The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024.
The winner’s prize has been doubled to $1 million, up from $500,000 in the 2022 edition, while the total prize money has risen by 45% to over $3.4 million from $2.4 million.
Patrice Motsepe, CAF President, emphasized the confederation’s ongoing commitment to advancing women’s football across Africa.
“The confederation is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa. The 100 percent increase in the prize money of the winner of the tournament and the 45 percent total increase should contribute to the increase of the salaries of women football players, coaches, and employees,” Motsepe said.
He further highlighted the steady improvement in the quality and standard of women’s football on the continent, describing it as “world-class”. Motsepe also expressed enthusiasm about the rising number of fans, broadcast viewers, and sponsors for the tournament.
