‘Return Mercy’s Sanitary Pad’ – BBNaija’s Omashola Trolls Ike (Video)

Big Brother Naija 2019 housemate, Omashola has trolled his colleague and friend, Ike Onyema as he advised him to kindly return a facemask that looked like his girlfriend, Mercy Eke‘s sanitary pad.

Following the Covid-19 lockdown ease, Ike, Shola and other colleagues were spotted in a car heading to an undisclosed location.

Omashola then made a video which showed the unique facemask his colleague, Ike had worn on his face.

In the video which Omashola shared on his IG story, he could be heard mocking Ike’s facemask, attributing its looks to that of a sanitary pad which he alleged Ike stole from his girlfriend, Mercy Eke.

Omashola’s mocking words to Ike goes thus ;

“Let’s be honest, don’t Ike’s facemask look like sanitary pad? *laughs… It’s like he used all these sanitary pads, cos of Coronavirus. My nigga, get a new mask, your girlfriend (i.e. Mercy) is looking for her pad…”

COVID-19 Testing: Many Factors Hindering Our Target, Says NCDC

Chikwe Ihekweazu, director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), says the agency’s goal to test more people is being impeded by bottlenecks.

In April, the director-general said the NCDC is targeting two million tests in the next three months.

According to the agency’s situation report for May 17, 2020, Nigeria has tested 35,345 samples since recording the index case on February 27, 2020.

Speaking at the daily press briefing of the presidential task force on COVID-19 on Monday, Ihekweazu said there have been discussions with development partners around the world on how the country could increase its capacity for more tests.

“Yes, we did have a target of hitting two million tests in three months.

“This is the beginning of week three if I’m not mistaken, so we are not in the second month yet but the third week,” he said.

“Sometimes to drive improvement you have to set out targets for yourself and that is really what we have done; the improvement of testing. There are many bottlenecks to this.

“Throughout this weekend, we were working with our global partners on how to unbottle the supply chain challenges.

“They are actually going to yield fruit but I’m not going to say a date until I have those reagents in the country.

“So I’m hesitant to say this is when it would happen. The other thing is how do we stimulate more collection of samples from people.”

The director-general also said the number of tests conducted by each state would be published latest on Tuesday.

“It would be published so you can see that it is not just the testing in the lab.

“There are states that have no lab but have tested an incredible number compared to the total,” he said.

“We will discuss the numbers when we make them available later today or tomorrow.”

Olympic sprint legend Usain Bolt has become a father for the first time after welcoming the birth of a baby girl with partner Kasi Bennett.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness appeared to confirm the birth of Bolt’s daughter in a social media post.

“Congratulations to our sprint legend Usain Bolt and Kasi Bennett on the arrival of their baby girl!” Holness wrote on Twitter.

ABN TV reports said the couple’s daughter was born on Sunday.

No further details were immediately available.

Bolt, 33, had revealed he was expecting a daughter with Bennett on social media in March, jokingly warning any future suitors to steer clear of his daughter.

“Any man! Any boy! Don’t play with me!” the eight-time Olympic gold medallist quipped.

Bolt, the world record holder at 100m and 200m, retired from athletics in 2017 after a decade of dominance in men’s sprinting.

At the 2016 Olympics, Bolt became the only man to win the 100m and 200m titles at three consecutive Olympics.

Reps Question Health Minister On Whereabouts Of Chinese Doctors

Lawmakers at the House of Representatives have questioned the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, demanding full details of the activities and whereabouts of the Chinese doctors.

The lawmakers at their plenary on Tuesday said they are not satisfied with the statement of the Minister that the Chinese doctors are not guests of the Federal Ministry of Health but that of a Chinese firm in Abuja.

ABN TV reports that the resolution of the House stems from a motion of urgent public importance raised by Representative Dachung Bagos.

The House, in a separate motion, also resolved to investigate the status of medical and pharmaceutical research in the fight against COVID-19 in Nigeria.

They expressed worry that Nigerian scientists and researchers have not been given the necessary support and funding for medical research.

The Minister of Health las week Thursday told reporters not to question him over the whereabouts of Chinese medical experts who came into Nigeria to support the fight against COVID-19.

Ehanire, while responding to questions at the daily Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing said the medical personnel “are not guests of the Federal Government but CCECC, a construction company.”

The Chairman of Kano State Friday Mosques Imams’ Forum, is dead. He was aged 66.

One of the sons of the influential cleric, Muntaka Dan-Almajiri, said his father died on Monday night after a protracted illness at a hospital in the metropolis.

He however disclosed that the cleric’s funeral prayers would be observed at his residence at layin ‘Yan Kabalu, Fagge, in Kano metropolis on Tuesday by 2.00 p.m.

In his condolence message, Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, said: “Sheikh
Fadhlu Dan-Almajiri was a complete gentleman whose sterling qualities as a teacher and a leader proved how refined was the training he got from home.”

This was contained in a statement signed and issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, on Tuesday.

Ganduje described Sheikh Dan-Almajiri during his lifetime as a very peaceful scholar, whose worldview was how to promote peace and tranquillity among the human race

A popular Cameroonian pastor, Frankline Ndifor has died from COVID-19 barely a week after contracting the disease he claimed he could cure. 

The Pastor who was also a presidential candidate in the country’s last presidential election had laid hands and prayed for the healing of some Coronavirus patients who turned up at the premises of his Kingship International Ministries Church.

Dr Gaelle Nnanga who was called to treat Ndifor after he started suffering severe respiratory difficulties less than a week after falling ill with the virus, told Voice of America that the Pastor died less than 10 minutes after receiving treatment.

 

Shortly after Pastor Frankline Ndifor died, his supporters addressed him as a ‘prophet’ and blocked the entrance to his home in the capital city of Douala for eight hours on Saturday as medical staff tried to retrieve his body.

The Governor of the coastal region said a police force had to be deployed when supporters blocked the entrance to his home and claimed the pastor was on a spiritual retreat with God so could not be buried.

They reportedly sang and prayed for his resurrection throughout last weekend.

However after security operatives gained entrance into the late Pastor’s apartment, his corpse was retrieved and buried in front of his residence by officials of Cameroon’s COVID-19 response team.

One of the late Pastor’s followers, Rigobert Che confirmed that the “prophet” prayed for him and several others diagnosed with COVID-19 last Wednesday.

He said;

 

“This is a pastor that has been laying hands [on the sick] and claiming that he cures COVID-19.

“If you, the person that claims that you are curing COVID-19, you are dead, what about the fellow people that were affected by the COVID-19? Now that he is dead, I do not know how the people that he was laying hands on will be healed.”

 

Health officials are now asking all those who came in contact with the pastor to report to hospitals to be tested for COVID-19.

Ndifor came 7th out of nine candidates in 2018’s presidential election with 23,687 votes.

There have been 3,529 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 140 deaths in Cameroon.

Don’t Wear Face Masks If You Are Asthmatic, Say Experts

People who have asthma or other lung conditions should not wear a face mask if it makes it more difficult to breathe, experts have warned.

The British Government issued advice last week telling Brits to wear face masks where they can’t stay two metres away from other people to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Masks can help stop the spread of coronavirus – by catching droplets which infect other people – they may not stop the wearer from getting the virus, but prevents them from passing it into the others.

Masks could make it ‘harder to breathe’

Asthma UK said: “For some people with asthma, wearing a face covering might not be easy. It could make it feel harder to breathe.

“The government has advised the people with respiratory conditions don’t need to wear face coverings – so if you are finding it hard, then don’t wear one.”

The Government guidance says: “If you can, wear a face-covering in an enclosed space where social distancing isn’t possible and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

“This is most relevant for short periods indoors in crowded areas, for example, on public transport or in some shops.”

It adds: “Face coverings should not be used by children under the age of 2 or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly. For example, primary age children unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions.”

For people who suffer from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema or lung cancer, wearing masks can be particularly difficult.

‘Catch-22’ for vulnerable people

Immunology and infectious diseases specialist at New York University Dr Purvi Parikh told the MailOnline: “Those with lung conditions are in a catch-22 because they probably need the mask more than the average person but it can be challenging to breathe.

“A tight mask on your face can make anyone have trouble breathing.

“I even get it when I’m treating my patients.”

She said warm weather could make it even more difficult.

“We’re approaching summer-time so it’s hot outside, and when you’re consistently breathing hot air on top of your own breath that can be quite uncomfortable.”

The Government has published a how-to guide to help people make their own facial coverings – and stresses people should not be buying medical-grade masks needed by NHS staff and social care workers.

Dr Parikh said people who can wear masks comfortably – even if they have asthma or COPD – should do so where possible.

She said: “[Vulnerable] people should absolutely wear masks if they can.

Not only will it protect them but people with asthma or COPD may actually spread more of the virus because they’re coughing, sneezing and breathing harder than other people.”

Journalist Allegedly Detained For Criticising Lai Mohammed

Rotimi Jolayemi, a freelance broadcaster, has been detained for 12 days now allegedly on the order of Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, The Cable reports.

Jolayemi, known as Oba Akewi, is the vice-chairman Freelance and Independent Radio Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN), Osun state chapter.

Olu Olugbade, the FIBAN chairman who confirmed the development, said Jolayemi had recorded eight-minute audio criticising the minister and released via WhatsApp.

“The audio started going viral, and days after, his wife and brothers were traced in Kwara where they lived and were detained by the police,” Olugbade said.

“We were then told the minister had listened to the audio and tagged it hate speech. Comrade Jolayemi later showed up at the police headquarters in Ilorin and submitted himself for investigation. He was then moved to Abuja and since we’ve not been allowed access to him.

Every time we went there with our lawyers, they would turn us back. We asked that he be charged but the police say they don’t have anything to use against him yet.” he said

 

Olugbade said his organization has made an effort in appealing to the minister but its appeal fell on deaf ears. He said Jolayemi is a law-abiding citizen and would not set out to hurt the minister. He also raised concerns over the health condition of the detained broadcaster.

“Jolayemi’s health can’t cope with this kind of detention and I’m afraid if he’s not freed on time, things might get worse,” he said.

 

Osagie Obayuwana, president of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), in a statement, condemned the detention of Jolayemi’s family members, saying it is a violation of section 7 of the administration of criminal justice act, which forbids hostage-taking and the arrest of any person in place of another.

“It is worrisome that Alhaji Lai Mohammed would have a hand in the arrest of the wife of Mr Jolayemi, Mrs Dorcas Jolayemi, and two of his brothers who were kept in detention for eight days, nine days and two days respectively as hostages, while the journalist, Mr Rotimi Jolayemi, was being sought,” the statement read.

“Furthermore, that even since Mr Jolayemi surrendered himself to the police headquarters at Ilorin, Kwara state on May 6, 2020, he is still being held till date, 12 days later, without being charged to court or granted bail.

“The continued detention of Mr. Jolayemi by the police and at the instance of Alhaji Lai Mohammed is tantamount to punishing a citizen for the expression of his opinion; this is not justifiable in our Nigeria of today.

As the mouthpiece of the General Buhari Govemment and Minister of Information and Culture, one would have thought that Alhaji Mohammed would subscribe to the democratic tenet of letting different ideas contend; furthermore, that the culture of free expression of all shades of opinion is one that the Hon. Minister would hold dear. Being a man of letters himself, one would have also expected that the Hon. Minister would react in writing to the content of Mr. Jolayemi’s poem.” the statement read

 

CDHR said it is surprising that the minister would want to be remembered for being associated with a culture of repression.

Demanding the immediate release of Jolayemi, CDHR also said a public apology must be made to him, his wife and his brothers, and payment of compensation to all four of them.

 

The minister did not return calls placed to his phone line and was yet to respond to a message seeking his reaction. Frank Mba, police spokesperson, did not also respond to message seeking reaction on the matter.

Lagos Assembly Speaker, Obasa, Gives Mistress N34m To Organise Media, CSO Parley

In another grand corruption, abuse of office and misuse of public funds, SaharaReporters has uncovered how Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, made the parliament approve N34.7m for the organisation of media and civil society organisations parley.

Sources within the Lagos Assembly, who spoke with SaharaReporters, revealed that Obasa gave the responsibility of putting together the parley to his “protocol and foreign relationship madam”.

The sources said that lawmakers and officials not only termed the act as an abuse of office by the Speaker but also demeaning of the House Committee on Media saddled with the responsibility of organising such an event.

In the letter directed to the Clerk of the House and obtained by SaharaReporters, the media and CSO parley allowed the Assembly to inform the media and the CSOs about its activities particularly focusing on the House achievements.

“The reason for this is that the media and the CSOs serve as the communication link between the government and the people. They are the ones to inform the public about the activities of the government.

“The event also allows the media and the CSOs to ask questions on government policies. It has, therefore, become an annual barometer for measuring the performance of the House.

“To this end as customary in the House, may I call your attention to the need to make preparations for the provision of newspaper adverts, banners, a programme of event, entertainments, decorations and honorarium for the media and CSOs.

“Given the above, you may wish to obtain the approval of the Rt. Hon. Speaker, the release of the sum of N34,700,000 only being the amount to be expended on the listed items,” the letter reads.

The sources said the breakdown, which was attached to the budget, was not only ridiculous but also mind-boggling and shameful.

“Contrary to what used to be the responsibility of the House Committee on Media under previous Speakers, Obasa assigned the task to his protocol and foreign relationship madam, not even the CPS.

“He assigned her to organise the parley at the colossal N34m for a meeting with less than 60 media houses and CSOs.

“The ridiculous breakdown of payment and cost allocations are mind-boggling and shameful,” the source said.

SaharaReporters had, in a series of reports, exposed how Obasa and some of his allies at the Lagos Assembly diverted public funds for personal use.

The latest revealed how the speaker, Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni, and 17 other members received N80m as estacode for a five-day event.

Some of the reports showed how Obasa fraudulently approved the sum of N258m for the printing of invitation cards for the inauguration of the Ninth Assembly two months after the event held.\

FG Queries Perm Sec For Buying Uncompleted Building For N7bn

The Federal Government has queried the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr Mohammed Bello, for allegedly buying what it described as “uncompleted carcass” building for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the sum of N7bn.

Bello was said to have superintended over the transaction for the purchase when he was still the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

He was also accused of giving out seven deep drilling rigs for borehole procured at N1.3bn to some unnamed individuals under “fraudulent arrangements.”

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, made the allegations in a leaked query she issued to the permanent secretary on May 11, 2020.

The query with reference number HCSF/PSO/AOD/P.030/5B has “Allegations of acts of serious misconduct in your former post of permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development: Preliminary letter/query” as its title.

Yemi-Esan said she issued the query on the order of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who she said had been briefed about Bello’s conducts.

Quoting from the civil service rules, PSR 030401 and 030402, the HOCSF described the allegations against the permanent secretary as acts of serious misconduct which can lead to dismissal if proven.

She, therefore, gave the embattled permanent secretary a 72-hour ultimatum to respond to the allegations if he so desires.

The query read, “The attention of Mr President has been drawn to the acts of serious misconduct against you in your former post as the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on which he has given further directive.

“Specifically, it was alleged that: (a) in spite of the budgetary release of the N98,405,763,678.68 in 2018 (which represents 99.44 of 2018 appropriation), you did not take necessary action to pay the eligible contractors which led to the ministry having an outstanding contractual liability in the sum of N48.429,543,895.722.

“(b) under your leadership as the accounting officer, the ministry utilised the entire 2019 first-quarter release of N7,737,208, 135.18 to pay for the 2018 contracts that were fully funded in 2018 which constitutes virement without authority:

“(c) as accounting officer, you oversaw a transaction for the purchase of a building for the use of the ministry at the sum of N7,044,746,264.06 without the conduct of the mandatory statutory structural and mechanical integrity tests: and prior approval of the FCDA Public Building Department: the building was eventually found to be an uncompleted carcass requiring billions of naira to complete and make safe for occupation;

“(f) under your watch as the accounting officer, the ministry procured seven deep drilling rigs for a borehole at an average cost of N300,000,000. 00 without recourse to the Federal Executive Council;

“(e) and in April 2019, you gave out the seven rigs procured at over NI .3 billion to some individuals under fraudulent arrangements, without the approval of the minister; and one of the rigs linked to you is yet to be returned despite several written reminders; and

“(f) you misapplied the intervention funds approved for the purchase of strategic grains and the establishment of the Rural Grazing Area Settlements in violation of extent Financial Regulations; two of such misapplications are:

“i. the use of N2.026,838,775.25 to pay contractors and execute programmes from the funds released for emergency procurement of strategic grains which is unrelated to the purpose of the funds.

“ii. the use of N3,527, 300, 419.06 for the payment of questionable contracts awarded under the 2018 appropriation from the rural grazing area settlement scheme which is not related to the purpose of the funds.”
