Umuahia Community Decries Inability To Cope Without Light During Lockdown, Seeks Revocation Of EEEDC’s License

0

Frustrated by the failure of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to give them light two years after the damage of their transformer, the residents of Bende road in Umuahia Abia state are calling on the Federal government to immediately revoke the operational license of the power distribution company.

Speaking with ABN TV on Thursday, a resident of the area, Mr. Nnaemeka Kanu described the activities of EEDC to man’s inhumanity to man, wondering why the company has failed to procure another functional transformer to restore electricity in the area after the people have contributed the sum of N1,000 each household to fix the transformer.

According to Kanu, the area houses a large number of civil servants in the state whom he said to pay their taxes, saying denying them basic amenities such as power supply in unfair.

He called on the federal government to withdraw the licenses of electricity distribution companies such as the EEDC which he said has refused to serve the people.

He decried the suffering of the masses even with the sit-at-home order issued by the various states to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

Kanu faulted the Federal government over what he called poor monitoring and evaluation, maintaining that the federal ministry of power has not done much in evaluating the performances of the companies.

He expressed dissatisfaction over the humongous amount of citizens spend in generating their own power supply.

The incident, ABN TV gathered, took place in Akaeze community in the Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Tuesday.

It was gathered that though the deceased and the suspect were lovers, they were always at loggerheads and often threatened each other’s life.

It was learnt that the deceased’s lifeless body was found on the floor in front of his doorpost by a villager, after the suspect allegedly killed him, by pulling his genitals, which led to his instant death.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday.

The Police Public  Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Loveth Odah, said, “On 31/03/2020, at about 11 am, one Rose-John ‘f’ in company with one Sunday Ngwoke ‘m’ reported at Ivo Police Division that while she was frying garri in her kitchen, she saw one Chinenye Okoro run across her compound and jumped the fence, which got her attention.

Coronavirus: Chinese City BAN Eating Of Dogs, Snakes, Frogs, Cats, Turtle

0

The city of Shenzhen in China has been forced to ban its residents from eating dog, snake, frog, turtle and cat meat in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The legislation was yesterday passed by lawmakers in Shenzhen, a city of around 13 million people, and will take effect on May 1, according to a government notice.

The news comes after China banned all trade and consumption of wild animals, a practice, which scientists believe is responsible for the deadly virus infecting and killing people globally.

The officials described the new regulation as the ‘universal civilisation requirement for a modern society’ and said the aim is to ‘further satisfy the daily needs of the people’.

According to the document, nine types of livestock are suitable for people to eat. They are pigs, cows, sheep, donkeys, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese and pigeons.

Residents are also allowed to dine on aquatic animals permitted by law.

Before the law was passed,  one spokesperson said the authority wanted to make it easier for people to know what can be eaten.

There are so many animal species in nature. In our country alone, there are more than 2,000 kinds of protected wild animal species.

‘If the local authority is to produce a list of the wild animals that cannot be eaten, it will be too lengthy and cannot answer the question exactly what animals can be eaten,’ the official said.

In China, coronavirus has claimed 3,312 lives and infected more than 81,500 people since the outbreak started in Wuhan.

Globally, the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 800,000 as it has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

VIDEO: COVID-19 New Treatment Will Be Tested First In Africa, Says French Doctors

0

Jean Paul Mira and Camille Locht, two French doctors, have been slammed on social media after stating that a treatment drug for coronavirus should be first tested in Africa.

In the video, the two medical experts cited the use of prostitutes in Africa to carry out a test vaccine for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) as for instance.

Mira, head of the resuscitation department at Cochin Hospital, also pointed out that the continent should be considered because of its perceived toughness to disease outbreaks.

The video was translated by Rim-Sarah Alouane, who quoted them to have said;

Dr. Mira: “If I can be provocative, shouldn’t we do this study in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatment, no resuscitation, a bit like it has been done in some studies in AIDS, where among prostitutes, we try things, because they are exposed, and they don’t protect themselves, what do you think?”

Dr. Locht: “So you are right[…]we’re thinking in parallel to a study in Africa precisely to make this same type of approach w/ BCG [vaccine]placebo, I think there is a call for tenders that were released or that will be released & I think we will indeed srsly think about that too”

Responding to the video, the Chief Executive of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera wrote;

We will be looking out for you when you arrive. Please consult Pfizer for their experience with their TROVAN trial in Kano;1996 resolved 14 years later in 2010. If you can’t find them, google it. Whichever way, hide really well cos, we are on the lookout if NIGERIA is on your radar.

They will be well advised to research the Pfizer case and my credentials in these types of matters. It will be a colossal error of judgment to do a trial here that doesn’t comply with the full ethical & safety protocols including “informed” consent. There’s a precedent already.

SAD! Heavy Rainstorm Fells Billboard, Kills Fast Food Joint Owner In Aba

0

A-yet-to-be identified fast food joint operator has been reportedly killed in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State.

A giant advertising billboard at the busy Osisioma junction fell and crushed him to death.

The investigation has it that the billboard fell during a whirlwind that accompanied a torrential rainfall that lasted for about 3hrs on Wednesday as residents began to observe the total shutdown order of Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

Our reporter gathered that another man in his late twenties, said to be a close relation to the deceased who was trapped under the heavy iron is still battling for survival in an undisclosed hospital at the time of this report.

The deceased was said to have been buried in Aba by the Hausa community in accordance with Islamic rites.

Eyewitnesses told our reporter that the survivor sustained a life-threatening bodily injury through the impact of the pipe of the billboard that rested upon him.

According to the eyewitnesses, the two persons that were trapped under the heavy pile were brought out through the efforts of a construction company’s workers working on the Osisioma inter-change bridge who used one of their heavy-duty equipment to lift the pipe that rested on the duo.

They said that while one was brought out dead as he faced the ground which could not allow him breath, the other person escaped death by the whiskers as the rescue team was able to lift the heavy pipe after which he was rushed to the hospital.

One of the sources who gave his name as Onyema said that about ten other customers to the deceased and his neighbours including a commercial tricycle owner, also narrowly escaped death.

Mr. Emmanuel Nwangbo from Ebonyi State, whose commercial tricycle was damaged in the incident while narrating what happened, said that he parked at the junction because of the heavy rain and the whirlwind that accompanied it.

Nwangbo who couldn’t hold his tears while thanking God for saving his life said that the only regret is his means of income that was damaged beyond repairs.

“I have only N400, 000 left to complete the higher purchase of this Keke. Now that this thing has happened, I don’t what to say again. I don’t know what the person that gave me this Keke is going to do”.
