Former Nigerian international, Peter Rufai has commended Super Eagles defender, William Troost-Ekong for his leadership role in the team despite Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Recall that the Nigerian international opened seven minutes before the break when Troost-Ekong nodded home his third goal of the tournament.

The Super Eagles were unbeaten in their previous 22 matches in the competition when scoring first, but the hosts hit back just after the hour mark as Kessie nodded in Adringa’s corner.

Reacting after the game, Rufai, who was a guest in Afrosport AFCON coverage, stated that Ekong has been so exceptional in the tournament.

“Ekong has shown skills of great leadership in the Super Eagles despite the team’s loss to Ivory Coast in the final.

“He has been so outstanding in the tournament, leading by example and I think he deserves great commendation.”
