A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Kalu Eni, has presented a proposal to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, advocating for a more transparent, peaceful, credible, and seamless primary election process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the proposal dated May 9, 2026, Prof. Eni stressed the need for the APC to strengthen internal democracy and restore confidence among party members, aspirants, and stakeholders through fair and inclusive primary elections.
According to him, many of the crises that emerge after party primaries including litigations, protests, defections, and internal divisions are often triggered by mistrust, lack of transparency, and feelings of exclusion during the selection process.
He warned that such challenges weaken party structures and negatively affect electoral performance during general elections.
To address these concerns, Prof. Eni proposed that every aspirant contesting governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly elections under the APC platform should be allowed to nominate ten trusted individuals to participate in the monitoring and management of the primary election process.
He further recommended that each aspirant should nominate two official observers in every ward where primaries would be conducted.
The APC stalwart also called for strict operational guidelines to ensure transparency and orderliness, insisting that all nominated officials and observers must operate only within their designated wards during the exercise.
According to the proposal, the identities and details of all nominated officials should be officially documented and recognised by the party before the commencement of the primaries.
Prof. Eni equally urged the APC leadership to adequately brief all stakeholders on the rules guiding the process in order to prevent confusion, misinformation, and unnecessary confrontation.
Highlighting the benefits of the proposed framework, he noted that it would reduce allegations of manipulation and imposition, improve accountability at the grassroots level, and strengthen confidence among aspirants, delegates, party faithful, and supporters.
He added that the proposal would also minimise post-primary conflicts and litigations, promote inclusiveness, strengthen internal democracy, and preserve party unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The integrity of the party’s primary election process must not only be protected, but must also inspire confidence among party members and the Nigerian public,” he stated.
Prof. Eni maintained that a transparent and credible primary election system would produce stronger candidates, deepen party loyalty, and position the APC as a model of democratic maturity and organisational discipline in Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that the adoption of the proposal would further consolidate the APC as a formidable political institution built on fairness, participation, transparency, and unity.
