The Senate is asking the Federal Government to campaign against rape and abuse of female gender in the country.

This formed part of the resolutions of the lawmakers following a motion raised by Senator Sandy Onoh during plenary on Tuesday in Abuja.

Senator Onoh condemned the rape and murder of 22-year-old Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the Department of Microbiology, University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Omozuwa was reported to have been raped on May 27, inside a church where she went to read at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The suspects were reported to have struck her on the head with a fire extinguisher after raping her.

Senator Onoh also condemned the killing of a teenage girl, Tina Ezekwe, by a policeman in Lagos last week.

According to him, the brutality and rape cases against the girl child are on the rise and Nigerian girls can no longer live their lives with confidence.

In their resolutions, the Senate resolved to call for the arrest of the perpetrators and mandated the security agencies to employ strategies to check the rising cases of rape.

The lawmakers also urged security agencies to ensure the enforcement of the Child Rights Act.

They further asked the State Houses of Assembly to amend the code to make rape a punishable offence.

The upper chamber also observed a minute of silence in honour of the two girls and others who have been victims of rape.

The news of Uwa’s death has sparked outrage on social media and many have demanded justice with the hashtag #JusticeForUwa.

Joe Biden Slams Trump Says “He’s Using Military Against American People”

Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has reacted to President Donald Trump threat of using soldiers to stop the violent protests which erupted across cities in the United States after the death of George Floyd in police custody.

The US President, Donald Trump made the threat in a nationally televised address in the White House Rose Garden. Trump said;

“If a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”

Though the comment was an apparent reference to the 1807 Insurrection Act which allows presidents to quell lawlessness during emergencies, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden condemned the US President’s threat via a tweet he shared.

Joe Biden who announced in a campaign statement that he would speak on Tuesday morning in Philadelphia “on the civil unrest facing communities across America”, accused the US President, Donald Trump of using the American military against the American people.

He’s using the American military against the American people. He tear-gassed peaceful protesters and fired rubber bullets. For a photo. For our children, for the very soul of our country, we must defeat him. But I mean it when I say this: we can only do it together.

The 1807 Insurrection Act was most recently used in 1992 amid rioting in Los Angeles after another African-American man, Rodney King was beaten by police.

Bishop Mariann Budde, the leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington has also expressed her disapproval of Trump’s threat. She tweeted;

Tonight President [sic] just used a Bible and a church of my diocese as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus and everything that our church stands for. To do so, he sanctioned the use of tear gas by police officers in riot gear to clear the church yard.

The President did not come to pray; he did not lament the death of George Floyd or acknowledge the collective agony of people of color in our nation. He did not attempt to heal or bring calm to our troubled land.

The Bible teaches us to love God and our neighbor; that all people are beloved children of God; that we are to do justice and love kindness. The President used our sacred text as a symbol of division.

We are followers of Jesus. In no way do we support the President’s incendiary response to a wounded, grieving nation. We stand with those seeking justice for the death of George Floyd through the sacred act of peaceful protest.

Congressman Adam Smith, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee also said in a statement;

President Trump’s decision to invoke the Insurrection Act, and his inflammatory rhetoric, proves that he cannot lead us through these tumultuous times and unite the country. Instead, he has decided to rely on the use of force to address those who he views as a threat

Having granted bail, Kanu left for his home town Afaraukwu, Abia State. On September 2017, Nigerian soldiers stormed his residence.

Kanu said they came to his residence uninvited and injured occupants in an attempt to take his life. In defense, Police said the Military personnel were only carrying out a procession to test a new armored carrier.

“There was no attack on the home of Nnamdi Kanu,” Abia police commissioner, Leye Oyebade, told Journalists. “What happened was that the military was parading a new armoured carrier and passed through Nnamdi Kanu’s residence.

“It was while they were passing that some people threw stones and other things at them,” Mr Oyebade explained.

But Mr Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, disagreed with the police commissioner, saying there was a siege at Nnamdi Kanu’s residence. In a statement, Mr Ejiofor accused the Buhari administration of attempting to take his client’s life.

“Just to alert the world that the Nigeria military personnel under the command of Chief of Army Staff is presently laying a siege on my client (Nnamdi Kanu) country home in umuahia.

“They had continued to shot sporadically into the air through which assaults, about five of his family members were brutally wounded and some unfortunately killed.

“There is no doubt that the present deployment of troops to the South East is to haunt for my client and possibly eliminate him,” the statement said.

It was at this point that Kanu was declared missing and later was found outside Nigeria. Ever since then, Kanu has been speaking and ministering via Biafra radio station on Facebook.

“This year’s celebration of the epoch event went successfully well across Biafraland without any hindrance. All Biafrans around the globe celebrated this event in their respective countries of abode.

“We equally thank Biafrans of Ijaw (Izon), Annang, Ibibio, Igbo, Urhobo, Isoko, ltsekiri, Efik, Idoma/Igede, Igala, Igbanke (Igbo Akira), Igodomigodo, Esan, Ogoni and others who contributed immensely for the huge success recorded in this year’s exercise.

“Those who participated in this year’s Biafra Remembrance Day with candle processions all across Biafraland and beyond did well, and we pray the Almighty God (Chukwu Okike Abiama) to continue to protect them for what is absolutely coming in future.

“IPOB is totally ready and doing much to ensure that Biafra independence and sovereignty comes in our life time. Every inch of Biafraland observed and participated in the candle processions – the length and breadth of Biafraland, every inch of land, forest and sea where gallants men and women fought and fell to protect our children, relatives and generations unborn.

“In the midnight across our land, people of Biafra lit a beacon to shine lights of hope upon this generation of IPOB. “This 30th of May 2020, our people remembered those who fought for us to live accordingly and we are on the knowledge that their spirit and memories shall continue to abide with us until Biafra freedom is completely achieved.

“IPOB is working the clock round both local and internationally to ensure that those illegally arrested by Fulani terrorists in Nigeria army and police uniforms at Eleme during their candle procession are released without further delay.

NDDC Won’t Be RAPED Under My Watch – Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio, minister of Niger Delta Affairs, says the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under his watch will not be “raped”.

In a statement on Tuesday, Anietie Ekong, media aide to the minister, quoted him saying this while responding to some allegations.

Last week, Peter Nwoboshi, chairman senate committee on Niger Delta, accused the minister of demanding contracts worth N500 million.

The senator said he had deleted the phone number of Akpabio over allegations that he is fuelling the crisis between the NDDC and the national assembly.

But in the statement, the minister wondered on what basis he could have asked the senator for contracts.

“[The] truth is that the letters he was brandishing were addressed to the leadership of the national assembly at the time to make recommendations for zonal intervention projects as requested by the leadership,” he said.

“Is he the managing director of the NDDC? Senator Akpabio never requested NDDC contracts from Senator Peter Nwaboshi as he is claiming.

“He is lying and no one should take him seriously.

“With the present Interim Management Committee led by Prof Kemebradikumo Pondei and the NDDC under the supervision of Senator Godswill Akpabio as minister of Niger Delta affairs, it can no longer be business as usual as the wanton rape of the Niger Delta region must stop.”

The minster asked Nwaboshi to respond to the allegations levelled against him by the interim management committee (IMC) of the NDDC.

“Rather than seek for straws to cling on, Senator Nwaoboshi should address the grievous allegations of the NDDC that he mindlessly wrecked the NDDC budget for his personal benefits, a practice that has been perpetrated over the years and throwing the Commission into near insolvency which the present management is trying to clean up,” he said.

Kemebradikumo Pondei, acting managing director of the commission, had accused federal lawmakers of inserting over 500 non-existent projects in the commission’s budget.
