The Kaduna State Government has named His Highness, Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Chancellor of the Kaduna State University (KASU).

He succeeds the pioneer Chancellor, His Highness, Malam Tagwai Sambo, the Chief of Moro’a, who was appointed to the role in 2005.

A statement from Sir Kashim Ibrahim House announced the new appointment.

“On behalf of the government and people of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai is delighted to appoint His Highness, Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Chancellor of the Kaduna State University. In public life, His Highness has demonstrated a strong commitment to education.

“The Kaduna State Government has no doubt that as Chancellor, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi, would provide symbolic and substantive leadership in raising the profile of KASU as an emerging centre of learning on the national and global level.

“This appointment of the new chancellor comes at an exciting moment for KASU which is transiting to a multicampus structure with presence across the state.

The Presidency has described the attempt to link the dethronement of the former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to President Muhammadu Buhari as malicious and politically motivated.

Former Kano Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, had alleged that President Buhari ordered the dethronement of the former Emir.

But in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the Presidency said the President had no hand in the Kano crisis, emphasising that he had not been known to be meddling in local state affairs.

The Presidency also accused political opposition elements of spreading what it described as a ‘politically motivated and untrue insinuations’, saying it is unfair of the authors of the allegations to spread such against the President.

It also emphasised that issues surrounding appointment and control over local traditional authorities were specifically assigned to the state authorities by the 1999 Constitution.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has no involvement whatsoever in the dethronement of HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II from the position of Emir of Kano. All such insinuations are untrue, malicious and politically motivated.

“The President does not have a history of intervening in the affairs of any state in the country, unless the issue at hand is of national consequence. On such matters which impinge on national security, he has a duty of involvement as the law stipulates.

“As outlined in the Constitution, the appointment or removal of emirs and other traditional leaders is strictly within the jurisdiction of state governments. It is unfair and disingenuous of opposition politicians to try to link the situation in Kano State to the federal government and the Nigerian President.

“Although a retired General and former Military Head of State, President Buhari, clearly understands that under the current democratic dispensation, the government at the centre cannot read instructions or twist the arms of all or any of the 36 state governments making up the federation. They all have their powers specified under the Constitution.

“President Buhari commends the people of Kano for keeping calm in the past few days of the dethronement announcement. He prays that the will of Allah will be done at all times, and that the emirate/state and its people continue to experience progress irrespective of who is on the throne,” the statement said.

The New Emirs of Kano and Bichi, Aminu Ado Bayero and Nasiru Ado Bayero, are set to receive their appointment letters by 4pm Wednesday at the coronation Hall.

The Emirs, who are brothers and sons of the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, where appointed by the Kano state government after the dethronement of Sanusi over alleged flagrant disrespect of traditions and customs of the ancient city.

The Kano State government has denied the reports that the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has been banished from the state.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in the state, Ibrahim Muktar, stated this during his appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday.

He said, “You see, If you listen to the Secretary to the State Government when he was addressing the press on the issue of the removal of the emir from office, there was nowhere he said the emir was even banished from Kano State.

“So, the decision of the government was (that) the emir … as of Monday was removed from office and a new emir was appointed. The issue of banishment was not part of the decision of the Kano State Government.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja, the lawyers to the deposed emir said they have been unable to reach their client.

They also threatened to take legal action against the state government if they fail to release Sanusi within 24 hours.

In his reaction, Muktar explained that banished deposed traditional rulers had been existing since the colonial era.

He noted specifically that monarchs in the northern part of the country who were removed were taken out of their jurisdiction in order not to have two rulers in the same territory.

According to the commissioner, this has happened to many emirs such as the Emir of Gwandu who was removed and banished to Kaduna State.

He insisted that that has been the practice in the region in order to maintain peace and security in affected areas.

Muktar, however, said, “We have been hearing from the media that he has been banished but what I know is that he was taken out of Kano State.

“But banishment was not part of the decision of Kano State government … There is no such decision to the best of my knowledge.”

Former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwas has said Governor Abdullahi Ganduje removed Muhammadu Sanusi 11 as Emir of Kano on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kwankwaso, a former presidential aspirant on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, claimed on the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday morning that the “the governor of Kano himself have been saying that he has been given order to remove Sanusi,” even as he affirmed that the President has been intervening in the affairs of Kano State.

“President Buhari is getting involved in the affairs of Kano state,” Kwankwaso said.

The Presidency has not spoken on the sack of Sanusi since the former Emir of Kano was deposed by the Kano State Government on Monday.

But Buhari, had during a visit of a delegation from Kano State to the Aso Rock presidential villa some weeks ago said he will not interfere in the rift between the Emir and the his State Government.

The President had at that occasion, noted that he will be overstepping his bounds, constitutionally, if he get involved in the dispute between the monarch and Ganduje.

The BBC noted that the former Kano Governor did not provide any evidence to back his claim of the involvement of the President in the removal of the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria as Emir.

Kwankwaso, under whose tenure Sanusi was installed as the Emir in 2014, also claimed in the BBC interview that the people of Kano were saddened the deposition of the Emir.

He described the deposed monarch as a “honourable king and a man of the world.”

The former Governor also denied claims by the Kano State Government that he issued two letters of warning to Sanusi while he was in office.

“I have never given the Emir any warning letter or anything like that.”

He also denied claim that his supporters under the Kwankwasiyya movement, were responsible for stirring up tensions between Sanusi and Governor Ganduje.

According to Kwankwaso, his supporters were only after ‘the truth’, and were angry with Ganduje because of the outcome of the 2019 Kano gubernatorial election, which according to him was rigged against his party and in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
