The Abia State Government has officially flagged off the State Accelerated Basic Education Programme, an initiative designed to enable learners to complete the six-year primary school curriculum within a three-year period.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a media briefing following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.
According to Kanu, the programme is targeted at individuals who missed out on formal basic education in their early years and did not obtain a First School Leaving Certificate. He noted that Abia is among the states implementing the initiative to bridge educational gaps and expand access to basic learning.
“This programme is specifically designed for those who, for one reason or another, were unable to complete their primary education. It provides them with an opportunity to achieve that within a shorter timeframe,” he said.
The programme is being executed by the State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, with the government encouraging interested residents to take advantage of the opportunity.
On teacher recruitment, the commissioner revealed that the results of oral interviews for Batch Two candidates who were shortlisted after a Computer-Based Test are currently being compiled.
He further disclosed that over 7,280 candidates scored above 40 percent in the CBT, assuring that successful applicants would be duly notified.
Kanu emphasized that the recruitment process is being conducted with transparency and fairness, adding that all qualified candidates would be given equal opportunity based strictly on merit.
The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen the education sector and improve human capital development across Abia.
