Fifty-one new cases of COVID-19 have been reported; 32 in Lagos, 6 in Kano, 5 in Kwara, 2 in FCT, 2 in Oyo, 2 in Katsina, 1 in Ogun, 1 in Ekiti.

As at 10:10 pm 17th April there are 493 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria.

IG, Mohammed Adamu Redeploys Rivers Police Commissioner

The inspector-general of police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the immediate redeployment of Dandaura Mustapha, the commissioner of police in Rivers state.

Frank Mba, force public relations officer, announced Mustapha’s redeployment in a statement on Friday.

He said Joseph Mukari has been appointed as the new police commissioner in the state while Mustapha is now the commissioner of police, provost at the force headquarters, Abuja.

In the statement, Mba said: “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has ordered the posting and redeployment of the following Senior Police Officers to Command/Formation/Department indicated against their names:

  • CP Dandaura Mustapha – CP Provost FHQ, Abuja
  • CP Joseph Gobum Mukan, psc(+) – CP Rivers Command
  • CP Musa Adze, fdc – CP Anti-Fraud Unit

“The IGP charges the affected Commissioners of Police to diligently and professionally discharge their duties in their new areas of responsibilities.

“The posting and the redeployment of the affected Senior Police Officers are with immediate effect.”

The development comes one week after Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, locked horns with the federal government over the arrest of some pilots.

Wike on Friday ordered the arrest and quarantine of 22 Exxon Mobil staff who entered the state from Akwa Ibom for allegedly violating the executive order on lockdown.

Wike had previously ordered the arrest of two pilots of Caverton Helicopters for flying some oil workers into the state during the lockdown.

The company had argued that the federal government exempted it from the flight ban but the governor dismissed the argument and the pilots were arraigned in court and remanded in prison.

Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, later faulted the action of the governor, accusing the security operatives who arrested the pilots on the governor’s order of “displaying ignorance”.

The pilots were later granted bail. It is unclear if the development led to the replacement of Mustapha who took over the Rivers police command in July.

Earlier on Friday, Wike had tackled Sirika, accusing the federal government of attempting to make the people of the state vulnerable to coronavirus.

The Abia state government has declared one Mr. Vincent Prosper wanted for allegedly sneaking into the state with a suspected COVID-19 case.

In a release signed by the Commissioner for Information john Okiyi Kalu made available to ABN TV on Friday, Mr. Prosper had sneaked into Abia State from a neighboring state.

“He was last seen around 153, Azikiwe Road, Aba. Anyone with useful information on his whereabouts should call 0700 2242 362 or contact the State Commissioner for Health.

“Those who have had contact with him are advised to call 0700 2242 362 immediately” he said.

The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has commenced the distribution of food palliatives to indigenes in the old Eastern region of the country as part of efforts to ameliorate their sufferings over the COVID-19 lockdown.

ABN TV gathered that media houses in Abia State have also benefitted from the food palliatives.

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, Nnamdi Kanu who was represented by his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu said Mazi Kanu is touched by the difficulties the people are passing through this time as a result of the restriction of movements across the Eastern States and beyond.

He added that there is no discrimination in the distribution of items made available for his brother to cushion the effect of the stay-at-home order across the Eastern zone, saying “enemies will benefit as well“.

According to Prince Kanu, physically challenged people, the aged and vulnerable were given priority in the distribution of the palliatives across the benefitting states.

On why he selected media houses in the list of beneficiaries, Prince Kanu said the palliatives will serve as morale booster for journalists whom he said have staked their lives in updating members of the public on progress made by the state government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Abia state governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu has extended the restriction of movements order in the state to curb the spread of COVID-19 from Monday, April 20, 2020.

This is the second time the state government is extending the lockdown.

In a release signed by the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu on Friday and made available to ABN TV, this extension is following the advice of medical experts and a painstaking review of the coronavirus situation with the state COVID-19 Inter-Ministerial Committee and in the state’s continued determination to protect Abians from the pandemic while also ensuring that the effect of preventive measures on the people is alleviated.

“The window of two days, Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, 2020, is for our people to restock while the total lockdown resumes on Monday, April 20, 2020.

“Abians are expected to use the two-day restocking window to acquire face masks as it is now compulsory to wear face masks before leaving home.

“The closure of our borders is still in place. Further directives have been given to those manning the borders to ensure tighter measures are put in place” the statement read.

According to the Commissioner, “The Governor thanks all Abians and those residents in the State for their support and cooperation so far and appeals to them for their continued understanding on this latest arrangement as every effort is deployed by government to ensure the prevention, management, and control of the pandemic and protect our people from its scourge”.

BREAKING: Fire Guts INEC Headquarters, Documents Destroyed

The Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja was on Friday razed by fire.

The affected section, the Election and Party Monitoring Department (EPM), was completely burnt by the inferno that started at about 11 am.

However, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Voters’ Education and Information, Festus Okoye, said that no critical document was lost in the fire except computers and photocopying machines.

He disclosed that some documents relating to political parties were burnt but the important ones were stored in fireproof cabinets.

According to him: “the fire started around 11 am, it was at the Media Centre outside the INEC Headquarters, the Headquarters is intact, there is no cause for alarm. The main documents relating to our monitoring of political parties are still intact, they have been moved out before the fire. What you have here are just correspondences. But we have lost public properties and our working equipment We are still trying to find out what happened”.

Controller Braimoh Mommoh, in charge of Federal Fire Service, Abuja Command, said he was called that there was fire at the INEC Headquarters.

He said that the level of damage was minimal due to the efforts of the firemen “otherwise the whole house would have been razed down”.

Mommoh said investigations are on to unravel the cause of the fire, adding that critical analysis will be done.

Ghanaian Police Launch Manhunt For Nigerian Man Who Escaped After Testing Positive For COVID-19

Police in Ghana on Friday, April 17, launched a manhunt for a Nigerian who fled the country after he was found to have tested positive for coronavirus.

The 46-year-old Nigerian, Simon Okafor Chukwudi, was said to have entered the country from Germany before Ghana declared a lockdown and was subsequently tested with the result showing he was positive for coronavirus.

According to a report by Daily Graphic, an online news medium in Ghana, the man was said to have disappeared from his residence in Wa area of the Upper West Region of the country since April 14 after he was asked to self-isolate and his sample taken for testing.

It was gathered that the Nigerian disappeared immediately his status was revealed to him by the health directorate in the Upper West region as the health officials who came to take him to the isolation centre could not find him.

So, policemen in the Upper West Region have launched a manhunt for him and have called on residents to volunteer information to assist in apprehending him.

The Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Osei Kufuor Afreh, disclosed that the Nigerian citizen is part of the imported COVID-19 cases in the region.

He however, indicated that health officials have tried to transport the patient to the isolation centre since Tuesday but could not trace him.

The Upper West Region in Ghana have recorded six COVID-19 cases so far.

Five of those cases were people who travelled into the country about three weeks ago from South Africa, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany before the country’s president announced the closure of the borders, while the sixth person travelled into the region from Western Region.

Britain will stay in lockdown for at least three more weeks until it passes five key tests, Dominic Raab announced yesterday.

The Foreign Secretary’s checks include ensuring the NHS is not overwhelmed by coronavirus victims and seeing a steady reduction in deaths.

Mr Raab said yesterday that the current restrictions were helping to halt the spread of the virus.

But he outlined five key tests the country had to meet before they could begin to be lifted. They are:

  1. The NHS must still be able to cope – with the confidence that critical care and special treatment can continue across the UK
  2. A sustained and consistent fall in the daily death rates so experts are confident that the peak has passed
  3. The rate of infection falling to “manageable levels”
  4. Making sure that Britain has enough testing capacity and PPE to relax measures
  5. Ensuring that the changes will not risk a second peak of infections that overwhelm the NHS

Mr Raab said rushing to relax the measures would jeopardise all the progress made so far.

He added that the UK was still on course to take three months to come out of the current peak — taking the lockdown to June.

Lockdown Time May Miraculously Assist Families In Search Of Fruit Of Womb — Nigerian Man

A husband and father, Mr. Patrick Ufere has said the period of restriction of movements across the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) may miraculously be the answered prayer many families who are in search of fruit of the womb are looking for.

He also said it has provided millions of families the opportunity to develop a strong bond.

In a chat with ABN TV on Thursday, Mr. Ufere a staff of Abia State Polytechnic emphasised that due to tight work and academic schedules, parents, children and other family members do not enjoy quality time with each other at home.

According to him, apart from assisting his wife with domestic chores, the lockdown period has drawn him more closer to his children, enabling him to understand their character and capabilities, their strengths and weaknesses.

Mr. Ufere said what appeared like a pandemic has now turned out to be a blessing in disguise for families to achieve peace and unity.

He appealed to Nigerians to adhere to the instruction of government on the restriction of movements especially since the cure for COVID-19 is not yet known.
