Missing Brother Found Dead Inside Lawmaker’s Car Trunk

It was a shocking moment in Ebonyi state as the younger brother to a member representing Ebonyi North West in the State House of Assembly, Victor Aleke, was found dead in his own brother car booth.

The deceased, Mr Samuel Aleke, a middle-aged man was said to have left his house in the evening of Saturday 23rd of May 2020 and was not seen until Sunday the 24th in the lawmaker car booth along Nkwagu axis of Abakaliki/Afikpo express road.

According to an eye witness and a relative of the family who refused to have his name mention in print, he revealed that the deceased who resides along Chinedu Ogah avenue had informed his wife that he was going to collect earpiece from a friend.

The source stated that after several hours of waiting for his return to no avail, the wife raised alarm and the search for him commenced until Sunday when his body was found dead inside the trunk belonging to his brother with wounds on his face and back which might suggest that he might have been beaten and strangled to death by his unknown assailants.

According to the source, there was no sign that very Saturday, would be the last day Aleke 3 kids and pregnant wife would see him alive again stressing that the deceased had always been a gentleman who does not engage in any trouble.

He, however, confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police and expressed optimism that the motive behind his assassination would be unravelled.

Police Spokesman, DSP Loveth Odah confirmed the incident and noted that the deceased’s corpse was recovered by the police along Nkwagu axis along Abakaliki/Afikpo express road.

Her words ” the information available reveals that the deceased said he was going to collect earpiece and purchase recharge card.

“The deceased corpse has been deposited at the mortuary and investigation is on to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of the dastardly act”.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has emerged the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) faction believed to be loyal to the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, ABN TV reports.

Ize-Iyamu, a former Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), emerged on Tuesday night in Abuja through consensus candidate.

He is expected to slug it out with Governor Godwin Obaseki for the direct primary of the party slated for June 22.

He was presented by chairman of the screening committee, Senator Francis Alimikhena, the representative of Edo North Senatorial District.

Other members of the screening committee were a former Edo Deputy Governor Lucky Imasuen; Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe; ex-Edo Speaker Thomas Okosun; former Minority Whip of the House of Representatives Samson Osagie; ex-member of the House of Representatives Patrick Obahiagbon and Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives, Peter Akpatason.

Aside from Ize-Iyamu, who was last week granted a waiver to contest by the national leadership of APC, the other screened aspirants were a former Minister of State for Works Chris Ogiemwonyi; ex-Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr. Pius Odubu, and Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd.)

No Man Can Stop Me From Returning As Edo Governor – Obaseki

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki says he is confident of returning to power as the first man of the state because “power comes from God.”

The governor who disclosed this on Wednesday, in an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, noted that he is a man of peace, not a violent person.

“I am not a violent person. But I am confident that the way I got into power is the same way I will return.

“God gave me power. If he wants me to return I will continue. No man can stop me. Power comes from God,” he said.

Obaseki speaking concerning violence during election said he has always canvassed for peace and believes election should not lead to bloodshed.

The governor who also spoke concerning the political rift within his party the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, stated that he is not distracted, adding that his focus is on developing Edo State.

“We have always canvassed for peace. What are the issues in Edo and what are the issues that cannot be resolved in a democracy? Our concern is to use the resources of the people to develop the state.

“This shouldn’t lead to bloodshed. We will not accept to be cowed and intimidated because some people think that they can manipulate rules and cut corners,” he added.

When asked if it’s not the resources of the people of Edo State that was used for him to become the governor, Obaseki said, “I have friends with resources. I worked for eight years behind the scene before I became governor.

“So all that insinuations about using somebody’s resources…I became Governor on the platform of the party and I am grateful for it.”

He expressed confidence that the rule of law will prevail in the forthcoming Edo State election because he is sure that Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari believes in the rule of law and will allow things to be done openly.

Obaseki further noted that he is not in contest with anyone, stressing that he is confident of victory.

“It does not matter whether it is direct or indirect (primaries), I will win,” he said.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling APC, currently led by the National Chairman of the party and former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole had earlier on May 22 announced its decision to adopt direct primary for the coming governorship primaries in Edo State scheduled to hold on June 22.

Nigeria Records 276 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Now 8,344

The confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) have increased to 8,344 in Nigeria, ABN TV reports.

This is after 276 new infections were recorded in the country on Tuesday.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known on its verified Twitter handle.

“276 new cases of #COVID19; Lagos-161 Rivers-36 Edo-27 Kaduna-19 Nasarawa-10 Oyo-6 Kano-4 Delta-3 Ebonyi-3 Gombe-2 Ogun-1 Ondo-1 Borno-1 Abia-1 Bauchi-1.”

Black Man ‘Killed By Minneapolis Police’ Has Been Identified

The unarmed Black man who died Monday in Minneapolis Police custody after cops tried to arrest him under the auspices of “forgery” has been identified.

George Floyd is the name of the handcuffed man who was shown on viral video being pinned to the ground by a Minneapolis Police Department officer who appeared to be steadily applying pressure, according to a report by Newsone.

Floyd could be heard on the video repeating, “I can’t breathe.”

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump tweeted Floyd’s name Tuesday morning as outcry over what witnesses called “murder” was growing.

Crump announced later on Tuesday that he was representing Floyd’s family and called the deadly police response “abusive, excessive and inhumane.”

Crump made a plea via social media earlier in the day for people to help him identify Floyd or his family.

The Minneapolis Police Department was quick to announce that no weapons were involved in the man’s death it downplayed as a “medical incident,” but the video prompted speculation on social media that he was killed as a result of police brutality. That sentiment was echoed by Crump, who tweeted that Floyd was “killed by Minneapolis police”. Crump rightfully added in the tweet that forgery, the reported suspicion under which cops approached Floyd, is not a crime punishable by death.

Crump is also an attorney in two other high-profile cases involving white people killing unarmed Black people. He represents the families of Ahmaud Arbery — the man who was jogging when a father-son team of vigilantes hunted him down and shot him in broad daylight in the middle of a road in Georgia — and Breonna Taylor — the EMT in Lousiville who was sleeping in her own home when police shot eight times while trying to serve a no-knock warrant at the wrong home looking for a suspect who was already in custody.

The Minneapolis Police Department’s issued a press release about the incident that made no mention of the still-unidentified officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck. Instead, the department chose to classify the death as a “medical incident.”

However, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo announced during a press conference Tuesday morning that both of the officers involved in Floyd’s death were on “relieved of duty status,” which reportedly differs from the standard protocol of placing cops on administrative leave following the death of a suspect.

A public information officer for the Minneapolis Police Department had previously said that Floyd “appeared to be under the influence.” When reporters asked whether that was a reference to drugs or alcohol or something else, Arradondo said the matter was under investigation. The case was swiftly referred to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension before it was announced Tuesday morning that the FBI would also be joining the investigation.

During the same press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey spoke in no uncertain terms about how unacceptable Floyd’s death is and called it “wrong on every level.” He said Floyd’s life “mattered.”

Buhari Never Cancelled Memos Signed Off By Abba Kyari – Presidency

The presidency on Tuesday night denied that President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled memos signed off by the late former Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari.

Some reports had suggested that about 150 unauthorized memos may have been uncovered in the Chief of Staff’s office.

But a statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the president on media and publicity, described the report as fake news.

It said the president was duly re-elected and has not ceded his powers to any other individual.

The statement read: “The attention of the Presidency has been drawn to media reports alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled a number of memos and appointments signed off by his former Chief of Staff

“Not surprisingly, these reports have quoted unnamed sources.

“There is not a grain of truth in these reports and Nigerians should please ignore the insinuations behind them.

“President Buhari was duly re-elected by Nigerians in February 2019. He has not and will never cede to anyone else, that power and trust given to him by the Nigerian people.”

Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said that Nigerians are lucky to have a leader like his principal at a time like this.

Adesina stated this via his social media handle while dismissing attempts to pitch him against his boss, the president. According to him, he is a Buharist.

FBI To Investigate Death Of Black Man After Video Shows Officer Kneeling On Neck [VIDEOS]

The FBI and the Minneapolis Police Department are investigating the arrest of a black man who died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by an officer’s knee, in an episode filmed by a bystander and denounced by the mayor on Tuesday.

The arrest took place on Monday evening, the police said in a statement after officers responded to a call about a man suspected of forgery. The police said the man, believed to be in his 40s, was found sitting on top of a blue car and “appeared to be under the influence.”

“He was ordered to step from his car,” the department’s statement said. “After he got out, he physically resisted officers. Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress.”

The statement said that officers called for an ambulance and that the man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, “where he died a short time later.”

On Tuesday morning, without referring to the video recorded by a bystander, the police updated a statement, titled “Man Dies After Medical Incident During Police Interaction,” that said additional information had “been made available” and that the FBI was joining the investigation.

The bystander video that circulated widely on social media Monday night shows a white Minneapolis police officer pressing his knee into a black man’s neck during an arrest, as the man repeatedly says “I can’t breathe” and “please I can’t breathe.”

Within minutes the man, lying face down in the street with his hands cuffed behind his back, becomes silent and motionless, the video shows; the officer continues to pin the man to the pavement with his knee.

Bystanders plead, curse, and begging the officer to stop and telling him the man’s nose is bleeding. Another officer faces the people gathered on the sidewalk. An ambulance medic arrives and, reaching under the officer’s knee, feels for a pulse on the man’s neck.

The medic turns away, and a stretcher is wheeled over. The arrested man is then rolled onto the stretcher, loaded into an ambulance and taken away.

The video did not show what happened before the officer pinned the man to the ground by his neck. Chief Medaria Arradondo of the Minneapolis Police said at a news conference Tuesday that he had received information the night before that he “deemed necessary to contact the special agent in charge of the Minneapolis bureau of the F.B.I.”

He said he asked the agency to investigate, and declined to comment on what information he received.

The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, on Tuesday, described the event as “awful” and “traumatic.”

“Being black in America should not be a death sentence. For five minutes, we watched a white officer press his knee into a black man’s neck. Five minutes,” Mr Frey said in a statement.

“When you hear someone calling for help, you’re supposed to help. This officer failed in the most basic, human sense,” he said. “All I keep coming back to is this: This man should not have died.”

The police department’s statement said that no weapons were used and that the officers’ body cameras were recording. Mr Frey said at a news conference that he had seen the video “taken and posted by a civilian” but not the body camera footage.

The department said it had asked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate. The bureau did not reply early on Tuesday for an emailed request for comment.

“Whatever the investigation reveals, it does not change the simple truth: He should still be with us this morning,” the mayor said. “I believe what I saw and what I saw is wrong on every level.”

Raise Funds For Education Like You Did For COVID-19 – ASUU Tells FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has called on the Federal Government, FG, to declare a state of emergency in the education sector and raise funds to tackle the rot therein, just as it did to contain Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

ABN TV reports that The National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who stated this in a chat with Vanguard on Tuesday, said the effect of poor funding of education became glaring when COVID-19 broke out in the country and most of the nation’s teaching hospitals did not have ventilators to help keep patients alive.

Ogunyemi noted that China, where the disease broke out, was able to quickly tackle the scourge by resorting to public tertiary teaching hospitals because they were well funded by the state.

“Look at how much money has been raised to fight COVID-19 pandemic. This is because it is seen as a health emergency. We can do the same for the education sector.

“The poor funding of the sector has deep damaging effects on our national life. A poorly trained medical student would end up being a great danger to the health of the people.

“There are cash cows like the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and others that funds can be drawn from.

“Instead of doing so, our politicians are only interested in drawing funds from them to prosecute elections. Have you ever seen the budgets of the CBN or the NNPC?

“If we want to really catch up with the rest of the world, we must adequately fund the education sector. We plead with parents, guardians, students and Nigerians generally to understand our position and know that we cannot go on postponing the evil day.

“In fact, the evil day manifested in out lack of adequate response to the COVID-19 outbreak by our teaching hospitals,” he said.

On the complaints that trailed the payment of February and March 2020 salaries of lecturers through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS, Ogunyemi said his union had been vindicated.

“As we speak, our members in some universities namely Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Akwa, University of Jos, University of Maiduguri, Abubakar Tarawa Balewa University, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture are yet to be paid their salaries.

“Ridiculously, some lecturers were paid 20 per cent of their salaries. Those who got anything reasonable were paid 80 per cent of their salaries.

“We have said it that IPPIS is too straitjacketed and not suitable for the university system. Even some sister unions that did not see what we had seen about IPPIS are now complaining.

“The only solution is for the government to do away with the toga of arrogance and embrace our Nigerian Universities Accountability and Transparency System.

“We are sounding a note of warning that we won’t tolerate further mutilation of our salaries. Our members have been on the same salary structure since 2009.

“The government has been provocative and lackadaisical in its approach.  How do you keep shifting the goal post when a goal is about to be scored,” he stressed.

The ASUU boss added that it seemed some people in government were interested in punishing university lecturers for no just cause.

Recall that ASUU has been on strike since early March this year over IPPIS, implementation of a Memorandum of Action signed with the government,  better funding of education generally among other issues.

Going by the position of the union, even if schools shut down due to COVID-19 outbreak are asked to reopen now, the university system may still experience Industrial disharmony.

MURIC Calls For Impeachment Of Governors Who Allowed Congregational Eid Prayers

Ishaq Akintola, director of Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, says governors who allowed congregational Eid prayers committed impeachable offences.

On Sunday, congregational prayers held in different states while some religious faithful openly flouted guidelines issued by the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 such as physical distancing and compulsory use of face masks in public places.

For instance, in Kano, which currently has the second-highest number of active COVID-19 cases and fatalities in the country, Eid prayers featured large gatherings of people.

In a statement, Akintola said the actions of the governors ran contrary to directives by the federal government, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

He asked lawmakers of the states to “do the needful as the governors committed impeachable offences”.

“It is a shame that governors can play to the gallery even when it has to do with human life. This is not Islam. It is articulated religiosity,” Akintola said.

“There must be consequences when people in positions of authority gamble with the lives of their citizens.

“This singular action has put the whole country in danger and we only have to wait for the next two weeks as the virus incubates for us to know the impact of the governors’ intransigence.

“This is how not to worship Allah. Neither is it about the right to celebrate a festival. MURIC as a human rights body will not defend the indefensible. Islam is a religion of justice.

“Therefore we will not bend the rules or change the goal post after the game has already started just because Muslim governors are involved this time around.

“The fact that we vowed to promote Allah-given fundamental human rights of Muslims does not mean that we would look away when Muslims do the wrong thing.

“After all we were all here when Christians marked Easter without fanfare, pomp and pageantry. So why can’t we as Muslims control ourselves?

“We have not seen the end of this incident if we have conscious lawmakers in the state assemblies.

“Any lawmaker worth his salt will know that the action of the erring governors stand in contra-distinction to the provisions of Article 14 Section 2(b) of the1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which stipulates that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

“In essence, the governors have committed impeachable offences. We, therefore, call on the state legislators to do the needful.

“We do not want governors who do not care about human life.

“The choice before the governors is this: apologise publicly or resign and pack out of government house, otherwise your impeachment is just around the corner.”

He apologised to Nigerians “on behalf of the Muslim community”.

Akintola on behalf of MURIC, also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to speak against the Congregational act which he described as an embarrassment.

“Every Nigerian Muslim must take responsibility for this. These recalcitrant governors have embarrassed Islamdom.

“We must admit our wrong, particularly because what we did is capable of bringing untold hardship upon the whole country.

“The next two weeks will tell. But to start with, we must show remorse and apologise to fellow Nigerians for exposing the country to danger,” he said.

“It is on this note that we of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) tender unreserved apology, first to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Government and all law-abiding citizens in the country.

“If we have always been quick to confront those who maltreat Muslims, we must not be silent when the Muslims themselves wrongly defy the rest of Nigerians and embark on actions capable of causing mass death among innocent Nigerians.

“We must speak truth to power because the truth is sacrosanct. The governors simply went on a show of shame.

“It is disgraceful. It is a huge blunder. When did Nigerian Muslims become more Muslim than their Makkan counterparts?

“Why must we assemble for Congregational Eid Prayers in Nigeria when Muslims in all Arab countries prayed at home? Muslims in Senegal, Gambia, Ghana and other West African countries prayed at home.

“President Muhammadu Buhari must not allow these erring governors to go scot-free. They must be sanctioned. FG must speak up.

“The action of these recalcitrant governors must be condemned in strong terms. Thereafter, Mr President must design suitable punishments that will touch only the office and personality of the governors without necessarily affecting the gullible and misled citizens in the state.

“Those who fail to take responsibility have no cassu belli for occupying the government house.”
