We’ll Jail Parents Who Enrol Children Into Almajiri System — El-Rufai

1

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has warned that parents who enrol their children in the Almajiri education system stand the risk of prosecution and two years imprisonment.

ABN TV Reports that Governor El-Rufai stated this when he visited 200 Almajiri children repatriated from Nasarawa State and undergoing rehabilitation and optical screening at Government College, Kurmin Mashi, Kaduna, on Monday, May 25.

Almajiri is ideally a system of Islamic education practised in northern Nigeria, where young children leave their homes to live with Islamic scholars and learn about religion.

However, the system has over the years been corrupted with thousands of such children roaming the streets begging for alms and food, and without any form of education.

Speaking during the visit, Governor El-Rufai said any Islamic cleric who enrols any child into the Almajiri system would also be prosecuted, jailed, and fined N100,000 or N200,000 per child.

Governor El-Rufai while expressing his delight at the rehabilitation of the repatriated Almajiris, said the state has a responsibility to do whatever it can to give them hope and a better future.

“We will, therefore, continue to take delivery of every Almajiri pupil indigenous to Kaduna state for rehabilitation, treatment and enrollment into formal school nearest to where their parents live.

“We will continue to do this until we clear Kaduna state of the menace of the Almajiri system, which is not education but the abuse of the privilege and future of a child.

“Our ultimate goal is for them to acquire formal education without depriving them of the opportunity to acquire Quranic education.

“They will continue their Quranic education but under the care of their parents and not under someone who does not know them or paid to look after them,” he said

The UK government has announced June 15 for the reopening of all non-essential retail stores as part of plans to further ease the lockdown measures.

ABN TV reports that the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday night disclosed this at the daily Downing Street press conference.

He said some easing of Lockdown Measures will begin along with primary school openings planned from June 1, with outdoor markets and car showrooms among those allowed to become operational from next week.

Then, from June 15, we intend to allow all other non-essential retail, ranging from department stores to small, independent shops, to reopen.

“This change will be contingent upon progress against the five tests and will only be permitted for those retail premises which are COVID-secure,” Johnson said.

Non-essential retail will include shops selling clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, books, and electronics, plus tailors, auction houses, photography studios, and indoor markets.

“I want people to be confident they can shop safely, provided they follow the social distancing rules for all premises,” Johnson said.

“These are careful but deliberate steps on the road to rebuilding our country,” the UK prime minister said, adding that around 25,000 contact tracers to keep track of the infection rate will be in place by June 1 to help open up the economy.

He also noted that businesses will only be able to open once they have completed a risk assessment in consultation with trade union representatives or workers, and are confident they are managing the risk.

According to the Johns Hopkins University data, the number of COVID-19 infections in the country has crossed 260,000 and more 35, 000 people have died.

WHO Fears “Silent” COVID-19 Epidemic In Africa

1

Africa has so far been spared the worst impact of the coronavirus, but World Health Organisation, WHO, is worried the continent could face a “silent epidemic” if its leaders fail to prioritise testing for it.

“My first point for Africa, my first concern, is that a lack of testing is leading to a silent epidemic in Africa.

“So, we must continue to push leaders to prioritise testing,” WHO Special Envoy Samba Sow, told a news conference in Geneva on Monday.

The WHO’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said Africa was the region with the fewest diagnosed coronavirus cases, accounting for less than 1.5 per cent of the global total and just 0.1per cent of deaths.

The WHO regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, said some countries had taken measures to curb the disease at a high economic cost.

Those measures meant the pandemic was having a milder impact so far than some models had predicted, Moeti said.

Tedros credited the continent’s experience dealing with other epidemics as helping it scale up its response to the coronavirus and be spared the impact seen elsewhere so far.

All African countries had preparedness plans in place, he said, although there were still “gaps and vulnerabilities”.

A welder, Femi Onifade, who was arrested by the personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ondo State Command, for allegedly defiling his nine and seven-year-old daughters, has denied the allegation.

The 48-year-old man was accused of committing the incestuous act at his residence, No 27 Liberty Hospital Road, Oluwatuyi area of Akure.

Femi stated that the children could have been defiled by an outsider, insisting that he knew nothing about it.

The welder alleged that it was his wife, who raised the false alarm against him.

Femi, the welder said, “I used to have quarrels with my wife. We had a clash around 11 pm on that day and she left the house and because of the curfew in town, I didn’t want her to take the children with her.

“I insisted that the children must remain with me. My wife left and did not come back.

“I went to her family to report and her family begged me. My wife came back two days later and asked me what happened to the children when she examined their private parts.

“My wife accused me of sleeping with our daughters and I said I could not have done it because it was a taboo in Yoruba land.

“I am not happy because I was accused of what I did not do. I went to the palace of the Deji of Akure to take an oath for people to believe me.

“I don’t drink and I don’t smoke. It is a lie. I cannot sleep with my children. The rape could have been from an outsider and not me. I didn’t know about it

“The children were crying because they did not see their mother that night. My children used to cry whenever my wife and I were fighting.

“It was a neighbour, who told my wife that one of the girls cried till daybreak.”

However, his wife, Tope, who vowed to quit the 11-year-old marriage, said Femi told her that what she noticed in their daughters’ private parts was evidence of dysentery when she raised the alarm over her discovery.

Tope said the children informed her that their father inserted something in their private parts and also used his mouth.

She stated, “The day we had a quarrel, my husband did not allow me to sleep in the house. I asked neighbours to beg him on my behalf, but he said I should go. He did not allow me to take any of my daughters along.

“I had to find somewhere to sleep. The next day, a neighbour called me to say one of our daughters cried all through the night.

“The neighbour begged me to come back home. I came back and in the night, I noticed something in one of the children’s private parts. I asked my husband and he told me it was dysentery.

“I woke up the eldest daughter and asked her and she pointed at their father. The children said their father used to put something in their private parts.”

Tope added that tests carried out on the children revealed that both had been deflowered.

The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in the state, Olufemi Omole, said the suspect would soon be charged.

Time For Igbo To Mobilise, Give Our Governors Necessary Support Is Now – Elliot Uko

Founder, Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) and Secretary, Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA), Elliot Uko, has urged Igbo to rally round eastern governors to enable them to secure Igboland and resist the marginalisation of the region.

ABN TV reports that In a statement he signed, Uko noted that ‘given the obtuse political arrangement in Nigeria today, the deliberate isolation and oppression of our region, common sense demands we stick together with our elected leaders, especially as they carefully manoeuvre the intricate web of intrigue and marginalisation meted out against our people by the central government.

“Finding ourselves in the uncomfortable position we are facing today, with an unfriendly central government boastfully applying the strange and distasteful 97%/5% formula that jolted and discombobulated the land, especially through discriminatory appointments and lopsided infrastructural development of the regions, we need as a people to come together as one and face the future united.

“Disrespecting our governors will not solve any of our problems.

“Spectators do not see all the challenges facing the actual players in the pitch. We know that our governors are facing a tremendous challenge.

“The uncommon times we are in, the unpredictable economic future facing us all, as a result of the lockdown, the incursion into our homestead by belligerent and bellicose herdsmen, the uncertain future of our singular-source wealth (petroleum ), the crippling unitary structure and regional, ethnic and religious realities of our time, makes it all too necessary, that we wake up to the fact, that we need a robust political leadership.

“The urgency and necessity of this fact are so obvious today.

“When you add this to the uncomfortable fact that we are constantly mocked as lacking effective leadership, it becomes absolutely necessary that we as a people must sit up and influence, guide and inspire our governors, lest a worse situation envelopes us all ” he noted.

According to him, ‘name-calling, disrespecting and distancing from our elected leaders, hasn’t helped our cause as a people. It is time for Ndigbo to ask our governors: what’s going on?

“Are there unseen difficulties, challenges, problems or pressures holding you guys down? We must face reality. Alaigbo is at the bottom.

“We are talented and gifted people. We are not getting it right. How come?”

Tension In Ngor Okpala As Naval Personnel Allegedly Kill 2 Youths

1

Tension has enveloped UmuOkereke autonomous community in Ngor Okpala council area of Imo State with reports of naval officers allegedly killing two youths at Okpala junction, forcing irate youths of the community to barricade the road in protest.

Daily Sun reliably gathered that some youths who were conveying a corpse in an ambulance on Monday were accosted by some naval personnel around the Okpala junction leading to Mbaise and that there was an altercation between the naval personnel and the youths.

It was learnt that the youths had explained to the military officers that they were conveying the corpse to the nearby village for burial.

The naval personnel had reportedly insisted on not allowing the youths to continue with the corpse and starting shooting sporadically to scare them away, an action which triggered pandemonium as the people within the scene scampered for safety.

In the process of the fracas, stray bullets were said to have stricken two of the youths, killing them instantly.

Angered by the action of the naval personnel, the youths went on to barricade the junction, denying commuters access through it.

Anukam Ibeawuchi, an indigene of the community, complained that personnel of the Nigeria Navy have been harassing the people of the community and that the latest incident was caused by the naval men refusing to allow the youth, who were conveying a body in an ambulance to proceed, to their destination.

‘These naval men have been harassing the people of this community; they caused the ugly incident which resulted in the killing of two innocent youths,’ Ibeawuchi told Daily Sun.

‘The state government had given people permission to bury their dead and I don’t see the reason why the Navy should be harassing people who had a body in an ambulance. The youths did not disturb anybody as they were conveying the corpse, but the Navy would not allow them.’

Spokesman of the Imo State Police Command Mr Orlando Ikeokwu, who confirmed the incident, said however that he was yet to be briefed regarding the full circumstances.
