Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has been called a coward for failing to make good on his threat to publicly declare his choice of candidate for the 2023 presidential election and campaign for that candidate across the country.

Governor Wike told Rivers residents late last year that he would announce his presidential candidate choice by January, promising to travel from state to state campaigning for the candidate.

However, January has passed and the Governor has yet to announce his choice.

Recently, some of his aides took to social media, sharing a photo of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu with the caption “It’s about time.”

However, in a recent interview, Wike stated that he never disclosed to the public the method by which he would announce his preferred presidential candidate.

Wike is one of five disgruntled PDP governors known as the Integrity Group or G5, who have stood firm in their opposition to the North producing both the party’s national chairman and its presidential candidate.

The group has refused to campaign for Atiku in their respective states, citing the need for equity, fairness, and justice.

Dakuku Peterside, the former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, challenged the Rivers governor on Tuesday to name his candidate.

In response, Wike slammed the APC chieftain, claiming that he never promised to make his declaration in front of the camera. Wike also stated that he has not set a specific date in January for his declaration.

As Nigerians await the Governor’s and his colleagues’ decision, an APC chieftain, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has described the Governor as a coward and a confused man.

On Wednesday, Eze told DAILY POST that by failing to name his preferred candidate in January, the Governor had exposed himself as lacking in vision and capacity to influence the outcome of the 2023 Presidential election.

“Governor Nyesom Wike is a confused fellow. First, I earlier stated that Wike doesn’t know the type of politics that Atiku plays, and in his ignorance, he thought that Atiku is among those he can undermine but sadly for him he has succeeded to finish his political career so far in the 2023 general elections,” Eze said.

“To me, Wike is a coward and has no Presidential Candidate to support; he thought that by his threats, Atiku would succumb to his ploys.”

“By not naming his preferred candidate by now, he has succeeded in exposing himself.”

“It is late for him to name or join anybody and if he decides to name any of the presidential candidates, such a candidate is doomed,” he added.

Senator Shehu Sani, a former Nigerian lawmaker and social critic, has stated that Wike and the G5 governors are playing hard to get.

Sani predicted that their support for any presidential candidate would soon become irrelevant because voters would have made up their minds about who they wanted.

All attempts by DAILY POST to contact the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Chris Finebone, spokesman to the Governor, Kelvin Ebiri, and Hon. Ogbonna Nwoke, Rivers State Presidential Campaign Council spokesman, was futile, as none of the men returned our calls.
