primordial confines. NOT ON THE TARRED ROADS.

“The usual traditional procession will NOT be held. The Royal train will leave the EBEM UJURUEZIE PALACE straight to Abum for the usual ABUM ASSEMBLY followed by the joyful and peaceful celebrations,” he said.
