E-Money Leaves Police Custody After Six Hours Of Interrogation

The Chairman, Five Star Group, Emeka Okonkwo aka E-Money, has left police custody after six hours of interrogation, ABN TV has learnt.

E-Money, it was learnt, arrived at the Police Headquarters Annex, Kam Salem, Obalende, Ikoyi, around 1pm in a wine-coloured suit.

He was subsequently grilled for about six hours in police custody by the Inspector-General of Police, Monitoring Department.

A top source said, “E-Money visited the Force HQ annex today and met with police detectives and was grilled for about six hours.

“He came along with two others and responded to many questions. Somebody took his bail and he was allowed to leave and return on Wednesday for more questioning.”

The IG, Mohammed Adamu, had placed E-Money under investigation over his flamboyant lifestyle and alleged flagrant abuse of police escorts.

Okonkwo, who is the brother to musician, Kingsley Okonkwo aka K-Cee, was said to have drawn the ire of the police boss for allegedly using policemen like domestic servants.

An order, it was learnt, was immediately handed to the Lagos State Police Command to withdraw the six policemen attached to E-Money.

A top police officer said, “We received a signal from the Force headquarters on Monday that the police detail of music executive, E-Money, be immediately withdrawn and an investigation into the man be launched.

“The IG was surprised that policemen were attached to him in the first place and were being used like domestic servants, carrying umbrellas, opening doors and doing menial jobs for him.

“The policemen were discovered to be attached to B Operations at the command headquarters and not MOPOL which is the usual practice.

“So, we have withdrawn his policemen and we are inviting him for questioning. The policemen will also be interrogated.”

The member representing Bende Federal Constituency and the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has lamented the spate of insecurity in and around the National Assembly Complex as burglars broke into his office during the lockdown.

Kalu, while lamenting the incident at his office on Tuesday, said members of the National Assembly were no longer safe to carry out their legislative duties.

The lawmaker, who is representing Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, said he was shocked when he found out on Tuesday morning that his office had been burgled.

Kalu said he had asked his aides to report the incident to the Sergeant-At-Arms and other security bodies at the National Assembly, while he would interface with the House Committees on Police Affairs and Internal Security.

He said, “It is actually surprising to see that somebody broke into my office. We are still trying to assess (the situation) to know what the intention of breaking into my office was. Was it to take an important document out or to check if we are leaving money or any valuables in the office, or to plant any security or spying device? Honestly, I don’t know but I have asked my aides to register it with the Sergeant-At-Arms.

“I am sure the police here will do their investigation and find out what actually happened. It is scary to come into your office and find this. This is one of the consequences of COVID-19 when we are not sitting every day. The time we were sitting every day, we never experienced this. So, hoodlums are beginning to see this also as an opportunity to break into people’s offices.

“We can’t pin it down, whether it was just breaking in for stealing or breaking in to spy on what the National Assembly is doing through my office. But whatever it is, I am sure the security agencies will get to the root of it. The National Assembly is no longer safe.

“For my office to be broken into, as the spokesperson for the House, I need to speak out so that people will know. The committee in charge of security needs to step up their game.

“I am going to immediately get in touch with those who are in charge of that committee to see what they are doing about situations of this nature. It is actually shocking. It means that we are not safe to do our job.

“My aide arrived this morning after dropping me at the chamber and I walked in here now to see this. The door to my personal office cannot close. It is open. It is unsafe and we need to secure it today to avoid anything happening after this time.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 146 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 4,787.

The centre disclosed this on Tuesday night via its verified Twitter handle.

It tweeted: “146 new cases of #COVID19; 57-Lagos 27-Kano 10-Kwara 9-Edo 8-Bauchi 7-Yobe 4-Kebbi 4-Oyo 3-Katsina 3-Niger 2-Plateau 2-Borno 2-Sokoto 2-Benue 1-Gombe 1-Enugu 1-Ebonyi 1-Ogun 1-FCT 1-Rivers.”

Another Woman With Coronavirus Delivers Baby Boy At LUTH

A team of doctors, anesthetists, and nurses, at LUTH, Idi-Araba, delivered another woman, 37, with Coronavirus (COVID-19), of a baby boy weighing (2.6kg).

Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), of LUTH, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

“The baby was delivered via a cesaerian section on Saturday, May 9.

“The mother and baby are doing well, we celebrate our committed frontline staff for this achievement,” he said.

NAN reports that the medical team had also on April 20, delivered a 40 -year-old woman with COVID-19 of a baby girl, weighing 3.3kg.

WHO Meets African Traditional Medicine Experts Over COVID-19 Cure

The World Health Organisation, WHO says it met with 70 traditional medicine experts in a bid to find a cure for the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO African Region made this known via its Twitter handle on Tuesday.

The health organisation said an agreement was reached with the herbal medicine experts on clinical trials of their remedies.

The PUNCH reports that the meeting is coming days after Madagascar said it found a herbal remedy capable of curing the disease.

@WHOAFRO tweeted, “70 traditional medicine experts from countries across #Africa held a virtual meeting with @WHO on the role of traditional medicine in the #COVID19 response.

“They unanimously agreed that clinical trials must be conducted for all medicines in the Region, without exception.”

Earlier, Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina criticised WHO and other international organisations for allegedly scorning local “remedy” for COVID-19.

“If it wasn’t Madagascar, and if it was a European country that had actually discovered this remedy, would there be so much doubt? I don’t think so,” he told French media in an interview.

Before the meeting, WHO had repeatedly warned that the COVID-Organics infusion, which Rajoelina has touted as a remedy against the deadly coronavirus, has not been clinically tested.

But Madagascar claimed the drink is derived from artemisia – a plant with proven anti-malarial properties – and other indigenous herbs.

Already Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Niger, and Tanzania have taken delivery of consignments of the potion, which was launched last month.

Also, Nigeria’s president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has approved the importation of the remedy.

Emefiele Challenges Nigerian Scientists To Develop Coronavirus Vaccine

Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has challenged Nigerian scientists to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus.

Speaking on Tuesday at the unveiling of the THISDAY Dome Testing, Tracing & Treatment Centre in Abuja, Emefiele said the apex bank will step in with funding once the vaccine is validated by health authorities.

“In order to encourage greater research and development in Nigeria of drugs and vaccines that would help prevent the spread of the virus, the CBN is developing a framework under which grants and long term facilities will be provided to researchers, science institutions and biotechnology firms to develop the Nigerian vaccine.

“Needless to state that if we are to wait for foreign countries to develop their own vaccines, we will be the last in the queue to receive curative remedies for our teeming population.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria today challenges Nigerian scientists at home and in the diaspora to go back to their laboratories and develop a Nigerian vaccine.

“Once validated by the health authorities, the CBN will step in and do the needful for the sake of over 200 million Nigerians now confronted by COVID-19.”

According to the governor, the restoration of economic growth is dependent on how the public health crisis brought on by the coronavirus is addressed.

This is why, he said, the CBN launched an N100bn healthcare intervention fund which pharmaceutical and healthcare practitioners can access at a single-digit interest rate.

Listing other initiatives by the CBN, Emefiele said there is an N50 billion intervention facility for small and medium scale enterprises affected by COVID-19; in addition to an N1 trillion facility for firms operating in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

The CBN has also approved a moratorium and restructuring of loans under its intervention funds.

Senate Condemns Breach Of Interstate Travel Ban, Asks IGP To Investigate Complicity Of Officers

The Senate has condemned in strong terms the barefaced breach of the presidential order on overnight curfew and ban on non-essential interstate travel aimed at containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suspicious of compromise by some security officials, it has also directed the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu and the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, to ensure full enforcement of the presidential orders and investigate the alleged complicity of their men in the breaches.

ABN TV reports that the resolution was a sequel to a motion on “Need to Enforce Presidential Order Banning Non-Essential Interstate Movement”, sponsored by former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, at plenary on Tuesday.

Moving the motion, the lawmaker representing Enugu West in the upper legislative chamber, said the Senate was alarmed at the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country, which he said currently stood at 4,641 cases and 150 deaths, as well as the daily confirmed cases, which he noted, was now hundreds.

He said: “The Senate is aware that the President, in his wisdom and relying on advisories by relevant authorities and powers conferred on him by Section 3 of the Quarantine Act, CAP Q2 Laws of the Federation 2004 issued the Proclamation Order on the General Management of COVID-19, banning non-essential inter-state passenger travels until further notice in order to contain the deadly novel Coronavirus.

“The Senate is also aware of the presidential order declaring dusk to dawn curfew all over the country.

“The Senate is, therefore, seriously worried by the numerous reports and trending videos on the flagrant breach of the curfew and interstate travel”.

He recalled that both the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had raised the alarm over what it described as “Increased level of interstate movement, worsened by the dubious concealment of people in food-carrying vehicles”, while the Nigeria Governors’ Forum had equally raised serious concerns over how Nigerians crisscross the country in their numbers despite the subsisting order to the contrary.

“The Senate is conscious of the very grave implications of the brazen breach of the presidential order restricting interstate movements and of the fact that the nation’s security agencies, particularly the police, have the responsibility to enforce law and order, including the presidential ban on interstate movement.

“The Senate, is, however, very worried about reports of alleged complicity in the said breaches by those who are supposed to enforce compliance with the directives of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces”.

Consequently, the Senate unanimously enjoins Nigerians to strictly comply with the orders for their own safety and to quicken the nation’s victory over the COVID-19 pandemic.

It equally directed the Inspector-General of Police, Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and heads of all security agencies charged with enforcing the ban on interstate travel “to investigate the alleged complicity of their officers in the breach of the curfew and ban non-essential interstate travels and bring to book anyone found wanting”.

The upper legislative chamber called on the two security chiefs to ensure that their various commands cooperate with respective State authorities in enforcing the presidential orders and other protocols aimed at rolling back the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his contribution, the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan noted: “There is a need for proper enforcement of the restrictions on interstate travels.

“Apparently, there is so much breach and interference. We need to seat up because this is a very serious challenge to our country”.

He also stressed the need for social distancing.

“Beyond the interstate travels, even the observance of social distancing sometimes suffers inside the states.

“So, it is very important that citizens do this because this is for ourselves and for our family members”, he concluded.

30 Northern Youths Caught Hiding Behind Baskets Of Pepper Inside Truck In Ogun

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), on Monday, intercepted a truck loaded with 30 Northern youths, at Sango Ota area of the state.

ABN TV reports that the IVECO truck with registration number KANO XG 172 KNG was stopped for search by the operatives of the agency where it was discovered that 30 northern youths were hidden behind baskets of pepper.

The truck which was reported to have been covered with a tarpaulin but was turned back by the officials of the road management control manning the Joju junction in the town.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), on Monday, intercepted a truck loaded with 30 Northern youths, at Sango Ota area of the state.

Boko Haram Leader, Shekau Weeps In New Audio, Seeks Protection Against Military Firepower

The leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has cried profusely in new audio, seeking protection of Allah against the firepower of the Nigerian military.

Of late, the Nigerian military has intensified offensive and recorded a series of successes against the Boko Haram terrorists on the fringes of Lake Chad.

In 1:22 seconds new audio, the Boko Haram leader spoke in Kanuri, seeking protection of Allah against the “devilish act” of the Nigerian military, and said they are facing difficulties in this Holy month of Ramadan.

“If it is the devilish act and wickedness [of the Nigerian military], may Allah protect us from their evil. Oh Allah, keep us firm on your religion. We are poor things who know nothing, oh our Lord, Allah.

“We deserted Izala people to practice Your true religion; we abandoned Tijjaniyya people to practice Your true religion; we deserted the Shiites to practice Your true religion; we forsook our parents, uncles and aunties to practice Your true religion.

“It is because of your religion that we placed a knife on Your servants’ necks; but today, they are trying to change us from one thing to another.

“Oh Lord, have mercy upon under [the blessings] Ramadhan; Oh Lord, have mercy on under [the blessings] of Ramadhan (crying profusely).

“Oh, Allah give us victory over our enemies. Oh brothers, for Allah’s sake, obey Allah and help me with prayers. This does not mean I am angry.

“May Allah keep us firm on the Qur’an. Allah knows best. Peace and blessings are upon the Prophet of Allah and all thanks be to Allah,” Mr Shekau sobbed.

In a reaction to the audio clip, Bulama Bukarti, a human rights lawyers and conflict analyst who has studied Boko Haram for over a decade, said: “This is the first time we heard Shekau cry in this way.”

According to Mr Bulama, the audio suggests that something terrible is happening to the Shekau faction of Boko Haram.

“The Shekau we are used to is a bombastic, ruthless gangster that ridicules, mocks and chortles at his victims. This audio is quite unusual.

“It suggests that the group is under immense pressure that threatens its existence. Anything that will make Shekau sob must be a serious existential threat and I think it is the Nigerian Army’s ongoing onslaught.

“The army has been releasing news and photos of their successes and Boko Haram itself has lately been releasing eulogies to dead fighters.

“That is what made Shekau wail in this audio. He thinks it is hard to survive this one,” Mr Bulama said.

He, however, noted that the audio does not suggest that the Boko Haram leader is surrendering and seeking negotiation.

“But make no mistake that he would never back down, he will not surrender. He would rather die fighting. As the clip indicates, he is as committed to his cause as ever.

“And history has taught us that Boko Haram is capable of weathering storms and bouncing back from serious defeats.

“Therefore, I suggest that the Nigerian Army should push on; it is not time to relax. It is time to do even more,” he added.

Madagascar Herbal Drug: Nigeria Has No Shame – Pharmacists Blast Buhari Administration

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) says it received the news that the Buhari administration is about to import a herbal concoction called COVID Organics (CVO) from Madagascar with utter disbelief.

Sam Ohuabunwa, PSN President, in a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, declared that Nigeria displayed that it has no shame.

Noting that the body was not against any drug that is proven to cure COVID-19 or any other disease, but is totally appalled that Nigeria is about to spend its scarce foreign exchange.

“Even if we are not going to pay for this, it is thoroughly disgraceful that a country that should be the leader of Africa, with the largest GDP will allow itself to be dragged this low”, Ohuabunwa noted.

He pointed out that Nigeria has about 174 Universities (43 Federal, 52 State and 79 private), 20 Faculties of Pharmacy and about 69 Federal-Funded Research Institutes (including National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research & Development and the National Institute for Medical Research) while Madagascar has only 6 Universities, 1 Faculty of Pharmacy and 9 Research Centers.

Ohuabunwa insisted Nigeria has some of the best scientists (Pharmaceutical, Medical, Biochemical, Biological etc.) in the world who have done so much work on natural and herbal medicines.

He added that Nigeria has developed a pharmacopoeia of natural and herbal products and has one of the richest flora and fauna – potent sources of phytomedicines.

According to him, since the outbreak of the COVID-19, a number of them have raised their voices that they have herbal and natural products that can be used to treat or manage COVID-19.

Ohuabunwa observed that many herbal companies and producers have announced specifically that they have formulations that can become the ‘invention’ from Madagascar.

“We raised our voices severally that the Federal Government should review these claims and help put them through clinical evaluation as most of these producers cannot afford to conduct clinical trials.

“We recommended that a portion of the nearly N25bilion donated/allocated for COVID-19 should be dedicated to local research and development.

“But our Government has remained essentially silent only waiting to participate in WHO sponsored or mandated trials.

“We have been told that Nigeria is participating in the WHO solidarity trial, but nothing on trying our own inventions and formulations.

“Now we want to import COVID Organics from Madagascar to try? Why are we like this?

“If the world can supply us synthetic and chemically-sophisticated medicines which we apparently lack the technology to produce, why must we wait for the World to supply us herbal formulations which we can easily make and which we have similar products?

“We urge our Government to save Nigerian Pharmaceutical Scientists and other scientists from the shame of having our country import and try herbal remedies which God has given us in abundance and some of which our grandfathers and grandmothers have used for ages.

“Let us try our own local formulations before we try COVID Organics or any other imported remedy.

“Every well-meaning nation has been in a race to find cures, remedies, and other medical supplies used for COVID-19, while we seem to wait for other nations to solve our problems”, Ohuabunwa added.
