Obaseki To Pick PDP Membership Card Today

Barring any last-minute changes, Governor Godwin Obaseki will today formally announce his mem­bership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a few days after resigning from his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). ­

A member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) told our correspondent that the governor would reg­ister his membership at his Ward 4 in Oredo LGA of the state after finalising talks with PDP leaders at the national and state levels.

Obaseki, on Wednesday, met with the leadership of the PDP, led by its national chair­man, Prince Uche Secondus, in Abuja, as well as other gov­ernors elected on the party’s platform.

The meeting, which was held at the residence of Gov­ernor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, also had in attendance Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto as well as other gov­ernors of the party.

“Governor Obaseki will pick up his card from his Ward 4, Oredo LGA, in Benin tomorrow (today).

“His return to the APC has been foreclosed due to the lat­est crisis rocking the party.

“The governor is currently meeting with the PDP nation­al chairman as well as other governors elected on the par­ty’s platform in Abuja; they have assured him of total support in his governorship bid,” he said.

President Buhari is unhappy with the current state of the security situation in the country.

Disclosing this to State House Correspondents on Thursday, after a security briefing, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd.), said the President had charged managers of the nation’s security to redouble their efforts.

According to Monguno, the President said, though the security chiefs had been doing their best, their best had not been good enough for the challenges facing the nation.

He has therefore declared that excuses will no longer be tolerated, even as he said he expects everyone to live up to expectations.

He also expressed displeasure over the lack of synergy amongst security forces and charged the various aspects of the security architecture to work together to solve the nation’s security challenges.

He said the President charged the office of the NSA to meet with governors of the Northwest states and that of Niger State, for briefing and strategic organisation of a response to the Banditry problem in their domains.

Prof. Ibe Donates N1.2m To Aba Sports Club, Pledges More Support

The President of Aba Sports Club, Chief Jerry Kalu has expressed gratitude with the support the club has received from educationist and Chancellor Gregory University Uturu, Prof. Gregory Ibe.

ABN TV reports thatChief Kalu who is the 65th President of the club declared this while receiving a delegation from Prof. Gregory Ibe Foundation in his office.

In a release signed by the PAR, Media & Public Relations of Gregory University Uturu, Sleek Ogbonnaya Ogwo, Chief Kalu while describing Prof. Gregory as a serial philanthropist and committed partner of progress, praised the magnanimity of the Chancellor, whom he said: “has maintained an enviable partnership with Aba Sports Club for many years, which has witnessed the donation of many gifts to the club, including a bus”.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Hon. Emeka Okafor commended the leadership of Aba Sports Club for initiating and undertaking the construction of many projects.

In his words, the visionary leadership of the club has resulted in “massive expansion of the club on all sides”.

According to Hon Okafor, the pledge is in aid of the construction of a club tractor house and promised to remit the balance of #2M to ensure completion of the project.

Chief Kalu was joined in receiving the delegation by some executive members of the club management.

Defend Yourselves Against Herdsmen, Ohanaeze Urge Igbo

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has condemned the menace of herdsmen in the southeast, especially with the recent killing of a 65-year-old farmer, Uzoemena Iriaka, in his farm in Umuekpu, Agwa, Oguta Council Area of Imo State.

The farmer was allegedly killed by suspected herdsmen. Ohanaeze Ndigbo, therefore, called on Igbo to defend themselves as the killing was becoming rampant.

Ohanaeze lamented that Ndigbo has been pushed to the wall by the rogue herdsmen who kill the people virtually daily in their homeland. “We have been pushed to the wall. We have no other option than to rise now, gird your loins and face the seemingly intractable insecurity,” the group says.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a statement by Emeka Attama, the media aide to the President General, Chief Nnia Nwodo, and Prince Uche Achi-Ogbaga, the publicity secretary of the Igbo apex body, condemned the killing.

They warned that Ndigbo would no longer watch while their people are being killed like animals in their farms and urged them to rise and protect themselves.

The statement read, “The rampant killing and raping of defenceless people in their homes and farms have made it imperative for people to take all measures possible to defend themselves from these hoodlums.

“Communities should organise themselves and fight back. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government stripped people of their means of self-defence without providing adequate protection for them or ensuring commensurate disarming in the North, especially among herdsmen.

“The Southeast states should expedite action on measures to give their subjects hope of protection from these marauders.

“People, villages and communities, especially Ndigbo, should rise to defend themselves individually and collectively from such marauding criminals more especially as they are said to be non-Nigerians.

“We just cannot continue to allow foreigners, who do not place any premium on the sanctity of human lives, to come into our homes to kill us like rats. Igbo people should stop the complaints forthwith.

“Guard and defend yourselves from senseless massacres. Cordon off your (track) roads to farms, streams and other places to avoid being taken unawares.

Insecurity: President Buhari Meets With Service Chiefs

President Muhammadu Buhari is presently in a meeting with the service chiefs.

The meeting is ongoing at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The service chiefs, led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin, arrived at the seat of power at about 8:50 am and proceeded straight to the Council Chambers.

President Buhari joined the service chiefs about 10 minutes later and the meeting immediately went into a closed session.

Okonjo-Iweala Disqualified From Vying For WTO DG

The African Union has disqualified Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from vying for the office of the Director-General, DG of the World Trade Organisation, WTO SaharaReporters has exclusively gathered.

In July 2019, the Executive Council of the AU invited member states to present nominations into the office of the DG of the WTO so that the AU would agree on a consensus candidature.

Nigeria initially nominated Fedrick Agah while Benin and Egypt fielded Messrs Eloi Laourou and Abdulhameed Mamdouh respectively.

On June 4, 2020, Nigeria withdrew the nomination of Fedrick Agah and replaced him with Okonjo-Iweala.

However, in a document from the Office of the Legal Counsel of the African Union, Reference Number: BC/OLC/24/5056.20 dated June 15, 2020, and sighted by SaharaReporters, the African Union says the nomination of Okonjo-Iweala violates Rule (11), 1, 2 and 3, Rule 12 and Rule 15(3) of the rules of procedure of the committee on candidatures within the International System of the AU as well as Council’s Decisions Ex CI 1072 (XXXV), Ec CI Dec 1090 (XXXVI) and Assembly Dec 795 (XXXIII).

The AU says its Executive Council had endorsed the nominations of Fedrick Agah, Eloi Laourou and Abdulhameed Mamdouh before Nigeria sought to substitute its nomination.

Meanwhile, the council’s endorsement was for the nominees in person and not for their countries.

Court Jails Borno Judiciary Officer 16 Years For Defrauding 194 Widows

Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, on Tuesday, May 16, 2020, sentenced and convicted an ex-Borno State judiciary officer, one Ramat Mohammed (alias Gaddafi), to 16 years imprisonment, on a-two count, amended charge for defrauding 194 widows to the tune of N781, 800.00 (Seven Hundred and Eighty-one Thousand Eight Hundred Naira only).
 
The Maiduguri Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arraigned the convict before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, on two count-charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence and Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud related offences.
 
The convict forged and sold a Food Collection Card, in the name of a non- governmental organisation( NGO), to his victims, 194 widows, to the tune of N781, 800, 000 and failed to deliver food items to them, leading to his arrest and arraignment in court.
 
Count one of the charges read: “That you, Ramat Mohammed (alias Gaddafi), sometime in December 2018 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court with intent to defraud obtained the gross sum of N520,000.00 (Five Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira), only from 40 (Forty) women (mostly widows) of Fissabi-lillah Islamic School, under the false pretence that the entire sum represents payments for registration/eligibility for a programme by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Action Against Hunger (A.A.H) at Auno Town of Konduga L.G.A, Borno State, which payment will entitle the said women to be issued a special card for various food items, which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”
 
After the charge was read to the convict, he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Justice Fadawu sentenced him to eight years imprisonment on count one and another eight years on count two and ordered that the prison terms should run concurrently.
 
Justice Fadawu said, “the court hereby sentenced you to (8) eight years imprisonment on count one. You are hereby sentenced to eight (8) years imprisonment on court two and the years to run concurrently”,
 
“The court orders you Ramat Mohammed (alias Gaddafi) to pay the aggregate sum of N781, 800.00 (Seven Hundred and Eighty-one Thousand Eight Hundred Naira) to 194 (One Hundred and Ninety-Four) women of Fissabi-lillah Islamic School or (9) years in default. The prison term shall run consecutively.”
 
In another development, Justice Fadawu sentenced and convicted one Bashir Mohammed to two years imprisonment, under section 312 of the Penal Code Cap. 102 Laws of Borno State, for criminal breach of trust.
 
Mohammed was convicted on one count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust to the tune of N1, 860,000.00 (One Million Eight Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira only)
 
The convict allegedly received 600 cartons of Spaghetti worth N1, 860,000.00 (One Million, Eight Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira only), allocated to him to sell and remit the proceeds to the complainant, but he dishonestly converted the money for his own use.
 
The count read: “That you, Bashir Mohammed sometime in July, 2019, at Maiduguri, Borno State, within the jurisdiction of his honourable court, being entrusted with certain properties to wit; 600 (six hundred ) cartons of Spaghetti worth N1, 860,000.00 (One Million Eight Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira), by one Garba Babakura Lawan, did dishonestly converts to your own use, the entire sum of N1,860,000.00 (One Million Eight Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira), only being value of the said 600 (six hundred cartons of Spaghetti and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 311 of the Penal Code Cap. 102 Laws of Borno State and Punishable under Section 312 of the same Law”.
 
When the charge was read to him, the convict pleaded guilty to the charge.
 
Prosecution counsel, Benjamin Manji, prayed the court to sentence him as charged.
 
Justice Fadawu sentenced Mohammed to two years imprisonment under section 312 of the Penal Code Cap. 102 Laws of Borno State, for criminal breach of trust and ordered him to pay the sum of N1, 860,000.00 (One Million Eight Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira Only) to the complainant as restitution or serve a term of six years in default, which should run concurrently.

FG, States, LGs Share ₦547bn As Federation Allocation For May

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee on Wednesday at its virtual meeting shared to the three tiers of government a total sum of N 547. 309bn as federation allocation for the month of May 2020.

FAAC’ s virtual meeting was chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mahmoud Isa – Dutse, according to a statement issued by the ministry in Abuja on Wednesday night.

The ministry stated that from this amount, inclusive of Value Added Tax, exchange gain and excess bank charges recovered, the Federal Government received N 219. 799bn; states, N152 .436 bn; Local Government councils N114 .095bn: while the oil-producing states received N 37.021 bn as derivation ( 13 per cent of mineral revenue ).

“ However, the cost of collection/ Federal Inland Revenue Refund /Allocation to North East Development Commission was N 23.958 bn, ” the statement added.

It said a communique issued by the Federation Account Allocation Committee at the end of the meeting indicated that the gross revenue available from the VAT for May 2020 was N 103. 873bn, against N 94.498 bn distributed in the preceding month of April 2020, resulting in an increase of N9 .377bn.

It said the distribution was as follows, Federal Government got N 14.49 bn; states, N 48.301 bn; Local Government councils, N 33.811 bn; while derivation got N 0. 000; and cost of collection/ FIRS refund/allocation to NEDC was N 7. 271bn.

The statement added that the distributed statutory revenue of N 413. 953bn received for the month was higher than the N 370. 411bn received for the previous month by N 43. 542bn.

From this, the Federal government received N 191.58 bn; states, N 97.172 bn; Local Governments, N 74. 915bn; derivation got N 33.599 bn; and cost of collection was N16 .687 bn.

The finance ministry said in the statement that “ the communique also revealed that Petroleum Profit Tax, Import Duty and Value Added Tax recorded increases, while Companies Income Tax, Oil Royalty and Excise Duty recorded decreases .”

It stated that the total revenue distributable for the current month including the cost of collection to Nigeria Customs Service, Department of Petroleum Resources and FIRS, according to the committee was N 547. 309bn.
