The police in Anambra State have arrested a 34-year-old man, Ifeanyi Apulosi, for allegedly killing his two children.

Police spokesperson Haruna Mohammed disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, June 21st, 2020. He said the man went berserk and used a wooden pestle to club the children to death and injuring his 72-year-old father on the head.

“On June 21, 2020, at about 1 a.m., police operatives attached to Ogbunike Police Station arrested one Ifeanyi Apusiobi, ‘m’ aged 34 years, of Azu Ogbunike in Oyi LGA of Anambra State”

“Suspect allegedly ran amok in a circumstances yet to be ascertained and attacked two of his biological children namely Chinecherem Apusiobi ‘Female” Aged 7 years and Obinna Apusiobi ‘Male’ Aged 5 years with a wooden pestle on their heads while they were sleeping”.

“Suspect equally used the same object and injured his father one Dominic Apusiobi, aged 72 years on the head,” Mr Mohammed said.

He said that police detectives rushed victims from the scene to the hospital where the two children were certified dead by a medical doctor while the aged father is responding to treatment.

He said the corpses had been deposited at Isienyi hospital morgue for autopsy.

Mr Mohammed added that the officers recovered the weapon used by the man for the attacks, adding that the case has been transferred to the State CID, Awka, for discreet investigation.

Gov Uzodinma Adopts 9-Year-Old Coconut Seller Whose Singing Video Went Viral

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has announced that he will adopt and sponsor a 9-year-old boy who went viral after a video of him singing Catholic hymns was shared on social media.

Oluomachi Joseph Opara hawks coconut and pear on the street. However, in addition to petty trading, Joseph serenades his customers by singing to them as he sells his goods.

He was filmed singing and the video went viral as Nigerians appreciated his talent.

In celebration of Fathers’ Day, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma announced he will adopt him. He also said he will sponsor his education.

Uzodinma announced this on Twitter, writing: “1/In celebration of #FathersDay, I directed that little 9-year-old Master Joseph Oluomachi Opara, the viral Imo State-born singer be contacted as I announce my intentions to adopt him as my own child.

Senators Earn Luxury Wages While Workers Are Paid Peanuts – Sen Ali Ndume

A former Senate Leader, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army in the 9th National Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume, declared on Sunday that federal lawmakers and other highly placed public officers were earning luxury wages to the detriment of Nigerian masses.

He said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Muhammadu Sanusi, had vindicated his position on the high cost of running a presidential democracy, which he insisted was no longer realistic.

Ndume stated this while reacting to the views expressed by Osinbajo and Sanusi during a webinar organised by the Emmanuel Chapel, themed, ‘Economic stability beyond COVID-19’, on Friday.

Sanusi had on the occasion, pointed out that the governance structure in the country had set it up for bankruptcy, and asked the Vice President what the current regime would do differently to address the perennial problem.

In his response, Osinbajo had said, “There is no question that we are dealing with the large and expensive government, but as you know, given the current constitutional structure, those who would have to vote to reduce (the size of) government, especially to become part-time legislators, are the very legislators themselves.”

Ndume said, “We have a budget of N10tn and only 30 per cent is going to the majority, whereas 70 per cent will be spent on a few minorities. The system we are practising now is not fair either morally or socially.

“In the current system, workers are not being paid living wages, whereas a privileged few are earning luxury wages. The National Assembly members, including me, for instance, are paid luxury wages.

“How can we live comfortably when only a few of us are living a life of luxury while the majority are living in abject poverty? The N30,000 minimum wage is too small; it can make workers engage in corruption in order to survive.”

The senator, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, insisted that the current cost of governance was too much.

Ndume said the change from presidential democracy to parliamentary might be difficult for the current National Assembly to undertake because the present system was also in their favour.

Ndume said, “Parliamentary system is effective in the sense that the head of government is more or less one among equals of the parliamentarians.

“Therefore, accountability is achieved in the chamber in the sense that the prime minister has to be in the parliament every day, and he must give an account of government to his colleagues.

“Also, ministers are selected among the elected parliamentarians. The idea is to reduce the cost of governance and make it more effective.”

On how to effect a change in the current system of government, Ndume suggested that legal luminaries should come together and fashion out an acceptable arrangement that could lead to a constitution amendment through referendum.

APC Importing Thugs Into Edo – Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC of importing thugs into the state ahead of the party’s primary and the September 19 governorship election in the state.

The governor noted that while other political parties conducting primary elections in Edo State have notified the government of their readiness to comply with the state COVID-19 guidelines, the APC was yet to do.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie.

The statement quoted the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie as saying, “The Edo State Government is calling on all political parties holding primary elections to restrict themselves to conduct their activities within the protocols and regulations provided for in the Edo State Coronavirus Quarantine Regulations and the Government’s Gazette on political gatherings during this pandemic.

“These guidelines were issued in fulfilment of government’s statutory duty to ensure the protection of lives and property in the state, in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

“However, we note with concern that all the political parties conducting primary elections in Edo State have notified the government of their readiness to comply with the extant laws and COVID-19 regulations, except the All Progressives Congress.

“The APC appears resolved to carry on with the conduct of their primary election in violation of the Edo State COVID-19 Quarantine Regulations and the State Government’s Gazette on political gatherings in a pandemic.”

“We also have it on good authority that these persons have imported thugs into the state to actualise this illegality, further threatening the peace and security of our dear state.

“In light of this, we want to state unequivocally that the Edo State Government will spare no expense in upholding the law and protecting the lives of our people. We will ensure we identify and prosecute anyone who engages in this illegality and their collaborators, should they proceed with this unlawful conduct.”

Father’s Day: Woman Buys Coffin For Husband As Gift In Anambra

A middle-aged woman in Nanka, in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday, presented a coffin to the husband as father’s day gift.

Our correspondent gathered that the woman had bought the casket about four days ago and kept it with the seller.

It was gathered that after a church service on Sunday, she brought in the coffin in a shuttle bus and presented it to the husband as a gift for the father’s day.

“We were surprised when she came in with the coffin. Nobody could understand her”, a family source told our correspondent.

Another source who begged not to be named said the woman had been showing some abnormal behaviour.
“Nobody paid attention to her problem. She is not normal.

“She has been crying for help, but unfortunately Nigeria and its leaders have not built mental health centres in our hospitals to address these issues.

“A check on the woman will indicate that she must have exhibited some traits in the past.

The source added,” The case is like the man who killed his two children today (Sunday). They all have mental health issues and are crying for help.

Declare Me Deputy National Secretary Of APC, Former Contestant Demands

A contestant for the position of APC deputy national secretary in the 2018 national convention, Frank Ossai has asked the party to declare him the occupant of the position.

According to him, this is following the existing vacant position of the deputy national secretary of the party.

Ossai in a statement on Monday said, “Following the latest development of the NWC vacant position of the Deputy National Secretary, a position I contested for in the last 2018 APC National Convention. The Convention Election Appeal upheld my petition and request that NWC as a matter of urgency call me for settlement.

“It is only fair that now that the position is vacant that I should be allowed to step in.”

He further said, “According to Article 13 of APC constitution 2014 as amended and Section 141 of the Electoral Act as amended 2015

“For instance is the position of the National Secretary which become vacant, the party in its wisdom fill in Arc. Bulama Waziri who is a product of the convention.

“The Statutes and Precedents should be followed as it will be unmerited and unjust for members of the Party who did not at any point contest for any office in an election to fill the vacant position.

“Permitting this is not only alien but also an act of Party injustice”.

Buhari Snubs Magu, Gets Senate Confirmation For 207 Appointees

The President, Muhammadu Buhari, has been able to get the 9th Senate to confirm at least 207 appointees for him in the last year of the existence of the current Senate, Sunday PUNCH reports.

The 207 already confirmed include judges, ministers, ambassadors, commissioners and heads of agencies.

However, Buhari has not considered the re-appointment of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Magu was appointed by the President on November 9, 2015 subject to confirmation by the Senate. But he has remained in acting capacity since then.

He was rejected twice by the 8th Senate, under the leadership of Dr Bukola Saraki, based on a security report by the Department of State Services. He, however, remained in office.

Saraki’s tenure as Senate President was characterised by a frosty relationship between the Presidency and the National Assembly.

However, since the inauguration of the 9th Senate led by Ahmad Lawan on June 11, 2019, Buhari has sent the names of 200 individuals to the upper chamber for confirmation but has not sent that of Magu.

This is despite assurances by Lawan that the Senate would act swiftly if Magu’s name is forwarded to the Senate for approval.

When the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption, Itse Sagay, paid him a visit at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on November 21, 2019, Lawan said there was no request before the 9th Senate for the confirmation of Magu.

Magu is expected to retire from the police force in the next 23 months when he would have turned 60.

The 9th Senate, which prides itself on friendly towards the executive, has rejected the confirmation of only one of Buhari’s nominees in the last one year and she was rejected because of her refusal to show up for the screening.

In July 2019, Buhari wrote the Senate seeking the confirmation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad, which was swiftly granted.

Two weeks later, the President nominated 43 persons to be confirmed by the Senate as ministers. They were all confirmed within a week with many of them being asked to “take a bow and go”.

In September 2019, the upper chamber received a request for Adeleke Adewolu to be confirmed as an Executive Commissioner of the Nigerian Communications Commission to replace Sunday Dare, who had resigned to take up a ministerial appointment. The request was granted.

The following month, Buhari sought the confirmation of 16 nominees for the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission. They were all confirmed, except Joy Nunieh of Rivers State for failing to appear for screening. Those confirmed have, however, not been inaugurated to date.

In November 2019, the Senate confirmed the nomination of Justice John Tsoho as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, based on the President’s request.

For December 2019, the Senate approved 13 nominees as chairman and commissioners of the National Assembly Service Commission. The nominees were inaugurated by the President.

In the same month, Buhari got the Senate to approve 18 nominees for the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, with Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan as chairman.

In December 2019 as well, the President asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of Muhammad Nami as chairman and 11 others as members of the board of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, while Edward Adamu was confirmed the Chairman, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.

In January 2020, Buhari sought the confirmation of the appointment of Kingsley Obiora as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as Musa Nuhu as the substantive Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority

The President also sought the confirmation of the appointment of Adeolu Akande as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the NCC and Uche Onwude as a member (South East) of the board.

All the nominations of January were endorsed by the upper chamber.

In April 2020, Buhari wrote the Senate for the confirmation of 38 persons to the board of the Federal Character Commission with Muheeda Dankaka as chairman. On the same day, he forwarded seven nominees for the membership of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

For the month of May 2020, he sought the Senate’s approval for the confirmation of 42 ambassadors, which was granted.

In June, the Senate approved the President’s request to confirm Lamido Yuguda as the Director-General of the apex capital market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Three others were also confirmed as SEC commissioners.

In June 2020, the Nigerian Senate confirmed the appointment of two non-executive directors for the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation and three members of the Board of Nigerian Law Reform Commission.

In the same month, the Senate confirmed Monica Dongbam-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal.

Also in June 2020, Buhari wrote the Senate for the endorsement of Prof Umar Danbatta as Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC.

We can not forget the galvanizing force of both men in making sure that the APC in Abia gains it’s dreamed height and it is on record that such strategies are yielding the positive results which all and sundry can testify.

Of course, Political Marauders and detractors must always play their part of unfruitful show of shame but those that put their trust in God are like Mountain Zion. The Kalus are men with God’s grace and no human being can defame them. The grace and unction of the Holy Spirit they have will always Disgrace the political Marauders.

What else can I say except, the great Pillars continue doing good? The hand of God is always upon you. I pray that God will replenish you people in a million fold.
