IGP Orders Probe Of D’Banj Over Rape Allegation

0

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a probe into the allegations of rape levelled against Music Icon, Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj.

This is contained in a letter with reference number CB.7000/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOl.484/801 signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IG, DCP Idowu Owohunwa.

The letter was addressed to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

The IG’s letter was in response to a petition written to the IG by Mr Tommy Ojoge-Daniel, a lawyer to Miss Seyitan Babatayo, who accused D’Banj of raping her in 2018.

The letter written by the IG is titled, ‘Re: Petition Against (1) Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo (Aka D’Banj) for Rape Indecent Sexual Assault, Attempted Assault on Miss Seyitan Temidayo

The letter read in part, “I forward herewith a copy of the letter dated June 5, 2020, received from Ojoge, Omileye and Partners on the above-underlined subject. I am to respectfully convey the directive of the Inspector-General of Police that you treat.

“Accept the assurances of my esteemed regards please.”

Seyitan’s friend, Benjamin Ese, in a Twitter thread in early June, had told the story of how D’Banj allegedly raped Seyitan at a hotel two years ago – in December 2018.

She said it happened at an all-white party where D’Banj allegedly offered her friend some money to spend the night which she rejected until he surprisingly showed up in Seyitan’s hotel room around 2 in the midnight.

“D’Banj drove all the way from Eko hotel where he was lodged and came down to glee hotel in Victoria Island at midnight 2.40 am and collected the spare key from the receptionist,” Ese said in the thread which has since sparked an outrage.

She said D’Banj allegedly “got into my friend’s room and forcefully threatened he would walk her out of the room naked, kept his fingers in her vagina and repeatedly raped her.”

The rape experience, Ese said had caused Seyitan some trauma since the incident happened.

One month after Ese’s tweets, Seyitan came out publicly to present herself as the lady who was allegedly raped by D’Banj in December 2018.

The musician, however, denied the allegations levelled against him and asked his accuser to make a public apology and also pay him the sum of N100m in damages.

On Tuesday, however, some policemen allegedly acting on the instruction of the Oliver Twist crooner detained Seyitan for over 24 hours and intimidated her, making her delete all chats, social media posts and other vital information from her phone.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media with D’Banj trending on social media for the last two days

D’Banj is one of Nigeria’s biggest artists have won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009, Best International Act: Africa at the 2011 BET Awards, and Best-selling African Artist at the 2014 World Music Awards and the Evolution award at the 2015 MTV Africa Music awards.

Feminists and several rights groups have called on the police to ensure that justice is served regardless of the musician’s status.

Edo 2020: “Godfatherism Must End” — Oba Of Benin

1

Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, oba Ewuare II, oba of Benin, says “godfatherism” and “consensus candidate” must be eradicated from the politics of Edo state.

In a statement on Thursday, the oba said these two “political vices” are antithetical to the fundamental basis of democracy.

Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a governorship aspirant in Edo, is reported to be backed by Adams Oshiomhole, suspended national chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC).

TheCable reported how the coast is now clear for Ize-Iyamu after two aspirants dropped out of the race for the party’s ticket and endorsed him.

The traditional ruler denied reports suggesting that his palace prevailed on some aspirants to step down “for a particular candidate in the upcoming primaries of a certain political party”.

“The palace totally denounces this evil speculation and condemns those that originated it,” the statement read.

“His Royal Majesty, Omo N‘Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpoiokpolo, the Oba of Benin has said times without number that the Palace of the Oba of Benin does not get involved in partisan politics.

“The three prayer points of the Oba of Benin in the democratic process have always been as follows; that God and our ancestors should give us a governor that will accord respect to traditional institutions, develop this state and provide food on the table for the masses.

“The Omo N’Oba strongly advises that in order to eschew recurrent socio-political conflict that seems to constantly ravish the state, making Edo people a laughing stock to the rest of the country in how politicians manage the affairs of Edo people, our Edo political actors must eradicate the twin evil political vices of Godfatherism and CONSENSUS CANDIDATE.

“These two practices seem antithetical to the very fundamental basis of democracy.

In other words, this “Godfatherism” business of coercing aspirants to step down for another candidate for whatsoever reason is undemocratic It will not augur well for the development of the democratic process in Nigeria.”

The oba said the palace is “very wary” of the imposition of candidates whom only certain individuals want, not the majority.

“Ghana Must Go politics should end in the State. Politicians should stop cashing in on the poor masses and exploiting them for their votes,” he said.

“As the various political parties go about the process of selecting their candidates through their respective party primaries, we urge all to exercise the highest standards of maturity and sportsmanship, as the desire to bring about the best for the people of Edo State cannot be compromised nor sacrificed on the altar of intolerance, rumour-mongering and fake news.

“Rumour mongers are reminded that there is an ancestral curse on anyone who attempts to tarnish the image ol the Oba of Benin and the ancient throne of the Benin Kingdom, which will normally be for their selfish ends.”

Malami Writes Buhari, Seeks Removal of Magu Over Diversion Of Funds

2

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), has recommended to President Muhammadu Buhari the sacking of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu.

Malami, in a memorandum to President Buhari, anchored his recommendation on several grounds “raging from diversion of recovered loot to insubordination and misconduct” by Magu, THISDAY has learnt.

Multiple sources told THISDAY yesterday that Malami included a shortlist of three candidates for consideration to replace Magu.

But Magu is fighting back and his supporters within the Presidency say ” removing Magu at this time when he has given muscle to Buhari’s anti-corruption fight would be a mistake.”

“It is painful that the EFCC boss is facing certain powerful forces who have decided to remove him in spite of his remarkable achievements,” sources stated.

But sources said given the weight of Malami’s allegations against Magu, President Buhari may be inclined “to set up a probe panel that will look into the veracity of the allegations and make necessary recommendations.”

One of the sources told select journalists that “I can authoritatively tell you that though Magu has survived previous plots to remove him, the AGF’s legal opinion remains the deadliest plot to get Magu out of the EFCC as AGF’s letter to the president contained 22 weighty allegations that require Buhari’s decision on whether or not to send Magu’s name to the Senate for confirmation or replace him….. This is because the office of the AGF is the supervising ministry of the EFCC and so his legal opinion cannot be treated with levity.

“For example, Malami alleged accounting gaps or discrepancies of figures concerning the recovered assets, claiming that Magu was not transparent enough in the management of recovered assets…”

A Magu supporter said:” It will interest you to note that Malami accused the EFCC boss of disclosing a total naira recovery of N504 billion but lodged N543 billion in the Recovery Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Incidentally, this exceeded the disclosed figures by N39 billion.”

According to the supporter of the EFCC boss, what should be a point of commendation is now being used against Magu.

Others said: “Malami also accused Magu of blatant display of arrogance and insubordination to him as supervising minister of the EFCC.”

According to the source, Malami claimed that most of the recovered assets by the EFCC were allegedly sold by Magu without the knowledge of anyone.

“But it is unfortunate that this claim is at variance with the public auction of assets by the EFCC,“ the source added.

It will be recalled that many efforts have been made in the past to make the president drop Magu, since his appointment as EFCC acting chairman on November 9, 2015.

The plot for his removal twice stalled his confirmation by the Eighth Senate, prompting him to remain the interim head of the nation’s foremost anti-graft agency.

However, when the president insisted on Magu being confirmed, the previous Senate demanded the reversal of a damning security report on the EFCC boss from the Department of State Services (DSS), which it had cited as the reason for his non-confirmation.

Many groups and individuals had also gone to court to challenge the continued stay of Magu as the acting chairman of the commission.

But Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, in a judgment delivered in 2019 over consolidated suits on Magu status, had held that there was no time limit in the law establishing the commission for him to act as the EFCC boss.

The judge further held that Buhari is holding the proverbial “yam and knife” on Magu, adding that the president should do the needful by sending the name of Magu to the Senate for confirmation.

Ajimobi Hasn’t Been Disconnected From Life Support But He’s Gone – Fisayo Soyombo

1

Investigative Journalist, Fisayo Soyombo states in a tweet that former Oyo State Governor: Senator Abiola Ajimobi is “late” according to him, his sources within told him that the governor is on life support and the only reason he hasn’t been pronounced dead is just that the plugs have not been pulled yet.

UPDATE: My source insists the late Governor is gone even though he still hasn’t been disconnected from life support.

I understand that other than placing him on life support, First Cardiology Consultants is “currently not doing anything else” on him.

By the way, many of those tweeting ‘Ajimobi is alive’ have not seen or spoken to him since y/day. His supporters & aides at the hospital do not even have access to him.

The media aide who issued a rebuttal did it only after making phone calls; he himself has no firsthand info.

Nigeria’s Most-Wanted Hacker, Hushpuppi Has Case To Answer — EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said that one of Nigeria’s most-wanted hacker, Ramoni Igbalode, popularly known as Ray Hushpuppi, has considerable cases of cyber crimes against him.

Mr Dele Oyewale, EFCC Spokesperson, said in a statement on Thursday that Igbalode, who was recently arrested by the International Police (Interpol) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has a case to answer.

Oyewale added that the Commission was familiar with grisly details of his money laundering transactions involving many high-profile cybercriminals facing trial in Nigeria.

“The Commission is engaging with the FBI in tracking victims of his fraudulent transactions and other fraudsters having direct involvement with him.

“Local cybercriminals with money laundering networks with him are also being investigated,” he said.

Hushpuppi was arrested on June 10 in United Arab Emirates in connection with $35million ventilator scam.
