COVID-19 Pandemic Could Lead To Global Condom Shortage — World’s Biggest Producer

The coronavirus pandemic may lead to a global shortage of Condom, the world’s largest producer of condoms, Karex Bhd, has said.

The Malaysia based company said it has not produced a single condom from its three Malaysian factories for more than a week.

This is due to a lockdown imposed by the government to halt the spread of the Covid-19 virus, Bloomberg has reported.

Karex Bhd makes one in every five condoms globally. It produces for brands like Durex as well as its own line of specialty condoms such as Durian-flavored ones.

The other major condom-producing countries are China, where the coronavirus originated and led to widespread factory shutdowns, and India and Thailand, which are seeing infections spiking now.

Sadly, Malaysia is one of the hardest-hit countries in southeast Asia. As of Monday morning, more than 2,400 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, with 35 deaths.

The lockdown in the country is due to remain in place at least until April 14.

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Covid-19 Regulations 2020 to declare Covid-19 as a  “dangerous infectious disease”.

In a statement by his media office, Buhari was said to have signed the regulations “in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Quarantine Act (CAP Q2 LFN 2004), and all other powers enabling him in that behalf”.

Femi Adesina, his spokesman, said the regulations, effective March 30, 2020, “also gave legal backing to the various measures outlined in the President’s National Broadcast on March 29, 2020, such as Restriction/Cessation of Movement in Lagos, FCT and Ogun State and others toward containing the spread of the pandemic in the country”.

There had been criticisms of Buhari’s decision to restrict movement in those areas because, according to some lawyers, there was no legal backing.

Adesina also said to ensure that Nigerians can still perform on-line transactions and use ATMs during these restrictions, “exemption is granted financial system and money markets to allow very skeletal operations in order to keep the system in light operations during the pendency of these regulations”.

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), had earlier said Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, human rights lawyer who raised issues over the lockdown, goofed.

He said the quarantine act empowered the president to restrict movement when a “dangerous disease” breaks out.

The Abia state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has maintained that the earlier order for the total lockdown of the state to checkmate the spread of coronavirus stands.
 
A release made available to ABN TV, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Chris Ezem after the meeting of Abia State Inter-Ministerial Committee on Coronavirus said people or institutions rendering essential services, such as security agencies – Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense, TIMAAS, Fire Services, Hospitals, pharmaceuticals, media, eateries, shops within the neighborhood, filling stations are exempted from the stay-at-home order.
 
The committee had met to review some measures and strategies the state has put in place to avert the spread of the deadly COVID-19.
 
“Accordingly, Abia State Governor Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has approved the lockdown of the state from Wednesday April 1, 2020, for 1 week in the first instance.
 
“However, people or institutions rendering essential services, such as security agencies – Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense, TIMAAS, Fire Services, Hospitals, pharmaceuticals, media, eateries, shops within the neighborhood, filling stations are exempted.
 
“The Committee strongly advised citizens to stay at home, but if you must come out, you must wear face mask” the release said.
The committee reiterated that even though the State borders remain closed till further notice, vehicles carrying foods, medical and pharmaceutical items, Petroleum products and other essential items are exempted.
 
The committee also emphasised that social functions such as weddings, burial ceremonies are forthwith banned.
 
“In order to avoid overcrowding and body contact, social gatherings of all kinds; weddings, burial ceremonies, the meeting of all colourations and religious activities are suspended forthwith.
 
“Attention of government has been drawn on some people who deliberated flouted the earlier directive of government on public gatherings and crowd control. I wish to reiterate that Transition Committee Chairman and Traditional Rulers in their domains must enforce government directives without fail.
 
“On the part of the citizenry, they should always maintain the high level of hygiene by constantly washing their hands with running water and soap, wear face masks, apply alcoholic based sanitizers as well as practice social distancing of 1.5meters at all time.
 
“Other directives issued earlier on transportation, hospitality industry, etc are still in force.
 
“Finally, Abia State Government earnestly feel the pains and sacrifices every citizen must make, so that together we will win the battle against coronavirus” the release added.

Coronavirus: FRSC Shuts Down Driver’s License Capture Centres Nationwide

Following the lockdown directive by President Muhammadu Buhari on the COVID-19 pandemic on Sunday, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi has ordered the shutdown of driver’s license database in Abuja with immediate effect, in line with the President’s directives to lockdown.

According to the FRSC, drivers licence centres (DLCs) will not be able to process licenses for applicants nationwide. However, applicants can go via the By-pass mode to begin processing for the license to be delivered after the lockdown period.

In a press release by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, he revealed that the shutdown is aimed at sustaining existing measures already in place by the Federal Government to curtail further spread of the menace.

He added that the corps marshal had in the wake of the pandemic directed all DLCs to maintain maximum hygiene through the provision of adequate water, soap and alcohol-based sanitizers at the centres.

Kazeem said, “You would recall that the corps marshal had earlier advised applicants to avoid physical capture at this critical moment when the world is battling a common enemy (COVID-19), and explore the By-Pass option which is the online processing of the National Drivers License without the physical presence of the applicant at the DLCs.  However, the driver’s license will only be collected upon resumption after the lockdown.

“It is, therefore, to be noted that the By-Pass option is applicable only to applicants who intend to renew their licenses not fresh applicants. This is hereby reiterated as part of the Corps’ concerted efforts to curb the spread of the global health challenge.”

Accordingly, Kazeem added that the closure of the DLCs will not affect the Operational formations of the Corps as Operatives have been deployed to render required essential services in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies at all levels to enforce both the Presidential and State Government’s directives on the restriction of movement and sit at home among others.

“To this end, the Corps Marshal has notified the chairman and secretary of the Joint Tax Board about the effect of the temporary shutdown of the DLCs nationwide,” Kazeem added.

COVID-19: Abia Speaker, Orji Distributes Hand Sanitizers to Constituents

As part of his contributions to the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic, Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, earlier today distributed cartons of alcohol-based hand sanitizers to the people of his Umuahia Central State Constituency.

Before the distribution, a medical doctor and member of the distribution team, Dr. Anya Kalu, sensitized traders at the popular Orie Ugba Market in Umuahia on the need to maintain a hygienic lifestyle and adhere to social distancing as directed by the World Health Organization and the Government of Abia State.

“You must ensure you wash your hands regularly with soap and use these hand sanitizers which will kill any form of germs in your hands”.

Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Nze Kenneth Ezeigbo, who led the team from Office of the Speaker told the traders that the Speaker was solidly behind the people of Umuahia Central State Constituency in this fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and urged them not to panic but abide by all the guidelines issued by Abia State Government and other relevant agencies on the prevention and control of the virus.

The team distributed cartons of hand sanitizers at Orie Ugba Market, Amauzukwu Relief Market, Isi Gate City Centre, Orogwu Market in Afaraukwu and Old Timber Market in World Bank all in Umuahia Central State Constituency.

Nigeria Records 2nd Death From Coronavirus

The Nigerian Government has confirmed the second death from coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, announced this on Monday during the Presidential Task Force Briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He said, “Till date, three persons have been discharged after successful treatment. But sadly, another fatality was recorded over the weekend in the person of a patient who had severe underlying illnesses.

“We have intensified contact tracing and our strategy remains to promptly detect cases, isolate them, and follow up with their contacts and also isolate and treat, in order to reduce the spread of the infection.”

“As of today, the 30th of March, 2020, we have recorded 111 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria of which 68 are in Lagos, 21 in the FCT, seven in Oyo, three in Ogun, two in Bauchi, two in Edo, two in Osun, two in Enugu, and one each in Benue, Ekiti, Kaduna and Rivers States,” Ehanire added.

He stressed that Nigeria has 111 confirmed cases of COVID-19, saying a majority of them were persons who came in from overseas.

According to the health minister, the highest number of confirmed cases are in Lagos and Abuja because they serve as the major gateways to the country.

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Oyo State governor, Oluwaseyi Makinde has confirmed via his verified twitter handle that he has been tested positive to coronavirus.

”I just received my COVID-19 confirmation test result. It is POSITIVE. I am asymptomatic and will continue to self-isolate.

BREAKING: Gov. Uzodinma Sacks Imo Accountant General

Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma has approved the immediate sack of Mr. Donald Igbo as the accountant general of the state.

The governor also appointed Mr. Obieze Valentine Chukwukama as Igbo’s replacement as the new Accountant-General of the state.

Chukwukama’s appointment was contained in a letter from the Office of the Principal Secretary to the Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Irene Chima.

The letter dated March 30, 2020, reads: “I am directed to inform you that His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State has approved the appointment of Obieze Valentine Chukwukama as the new Accountant-General of Imo State. The appointment is with immediate effect.

“You are, therefore, requested to stop any further transaction with the former Accountant-General, Mr. Donald Igbo and to effect all the necessary changes in respect to the Accounts of Imo State Government with you.

“Please take steps to implement His Excellency’s directive.”

Until his recent pick, Chukwukama was an Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
