Obaseki Orders Investigation Into Death Of Slain UNIBEN Student

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the Department of Microbiology, University of Benin (UNIBEN), in Ikpoba Hill axis of Benin City, the state capital.

Miss Omozuwa a student of UNIBEN was alleged to have been raped after her head was smashed with a fire extinguisher at a Pentecostal church in Benin, which consequently led to her death.

In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, said Governor Obaseki has mandated the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other relevant security agencies to fish out the culprits, who perpetrated the dastardly act and bring them to justice.

“The governor is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

“We have been in consultation with the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and have mandated thorough investigation of the matter to ensure that those who are responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.”

He added that the state government would ensure that the full weight of the law run its course and that the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law and other such laws related to rape and sexual abuse are exploited to get justice for the deceased.

Mr Osagie expressed the Governor’s deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

He noted that it was imperative to respect the privacy of the grieving family as they pass through this difficult time.

As the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB celebrates and honours its fallen heroes and heroines, many Nigerians of Igbo extraction, Saturday took to the micro-blogging sites, (twitter and Facebook) to pen down stories that touch the heart.

The 48-year-old, former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, was not left out, as he enlightened Nigerians with his father’s words of wisdom.

Read what Osita Chidoka wrote below: “My father is 93 years old and lived through Biafra as a middle-aged man. He suffered the loss of family members, abandoned properties as he lived in Port Harcourt.

“He never quite recovered from the War.

“Whenever he visited me in Abuja, he gave me the same advice. Always park your car facing the exit Always buy fuel at a half tank, in case you have to run back to the East.

“His friends all got stuck in Port Harcourt due to no fuel and many died from the shelling Know your route to the East avoiding possible volatile areas.

“Igbos coming from the North lost their lives at certain communities on their way home. Keep some cash at home. Banks did not work as Port Harcourt fell to the federal troops.

“His advice always struck me as the effect of trauma, untreated. Interestingly, refusal to discuss Biafra and resolve the trauma has led to a generation who did not experience the war, taking the lead on the conversation.

“This generation leading the conversation has its implications for the nation.

PDP National Chairman Berates Buhari’s Performance After Five Years In Office — Uche Secondus

The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Uche Secondus, has described the five years’ administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as a waste and a road that ought not to be taken.

In a statement on Friday, the PDP national chairman said that in the last five years, all negative indexes in the country’s socio-political and economic life as a nation were activated.

Speaking further, he noted that in 2015, the global international community stood in salute for Nigeria for the great feat recorded in the area of democracy but rather than progress from it, the nation under the watch of the APC has continued to go in retrogression.

In the key areas of security, corruption, threats on democratic institutions, unity of the country and economic development on which the Buhari administration had hinged its promises to Nigerians, the PDP also scored the administration low.

Chevron To Sack 6,750 Staff

The United States super oil major, Chevron Corporation, has slated 6,750 staff for the sack in one of the biggest global mass disengagement of the work force.

The mass sack, the company with third biggest Joint ventures in Nigeria said, represents a cut of between 10 per cent and 15 per cent of its worldwide workforce as part of an ongoing restructuring at the second-largest U.S. oil producer.

A spokeswoman for Chevron, Veronica Flores-Paniagua, confirmed this while maintaining that Chevron, which has 45,000 employees, expects to remove about 10 to 15 per cent of its global staff to “match projected activity levels.”

The oil producer previously disclosed a 30 per cent reduction in its 2020 spending and some voluntary job cuts amid this year’s sharp drop in oil prices and lower demand for oil and gas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chevron has been widely seen as the standard-bearer of financial discipline in the oil industry and was among the first to make significant budget cuts as oil demand plummeted.

Last year, it abandoned a takeover bid for Anadarko Petroleum Corp rather than get into a bidding war with Occidental Petroleum Corp.

Chevron pocketed a $1 billion break fee while Occidental has faced investor wrath for its ill-timed deal. U.S. crude oil prices have nearly halved this year to about $33 a barrel as the COVID- 19 pandemic slashed travel and led to stay-at-home orders that have cut oil demand by as much as two million barrels per day. Chevron this month said it would reduce planned U.S. shale output by about 125,000 BPD.

The about 4,500 to 6,750 job cuts envisioned are to “address current market conditions,” with varying impact on each business unit and region, said Flores- Paniagua.

Most reductions will take place this year. “This is a difficult decision and we do not take it lightly,” she added.

At its annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday, No. 1 U.S. oil producer Exxon- Mobil Corp said it had not yet taken steps to reduce its workforce.”

Police Officer Allegedly Opens Fire On Colleagues In Lagos

A police officer has been arrested after opening fire on his colleagues at Onikan, killing some of them today May 31.

According to reports, the officer whose name has not been revealed, went berserk around 5 am following a disagreement with other members of his team.

After opening fire on his colleagues, the officer who is attached to the Federal Inland Revenue Service FIRS hijacked their operational vehicle and drove straight to Akoka in Yaba where he attempted to force his way into a building.

The building had a metallic door and the policeman allegedly opened fire on the property to gain access. No fewer than 30 bullet holes were counted in an apartment, corridor, and ceiling of the premises.

Men from the Bariga Police Division and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were alerted and they were able to disarm the officer and take him into custody.

It is believed that the officer might not be mentally stable as he was filmed screaming incoherently while firing shots.

He was also heard alleging that some persons wanted to corrupt him and that he should be allowed to go home in the name of Jesus.

Commenting on the matter, the spokesperson of the state police command, Bala Elkana, said the command was investigating to understand what truly happened.
