Abia State government has cleared the air on the actual number of persons that died on the Tuesday accident at Waterside bridge in Aba, the commercial capital of the State, saying it’s only one person.
It says this is contrary to different figures being quoted on social media.
The state government also promised to assist in offsetting the medical bills of those injured in the accident.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Ekeoma along with the Senior Special Assistant Mr. Dodoh Okafor on Wednesday accompanied Governor Alex Otti represented by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba to visit victims of the accident at different hospitals in Aba, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH)
He said, “The Governor sympathized with the victims and thanked God for saving their lives. He promised that the government would take care of the bills of all the injured victims and would also assist them financially even as they recuperate.”
The state government says it has also ensured that some patients were transferred to where they would receive better medical care.
“The Government officially established that it was one life that was lost in the accident contrary to the different false figures being quoted on social media. The government is also in touch with the family of the dead victim and is making the necessary arrangements to assist them bury him.
“Government has since taken some measures to prevent future occurrence, some of which include:
“Constituting a task force to ensure that only vehicles, especially heavy-duty trucks that are roadworthy would henceforth ply our roads and that such vehicles must observe all safety rules.
“That all broken down vehicles on our roads are immediately removed in line with the previous directive given by the Governor in September”, the statement added.
He also said all heavy-duty trucks are only allowed to ply our roads between 8pm to 6:30 am.
