The managing director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr. Abba Aliyu, has revealed that approximately 80 million Nigerians still lack access to electricity.
Speaking at the Huawei Day 2025 Nigeria event, Aliyu emphasized the scale of the challenge and the agency’s ambitious goals. “REA is expected to provide stable power to 17.5 million residents, 237,000 MSMEs and 3,030 state-owned hospitals,” he stated.
Highlighting the importance of technological innovation in expanding rural electrification, Aliyu praised Huawei’s smart energy solutions. “As rural electricity expansion is critical, Huawei’s string inverter allows storage scaling with each battery pack having a built-in energy optimiser, which achieves 24/7 real-time active balancing, making smart monitoring essential. Huawei’s Smart PV Management System enables string-level PV monitoring and cell-level battery management, which reduces on-site maintenance by 50% and improves fault diagnosis speed by 80%,” he explained.
Also speaking at the event, the managing director of Ventura and Huawei Day partner, Engr. Obinna Agwu, underscored the partnership’s impact on rural electrification.
“Together, we are lighting up a greener Nigeria with rural solar projects, including the Ebonyi rural solar project, which uses Huawei SUN2000-100KTL inverters and LUNA2000-200kWh smart string energy storage systems (ESS). This site operates flawlessly with very high electricity availability,” he said.
Agwu added that Huawei’s solutions offer several benefits: “The key advantages of using Huawei solutions include all-in-one modular design, future-proofed scalability, simplified operation, and significantly reduced costs.”
Head of Huawei Digital Power Nigeria, Mr. Cruise Ni, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s energy goals. He said Huawei would continue working with partners to accelerate the nation’s energy transition. “We aim to bring stable, green, and sustainable power to more rural communities,” he stated.
