Obaseki Allegedly Offered PDP N6 Billion For Ticket – ThisDay

0

Each passing day, the Edo State political scenario is becoming increasingly fluid and no longer predictable. But there are some undercurrents that may suggest that head or tail – the situation is not a generally pleasant one for Governor Godwin Obaseki.

First, is the fact that the certificate scandal is a major albatross for Obaseki and one that is going to go around with him for a long time, regardless of his joining the PDP.

Report of the APC Appeal Committee is quite damaging and a booby trap that would snap anytime.

Then, there’re talks about the demands of his PDP.

Reports reaching THISDAY claimed it took the governor days negotiating some of the terms put on the table, which were generally obnoxious. We hear N10 billion demand was made by the umbrella, while N6 billion was offered. True or false, money is definitely going to change hands.

This is aside from the fact that he was said to have first played a rather difficult ball with a prominent member of the party, who brokered the deal as some form of demands for consulting and ‘smoothening the way’ for him.

These are definitely the indications of what would be at the end of the day. Now that Obaseki has finally moved into the party. Is it, therefore, right to say the governor has moved from fry pan to the real fire? Only time will tell, after all, he is now a PDP governor.

Thomas Obi Tawo, aka General Iron, has been accused of burning locals to force them to confess after he had a dream that they fought him.

Obi Tawo is the Special Adviser on Forestry Security to Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade.

According to Journalist Agba Jalingo, Tawo tortured locals and went as far as burning parts of their bodies with fire to force a confession out of them based on a dream he had.

Buhari, APC Governors Meet Over Party Crisis

0

President Muhammadu Buhari and some governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are in a meeting over the leadership crisis rocking the ruling party.

The meeting with Buhari is being held at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Atiku Bagudu, Kebbi governor and chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum; Simon Lalong, Plateau governor and chairman of the northern governors forum; and Abubakar Badaru are some of those at the meeting.

The party has been engulfed in a leadership crisis following the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the APC national chairman.

The court of appeal had upheld a decision of a lower court that ordered the suspension of Oshiomhole.

The court gave the order on the basis that Oshiomhole had been suspended by the APC in his ward since last year.

The suspension is a fall out from a disagreement he had with Godwin Obaseki, Edo governor.

While Abiola Ajimobi, former Oyo governor, was named as the acting chairman, Victor Giadom has since said he is in charge of the party.

Later, Hilliard Eta, APC vice-chairman south-south, was named by some members of the national working committee (NWC) to act on behalf of Ajimobi who has been “unavoidably absent”.

ECOWAS Endorses Okonjo-Iweala For WTO Job

1

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has endorsed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

This is contained in a document signed by Mahamadou Issoufou, ECOWAS president, and seen by TheCable on Friday.

On June 4, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the nomination of Okonjo-Iweala, former coordinating minister for the economy, for the top WTO job.

ECOWAS called on other African countries to back Okonjo-Iweala, who Issoufou referred to as a “fearless reformer”.

The nomination has been commended by top officials including Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Liberian president.

Issoufou said ECOWAS heads of state and government acknowledged the nomination of Okonjo-Iweala as Nigeria’s candidate.

He said the ECOWAS leadership considered among others, Okonjo-Iweala’s “established reputation as a fearless reformer, her excellent negotiating and political skills, her experience of over 30 years”.

The regional organisation declared its support for the Nigerian candidate, thereby urging other African and non-African countries to do the same.

“The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, takes note of the communication by the Chairman of the General Council of the World Trade Organization (WTO) announcing the commencement of a process for the appointment of a new Director-General of VVTO, with the opening and closing dates of nominations set as 8 June and 8 July 2020 respectively,” the statement read.

“Takes into account that since the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 1 January 1995. which is a successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) established on 1 January 1948, no African has assumed the position of Director-General of the Organization,

“Further notes that the Federal Republic of Nigeria has formally nominated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-lweala for the position of Director-General of WTO for the period 2021 — 2025:

“Having acknowledged the strong academic and professional background of Dr. Okonjo-lweala and her very large experience in national affairs as Nigeria’s Finance Minister (2003-2006 and 2011-2015) and Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister briefly in 2006;

“Having further acknowledged her long years of managerial experience at the top echelons of multilateral institutions, her established reputation as a fearless reformer, her excellent negotiating and political skills, her experience of over 30 years as a Development Economist with a long standing interest in trade, her excellent academic qualifications, her positions as Managing Director World Bank, and currently as Board Chair Gavi, and African Union Special Envoy to Mobilize Financial Resources for the fight against Covid19,

“Endorses the candidature of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-lweala for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization for the period 2021-2025; and

“Calls on other African countries as well as non-African countries to endorse her candidature.”

The Republic of Benin had earlier withdrawn its candidate from the race and pledged support for Okonjo-Iweala.

The nomination of Okonjo-Iweala had triggered slight controversy.

The office of the legal counsel of the African Union (AU) had said that the candidature of Okonjo-Iweala for the position violates the rules of the AU.

However, the Nigerian embassy and permanent mission to the African Union (AU) responded saying claims that Okonjo-Iweala’s nomination contravenes laid-down rules are unguarded and failed all parameters of objectivity and unbiased submission.

Meanwhile, the WTO had confirmed that Okonjo-Iweala is eligible to run for the office of director-general.

Ikuku, T. Orji’s Visits to Kalu: A New Dawn for Abia – Anyalekwa, Igbere TV Boss

2

The recent but separate peacemaking visits to Senate Chief Whip and former Governor of Abia, Senator (Dr.) Orji Uzor Kalu, MON by his successor Sen. Theodore Orji and son, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji (Ikuku), the current speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, is the beginning of a new dawn for our dear ‘God’s Own State’ of Abia.

Without peace, there won’t be any meaningful development in Abia. Just like a house divided against itself cannot stand.

The visit is special in design and reconciliatory in the outcome. In design, the relationship between T. A. Orji and Orji Uzor Kalu became frosty, ahead of the 2nd term drive of T. Orji. This is the first visit since the year 2010 due to their perceived political differences. In understanding the reconciliatory attitude of these political stalwarts, an analysis of the visit within the framework of the Speaker’s remarks is necessary. First is the adoption of Chief Orji Uzor Kalu by the Speaker as the overall political Leader in Abia State. The adoption is significant in implication: It once and for all shows the courage, doggedness and perseverance of Orji Uzor Kalu in the face of many political battles to come out strong and lead his people and all indigenes of Abia to the Promised Land. It also demonstrates the political maturity and sagacity of Chinedum Orji which partly explains his unusual and meteoric rise to the number three position in the state within less than 5 years into active politics.

Ikuku, as the speaker is fondly called by many of his admirers, by my estimation, is the most misunderstood young politician in Nigeria. From afar, many perceive him as brutish, haughty, arrogant and uncooperative but when you come close, you surprisingly meet a young man full of love, compassion, intelligence, humility, visionary and, above all, progressive minded.

This declaration by the Speaker has further vindicated my position when I tagged the visits as “political maturity in maximum display”. Speaker Orji, who was accompanied on the visit by two of his uncles: Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, a former Abia Deputy Chief of Staff; Chief Godfrey Onyemobi, Abia State Chairman, Elders Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC); amongst others, said irrespective of Sen. Kalu’s political platform, it was only proper that the Senator assumed his rightful position as father of all in the state. This is a right step in the right direction and a victory for the people of Abia State and Ndigbo in general.

Despite daunting distractions, this union is poised to focus on the vision and mission of transforming Abia State. As much as there are many political benefits that will accrue to the people of Abia; there are other socio-economic benefits that this reconciliation will bring. Abia State will definitely be transformed into a functional private sector-led economy; creating opportunities for citizens, improving the quality of lives and shaping the state as a regional entrepreneurship hub through good governance, appropriate development and provision of a sustainable and enabling environment. It is noteworthy that throughout history, visionaries and achievers are not daunted by distractions.

These political leaders have been disciplined through experience and fortitudes of office, and will therefore do everything possible to restore Abia to its pride place, give the people a sense of belonging, so that they can once more be proud as Abians. It is common knowledge that Abians have great expectations from their political leaders but with this united approach; the future looks bright and colourful.

Both in private and public, I have been a passionate advocate for true reconciliation between the two former governors (Senators Orji Kalu and T. Orji) because of my deep conviction that resounding peace between the two most influential leaders in Abia, who are now both key members of the Senate, will undoubtedly usher in a period of unprecedented prosperity in the state. Indeed, it is a new dawn for Abia, Southeast region and Nigeria at large.

To the eternal chagrin of the obviously malicious opponents of the political, socio-economic and all-round progress of Abia; this reconciliatory move will give Abia a place and a voice that will keep speaking goodwill and prosperity for years to come.
Abia is now set to take its place as one of the leading lights in view of the national and sub-regional interests that had tried to place the State at the backwaters. The clarion call is for Abians to know that we truly have formidable political leaders and we must work with them in order to create a posterity that our children’s children will live to celebrate.

Again, this is the time for political actors in the state, who had sadly been fueling the decade old crisis, to have a rethink and give peace a chance. The importance of the role of political actors in the state to sustain this peace can not be overemphasized. The two senators and former governors, must also imbibe Christ’s teachings of forgiveness as true Christians, and continue to work harmoniously both in and out of the Senate in the interest of the state and the Igbo nation.

Gregory University, Uturu: Adding Value In Eradicating The COVID-19 Pandemic

6

Gregory University, Uturu, a foremost private tertiary institution of learning in the country has gone ahead to profusely show the link between the Town and the Gown in its activities.

Presently, the COVID-19 pandemic experienced in the world has had rampant adverse effects within the human society. A greater percentage of the Nigerian populace has been confined within their homes and this is in a bid to curtail the motility of the virus. With the attendant stay-at-home order of government at various levels and the present reality of our socioeconomic outlook as a burgeoning economy, income streams of our people are inadvertently affected.

One could go on severally about the negative impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic but a lot of actions around the world from determined individuals and groups are currently ongoing to mitigate and roundly eradicate the coronavirus which has caused a lot of damage to the fabric of human society.

The Gregory University, Uturu, in holding up its mantra of Knowledge for Tomorrow right from the onset of the pandemic had begun the production and the attendant distribution of globally prescribed alcohol-based hand sanitizers. These hand sanitizers are currently prevalent within the Uturu university community and different parts of Abia and Imo States.

The university through their biosciences and pharmaceutical setup has produced several natural curative drugs – Sniff Sniff, Adonis Yellow, etc – which are currently being analyzed by the nation’s food and drug regulatory body, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Following the conclusion of the analysis, clinical trials of the drugs would ensue and would eventually be available in the mass market as another line of cure, protection, and defence against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In its avowed determination to always stand out as a technologically driven institution, there is a new invention by the Gregory University, Uturu, currently being deployed by the institution at its gates. It is the Gregory Human Sanitization Chamber. This sanitization chamber serves to offer an increased layer of defence from the COVID-19 pandemic. Every individual expecting to access the grounds of the university would have to proceed via the chamber and for a number of seconds get decontaminated before being allowed entry into the hallowed environment of Gregory University.

Other technological advancements made by the university include the Fuel-less energy-generating set which is currently in use in different parts of the university to provide electricity and a foot pedal energized hand washing and sanitizing equipment which further aids the personal cleansing of individuals upon entry within the university environment.

These advancements in protecting and propelling the living standards of people which are being powered by Gregory University, Uturu are undoubtedly being driven by the indefatigable spirit of the Founder and Chancellor of the University, Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe; a man given to incremental all-round development of humanity and a strong proponent of technological pursuits in ameliorating stagnating conditions.

North Will Not Cede Power To South In 2023 — Arewa Youth Consultative Forum

1

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, has reiterated that the North still wanted the presidency in 2023 and would not cede power to the South.

President of the AYCF, Shettima Yerima, said in an interview on Tuesday that it irritates the entire North for some southern politicians to think Northerners will leave power for them in 2023.

“How can you think we will cede power to the South in 2023? The North still want the presidency. The south is in charge of the economy and they have everything, so why would they want to take away the only thing we have.

“What would you call that? Even if we are ceding power to the south in 2023, we should be considering people like Orji Uzor Kalu. He is someone the north trusts and the Northern elders will give him their full support. Most Nigerians don’t know that Kalu’s incarceration emanated from conspiracy and betrayal from his own party, the APC,” he said.

Yerima accused Ohanaeze and some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, of conspiracy during the travails of Senator Kalu Orji Kalu and thanked the Northern elders for standing behind the former Governor of Abia state and Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu during his six months incarceration at Kuje custodial centre.

He accused the leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC) from the south of conspiring against Kalu because of 2023 presidential ambitions.

He also slammed the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo and its leadership for keeping silent during the entire period of Kalu’s travails

He cautioned the North over the dangers of abandoning the former Governor in custody, adding that Northern elders must be commended for “standing firm for Kalu” who he referred to as their “long time ally, brother and friend.”

“We specifically thank Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, for proving critics wrong on the North’s stand on Kalu,” he said.

Yerima also thanked the Supreme Court and Justice Muhammad Liman of the Federal High Court for standing on the path of justice.

“It is very important to appreciate the justices of the Supreme Court and Justice Liman of the Federal High Court for their moral and professional courage to uphold justice. Kalu’s release is a victory for decency, for patriotism and respect for the rule of law. They once again proved that Judiciary is the survival of democracy”.

“However, we question the usefulness of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to Igbo elite. It is a disappointment that Ohanaeze under the leadership of Nwodo specifically did nothing to support their own, yet they want a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction.”

“Please where will this president come from? Kalu is one of their biggest assets but they all kept quiet. It’s only the Ohanaeze youths that spoke strongly for Kalu but Nwodo and his members shied away from the real leadership they ought to render. Who knows if they were also paid to betray their own? It’s very shameful of them”.

“It irritates the entire North for some southern politicians to think they will leave power for them (South) come 2023. How can you think we will cede power to the South in 2023?” He queried the journalists. “The North still wants the presidency. The south is in charge of the economy and they have everything, so why would they want to take away the only thing we have.”

“Some leaders of the party from the south who have become desperate about 2023 presidency wanted to kick Kalu out of the race through the Machiavellian way. They don’t like open competition. I was surprised they have no love. They are full of hatred and they want to be President. The amount of hatred in that party is so much. What’s exactly Kalu’s offence? 2023? Look at what is also happening in Edo state. It’s a pity”

“I remember when Kalu as a governor initiated the idea of publishing the state accounts on the print media. That showed a lot. I think the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, should have a rethink on Kalu’s case. The resources they have wasted on pursuing the case for the past 13 years. Is it worth it?

“My advice is that they should sheathe their swords and let Kalu be. They should not allow some desperate politicians to dictate to them what they should do,” he said.
