The funeral of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Gondomar, a town near Porto in northern Portugal.
Local priest Father José Manuel Macedo initially announced the services would be held at 4 p.m. on Friday but later confirmed they had been rescheduled to Saturday morning due to minor administrative delays. The family, still in Spain as of Thursday evening, needed to complete necessary paperwork before the brothers’ bodies could be repatriated.
According to Father Macedo, a wake will be held at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral mass at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the town’s main Catholic church.
Gondomar holds deep emotional significance for Jota, who began his football career at a local club there. It is also believed to be where he met his wife. The family has not yet indicated whether the funeral will be private or open to the public.
The tragic deaths of Jota and his brother in a car accident near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, have triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the football community.
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, and current manager Arne Slot were among those who expressed their condolences. Fellow Liverpool players also shared heartfelt messages in memory of their teammate.
Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister wrote on Instagram: “I can’t believe it. I will always remember your smiles, your anger, your intelligence, your companionship and everything that made you a person. It hurts a lot, we will miss you. Rest in peace, dear Diogo.”
Teammate Dominik Szoboszlai added: “Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are… Your smile and your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother.”
As the football world continues to mourn, Saturday’s service will offer a solemn farewell to one of Portugal’s beloved footballers and his brother, marking a moment of collective grief and remembrance.
