The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia as part of efforts to enhance security and improve public safety across the state.
The ban, approved by Governor Alex Otti, will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.
Announcing the development in a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the decision forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen security, improve traffic management, and establish a more organized transportation system in the state’s major urban centres.
According to the statement, all commercial motorcycle operators are required to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas on or before the effective date.
The government further disclosed that security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
It warned that any individual or operator found violating the ban would be arrested, while the motorcycle involved would be confiscated in accordance with the law.
“The policy forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security, enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and promote a more organized transportation system across the affected urban centres,” the statement noted.
The state government called on residents, transport operators, community leaders, and members of the public to cooperate fully with authorities in implementing the directive.
It emphasized that the measure is aimed at advancing the collective safety, security, and development of Abia State.
The government advised all affected persons to take immediate note of the directive and comply accordingly ahead of the June 22 enforcement date.Headline Options:
