He called on those he described as seasonal politicians not to politicize the current situation the world is facing but rather sincerely contribute their bits to help solve the COVID-19 challenge.

In a swift reaction, the Kogi State Peoples Democratic Party and its Governorship Candidate in the November 16 Election Engineer Musa Wada vowed to appeal the judgement of the Federal High Court.

The party in a statement signed by Achadu Dickson, Director Research and Documentation, said the judgement is only aimed at distracting the party and its candidate because of the APC fear of losing in the Tribunal.

According to the party, the APC is afraid of losing in the Tribunal as such it is looking for all means possible to obtain a judgement that would give them a soft landing.

The PDP assured that it is perturbed by the Federal high court ruling, urged its members to disregard attempt to create disaffection amongst the ranks of the PDP.

By the ruling, the PDP did not participate or have a qualified candidate at the 2019 governorship election in Kogi state.

The suit filed by Femi Peter, a lawyer and citizen of Kogi state, sought amongst other prayers an order disqualifying Musa Atayi Wada, the PDP candidate on November 16, 2019, Kogi gubernatorial election, from contesting the election having presented false information/ false document to INEC in support of his candidacy.

It was alleged that Musa Wada forged the Certificate of Primary Education which he presented to INEC together with his Form CF001. It was also alleged that he presented false information on oath when he stated in his Form CF001 submitted to INEC that he had never presented a forged certificate to INEC.

In proof of his claims, the Plaintiff supplied letters written by both Kwara and Kogi State Ministries of Education confirming that Wada’s Certificate of Primary Education was not authentic.

Also supplied were sample certificates issued in the same 1973 which showed clearly that Musa Wada’s certificate bore no semblance in content and character, including serial number, as those genuinely issued by the Ministry of Education, Kwara State in 1973.

Justice D.U Okorowo, after analysing the avalanche of evidence provided by the plaintiff, holding that the plaintiff has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the Certificate of Primary Education of Musa Itayi Wada was a forged/false document and that he lied in his form CF001 when he answered “NO” to the question whether he had ever presented a forged certificate to INEC.

Consequently, the Court pursuant to Section 31(5) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) amongst other reliefs granted, disqualified Musa Atayi Wada from contesting in the 16th November 2019 Kogi State Gubernatorial Election.

37 Italian Doctors Have Died Of Coronavirus

0

Coronavirus crisis has killed 37 doctors in Italy, while more than 6,000 medical workers have been infected, it emerged today.

Three more doctors died of coronavirus yesterday, in Bergamo, Foggia and Naples, the Italian Federation of Medical Professionals said, bringing the total to 37.

The head of an Italian research institute said today that 6,205 health workers had caught the disease – 8.3 percent of Italy’s 74,376 total infections.

‘What we face every day is a real war bulletin. Doctors and their families mourn their dead,’ said Filippo Anelli, president of the doctors’ federation.

The doctors’ federation has warned that the true death toll may be higher because ‘many doctors die suddenly, even if the cause of death is not directly attributable to the virus because the swab is not carried out.’

On top of that, at least one nurse is believed to have killed herself after being infected with coronavirus and fearing she had spread the disease to others.

Daniela Trezzi, 34, had been working on the front line of the coronavirus crisis at a hospital in Lombardy, the worst-affected region of Italy.

The National Federation of Nurses of Italy confirmed her death and expressed its ‘pain and dismay’ in a statement earlier this week.

The nursing group also revealed that ‘a similar episode had happened a week ago in Venice, with the same underlying reasons’.

‘Each of us has chosen this profession for good and, unfortunately, also for bad: we are nurses,’ the federation said.

‘The condition and stress to which our professionals are subjected are under the eyes of all.’

Many Italian hospitals have been overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis and are facing shortages of ventilators and other medical supplies.

Thousands of medics falling sick has taken them away from the front line when they are desperately needed.

Nino Cartabellotta, the head of the Gimbe foundation which is gathering data on the number of infected medics, urged that this ‘phenomenon’ must be ‘curbed to safeguard those who take care of us’.

As well as hospital doctors and general practitioners, the dead include dentists, psychiatrists and an ophthalmologist.

COVID-19: WHO Sees ‘Encouraging Signs’ In Coronavirus Spread in Europe

0

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) European office said Thursday it saw “encouraging signs” as Italy reported a lower rate of infections of the new coronavirus, cautioning it was too early to say whether the worst had passed.

“While the situation remains very serious, we are starting to see some encouraging signs.

Italy, which has the highest number of cases in the region, has just seen a slightly lower rate of increase, though it is still too early to say that the pandemic is peaking in that country,”

Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, told a press conference.

Coronavirus: Concerns Grow As Tinubu Fails To Self-isolate After UK Trip

0

There are concerns in Lagos on Wednesday over the health status of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who was seen in a public gathering on Tuesday.

Many had criticised the former Lagos State governor for failing to self-isolate after returning from a trip to the United Kingdom (UK).

Tinubu, who returned to the country last weekend, attended a closed-door meeting with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, party leaders and state Assembly lawmakers at the State House, Marina, on Tuesday where he drummed support for the call for the lockdown of Lagos and the country at large over the pandemic.

Aside from taking pictures with party leaders present, Tinubu’s picture greeting Governor Sanwo-Olu with elbow bump also went viral.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Tinubu poured encomiums on Sanwo-Olu on the measures rolled out to curtail the spread of the disease, noting that he had shown leadership in the implementation of the response strategy to manage the confirmed cases and tracing of suspected cases.

He said, “I congratulate the governor for the fact that he asked the workers to stay at home to discontinue the chain of transmission. We must respect this order and obey the government. We endorse the position of the governor. Let people stay at home in this period and pray in their houses.

“We need to observe social distancing. It is a new culture that we have to abide with. I will support total lockdown if the government decides to do that. I am in support of it. There should be a total lockdown if the government observes that we are not complying.

“I could listen attentively to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, yesterday (Tuesday); and Great Britain is under lockdown now. If we have to do it, the government will do it.

“I can’t pre-empt what the governor would be doing next but whatever decision he takes, he has our support. We have reviewed the previous measures with him and he has also reviewed with his team. We have confidence in the team; whatever they say, we will comply.”

Those who spoke on the issue said Tinubu should have taken a cue from Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to the President, who failed to self-isolate after a trip to Germany and has now tested positive to the virus.

Speaking with Daily Independent on Wednesday, Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, said Tinubu’s action reeks of impunity as it may endanger the lives of others amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is the impunity that runs our country. It is the impunity that will make someone (Tinubu) come back from London and burst into town and begin to gallivant all over the place, giving everybody handshakes.

It is the kind of impunity that will make Abba Kyari go to Germany, come back to Nigeria and began to mingle with everybody, going to weddings, attending meetings and so on. So, it is above the norms that we have seen in our leadership all the time, that the laws are meant for others, but not meant for us.

“It is the same impunity that will make some church leaders, even prominent ones among us to go and do church service when the government said no more than 50 people should gather. It is unfortunate”, he said.

In its response, the Lagos State chapter of APC accused Afenifere of playing politics with the issue rather than joining hands with other well-meaning Nigerians on how to combat the pandemic.

Spokesman of the party, Seye Oladejo, said Tinubu as a responsible statesman will never breach any guidelines, especially as regards public safety.

“It is better to get the facts on issues rather than jump into unnecessary conclusions and playing politics. It is highly unfortunate on the part of anyone to want to play politics over the issue of COVID-19. It is always better to get the truth of any situation before jumping into conclusion.

“For a very long time after Asiwaju Tinubu came back, a good number of people didn’t even know he was back. What transpired between that time that he returned to the country which people did not know about it and the time he was seen in public?

“Asiwaju is the national leader of APC and definitely, he will always observe all protocols to the best of my knowledge. He even went further to show concern for the general public health on the issue and he has aligned himself with the decisions taken so far by the Lagos State government on the issue.

“So, I don’t think this is the time for politics like Afenifere is doing. The major thing now is for all of us to overcome the COVID-19 scourge and relegate politics to the background”, he said.

Efforts made to reach Tunde Rahman, Tinubu’s media aide, proved abortive as calls to his mobile phones were not answered as at the time of going to press.

BREAKING: Court Grants Orji Kalu’s Co-Defendant Post-Conviction Bail

0

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has granted post-conviction bail to a former Abia State Commissioner for Finance Jones Udeogu, who was convicted of N7.65billion fraud alongside former Governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.

Last December 5, Justice Mohammad Idris sentenced Udeogu to 56 years imprisonment while Kalu bagged 133 years imprisonment.

But on Thursday, Justice Mohammed Liman granted bail to Udeogu in the sum of N50m on the grounds of hill health and chronic tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis, the judge reasoned, is a dangerous disease which can easily affect the other inmates of the correctional facility.

Justice Liman said: “I’m of the opinion that this application has disclosed a reasonable cause of action that the defendant’s health has greatly deteriorated which can not be salvaged by the doctor in the correctional services centre.

Accordingly this application is meritorious and succeeds.

“Bail is hereby granted to the applicant in the following terms: Applicant is granted N50m bail with two sureties in like sum

“One of the Sureties must be a landed property owner within the jurisdiction.

The judge also ordered that the bailiff of the court must verify the authenticity of the title documents.
