Abia State University, Uturu, has suspended a Professor of Economics, Nnamdi Nwaeze, over comments he made on Facebook concerning the welfare and salaries of lecturers at the institution.
The university, in a statement by its Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Chijioke Nwogu, said the suspension followed social media posts attributed to the lecturer which it described as inimical to the interests of the university and uncomplimentary to its Visitor.
Professor Nwaeze had alleged that lecturers at the university were among the least paid in Nigeria, claiming that they were still being paid under the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government salary structure.
He further alleged that newer salary structures had not been implemented, while lecturers promoted between 2023 and 2026 had not received salaries corresponding to their new ranks.
The lecturer also claimed that some staff members were owed salaries dating back as far as 44 months, while deducted union dues were allegedly not remitted to ASUU.
He further alleged that professors at the institution earned less than 400-thousand naira monthly and questioned the disparity between their earnings and those of workers in other universities.
However, the university management said it had constituted an investigative panel to examine the issues raised.
The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place pending the outcome of the investigation.
