Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Allied People’s Movement has declared that Nigeria deserves better governance, promising to boost security, revive the economy, and enhance citizen welfare.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, on Monday, the party said its blueprint is designed to restore economic growth, create jobs, strengthen the productive sector and reform the country’s security architecture to better protect lives and property.
Recall that on May 14, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, alongside some of his loyalists in the Peoples Democratic Party, entered into a political alliance with the APM led by Yusuf Dantalle, in Ibadan ahead of the 2027 general elections.
On the same day, Makinde formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
He subsequently emerged as the APM’s presidential candidate on May 30, a development that has brought the party into the spotlight as one of the major opposition platforms expected to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.
According to the APM, the country’s mounting debt, the exit of multinational companies, the increasing cost of living and the migration of skilled professionals have further weakened Nigeria’s economy and public institutions, underscoring the need for a change in leadership.
The party stated, “The Allied People’s Movement has developed a pragmatic, wide-ranging governance blueprint that will swiftly resuscitate the productive sector, rebuild critical infrastructure, revamp the ailing economy, pull the nation from the brink of collapse and restore dignity and comfort to the lives of all citizens.
“The blueprint will also reshape the nation’s broken security architecture and effectively check acts of terrorism and guarantee the security of lives and property across the country.
“It is tragic that in the last 10 years, and especially the last three years, the All Progressives Congress has governed Nigeria without a coherent economic blueprint, resulting in totally confused, careless and rudderless governance, characterised by massive corruption and reckless anti-people policies.
“This has led to biting economic hardship, hyper-unemployment, skyrocketing inflation, collapsed infrastructure and widespread insecurity.”
The APM expressed concern over rising poverty, unemployment and inflation, saying the increasing cost of goods and services has made basic necessities unaffordable for many Nigerian families.
It continued, “The cost of basic commodities and services has become increasingly unaffordable, with many families in distress and unable to afford their daily meals and other basic necessities of life.
“Largely due to the APC government’s failures, in the last three years alone, official and independent reports indicate that no fewer than 628,000 Nigerians have been killed, while over 2.2 million others, including children and women, have been abducted. The poverty rate has hit a staggering 63 per cent, with an unemployment rate of over 33.3 per cent. More than 140 million Nigerians now live below the national poverty line.
“Due to worsening insecurity, a collapsed public service and economic inflation exacerbated by unhealthy taxes and tariffs, major multinationals have been exiting our nation in droves. Over 3.7 million Nigerian youths and professionals have fled the country in what is now known as the ‘Japa’ phenomenon, resulting in the worst brain drain ever, especially in our education and health sectors.
