A chieftain of APC in Delta state, Mr. Frank Ossai has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for recognising the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Mr Victor Giadom as the Acting National Chairman of APC.

Ossai who contested for the position deputy national secretary of the party in 2018 convention in a chat with ABN TV on Wednesday said the constitution of the party allows the second-ranking officer from the same geopolitical zone with the national chairman in case of his/her absence.

While describing Giadom’s recognition as a step in the right direction, Ossai observed that non-adherence to the constitution of the party is responsible for the leadership crisis it currently faces.

He called on members of the party to go back to its constitution, adding that it empowers any member of the National Working Committee to occupy an office which according to him is why the court granted an order permitting Giadom to retain his office as the national secretary and acting National Chairman.

Ossai said by this new development, only Mr Victor Giadom can call for the National Executive Council Meeting of the party.

He noted that time for all members to come together in unison to rebuild the party is now that fresh air of sanity and Rule of Law has been restored.

A 3-storey building located at no 88 Nkwere Street by Umuchu, Umuahia, Abia State has collapsed, ABN TV reports.

Collapse of the building came 20 minutes after authorities of Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) got it sealed Wednesday evening.

The sealing of the structure is not unconnected with the multiple cracks it was manifesting before its final collapse.

EFCC has been a cesspit of corruption in Nigeria from day 1. That it took so long before Nigerians could speak publicly about that is the biggest shock. Successive leaders of the EFCC now allegedly robbed the country blind.

Buhari did not create EFCC and most of the alleged EFCC-led theft occurred before Buhari came to power. But Buhari administration seems to have compounded the problem by having in office for 5 years a man whom the Nigerian Senate refused to confirm his appointment as Chairman.

The Acting Chairman Magu is a constitutional aberration. Some progressive Senators are not comfortable with this aberration. They are wondering why the situation will remain.

Nigerians expect that the Senate which three times rejected Magu’s confirmation will not sit back idly and watch as the will of the Nigerian people, through their elected representatives, is undermined in such a continuing brazen manner.

The current move by the Attorney General of the Federation to get Magu removed is a fresh impetus for all stakeholders in this administration to act decisively to ensure compliance with the intendment of the Constitution as far as the leadership of the EFCC is concerned.

A veteran Nollywood actress, Bose Adewoyin, is dead. This thespian passed on Tuesday morning. She was buried at about 4 p.m. the same day.

Late Adewoyin is famous for her role as Madam Tinubu in ‘EFUNROYE TINUBU’, written by Professor Akinwumi Isola and directed by Gbenga Adewusi in 1989.

EFUNROYE TINUBU was later adapted for television and was a screen hit all through 1989/1990.

The play toured Nigeria before finally being staged in the USA in 1986.

Aunty Bose, as she was fondly called, was a quintessential actress, dancer and costumier. She was on the contingent of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture that performed Funmi Odusolu’s famous dance musical, ‘ORÍ’ (Destiny).

Madam Tinubu would later costume many plays for stage and screen while she also acted along. She acted alongside Oga Bello (Adebayo Salami) in Funke Akindele’s ‘ỌMỌ GHETTO’.

A staffer of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, she participated in many editions of the National Festival of Arts and Culture, NAFEST.

Bose Adewoyin, now dead, also took part in many of the council’s plays and dance productions.

The Kogi State House of Assembly has lost one of its members, John Abah.

He was a lawmaker representing Ibaji Constituency in the 8th assembly, where he was serving as a second term.

Demi Olugbemi, the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, Mathew Kolawole, confirmed the death to The PUNCH.

Abah was said to have died early hours of Wednesday.

He was not known to have suffered any ailment prior to his death.

Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Matthew Kolawole, described the death of Abah as shocking.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Femi Olugbemi, the Speaker expressed sadness over the death.

He sympathised with the immediate family and the people of Ibaji Constituency, noting that the deceased would be greatly missed.

He said,”It is very sad and painful to lose a breadwinner of a family”, stressing that his demise has created “a great vacuum that will be hard to fill”.

He noted that “death is an expected end of every mortal, hence, he enjoined his family to “take solace in the words of God which say everything under the sun has time, a time to be born, and time to die”.

FG Submits School Reopening Proposal To National Assembly

The Federal Ministry of Education has presented to the National Assembly a detailed proposal on its plan to reopen schools across the country.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, stated this on Tuesday when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education.

He was in the upper chamber to brief the federal lawmakers about his ministry’s plans for pupils who had been forced to stay at home following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nwajiuba refused to give details of the proposal, saying some people would misconstrue it as the ministry’s guidelines for schools reopening.

He said, “Children are asymptomatic carriers. Nobody can prove whether they can infect each other. Not even health experts. Everything we know about it is what we read. There is nothing we discovered on our own.

“In the document, we have provided, we have suggested how we can move our education sector forward in this pandemic period.

“We don’t want to make it (proposal) known at this period so that some people will not take our proposal for the guidelines for schools reopening.

“The documents were presented to you so that you can criticise and make inputs as major stakeholders”

The Minister, however, expressed concern over the decision of the Oyo State Government to reopen its primary and secondary schools despite the current rising cases of coronavirus infection in the state.

He said, “Why is Oyo State talking of reopening schools when it has just started recording an increase in cases of coronavirus infection?

“Just beside Oyo is Ogun State which was part of the three states under the FG’s lockdown since April and it’s not talking about schools reopening.

“As we speak, Kogi and Cross River states are not on the same page with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on the issue of testing while all their neighbouring states are conducting tests.”

The vice-chairman of the panel, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, who presided over the meeting, expressed the fears that the academic calendar could be distorted in public schools where no visible arrangement was being made to teach the children at home unlike their counterparts in private schools.

A Facebook user has taken to the platform to draw attention to the plight of a Nigerian woman who recently lost the child she gave birth to after being gang-raped in Ghana.

Bright Sylvanus claims the woman from Imo State was stranded in a hospital in Ghana because she couldn’t pay her hospital bills after her child died in the hospital two weeks after being born via C-section.

He claimed that the woman moved to Ghana in search of a job. While there, she was allegedly gang-raped and it resulted in a pregnancy.

While pregnant, she was allegedly gang-raped again.

She gave birth on May 31 via cesarean section and the baby died on June 15. The woman was allegedly stranded in Ridge hospital, Accra, because she could not afford to pay the hospital bills.

She also couldn’t bury her dead child because of the money she owed to the hospital.

We live in a very wicked world. so yesterday someone sent me a voice note concerning this lady in Ghana she’s from imo state..she came to Ghana to look for  a job so she can feed home.. and some group of Ghana boys raped her and got her pregnant even when she was pregnant another set of people raped her again then someone took her to the hospital and left her there for more than three weeks. No friend no family  so on the 31st of last month she  had to deliver through operation and the baby died On the 15th of this month. when I got this picture and voice note guys, I left everything I was doing I couldn’t even take my bath when I got to the hospital @ridge hospital Accra she was crying that  they said she can’t bury  her baby till she pay 1200 cidis thats ( 98k) naira so this lady have  been at the hospital helplessly.. people are wicked guys. I managed to clear up the bills so the baby can be buried then the lady can go home. Please let  the appropriate authorities attend to this issue #SayNoToRape

A dog is on the brink of death after it was allegedly shot by a policeman for refusing to allow them into a home in Akure.

According to eyewitnesses, the police officers “invaded” no. 6, Samson Ogunleye street, Omi Agagu, Olufoam Area in Akure, at about 7 am today, June 24.

The dogs guarding the compound refused to let them in, so an officer allegedly opened fire on one of the dogs.

The dog is now in critical condition. In photos shared online, the dog is seen bleeding profusely with its organs hanging outside its body.

The police have reacted on Twitter by stating that an investigation has been initiated.

 

“Your complaint is hereby acknowledged and investigation has been initiated. Your tracking number is #CRU200696 Thank you for contacting NPF-CRU. Cc:@i_am_jay_bee,” the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Police tweeted.

“Police Can’t Be Everywhere At The Same Time” – IGP

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu on Monday said the Police can’t be everywhere, at the same time.

Adamu stated this in Gombe during the state inauguration of the Community Policing Advisory Committee, which will be co-chaired by the Emir of Gombe, Sheu Abubakar, and the state Police Commissioner, Maikudi Sheu.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, in charge of Zone 3, Haliru Gwandu, said there was no better time than now for community policing to commence.

He said, “I consider this timely and very crucial. The Nigeria Police Force has continued to emphasise that while the police cannot be everywhere, our communities are found everywhere. Consequently, safety and security will be better guaranteed when and where members of the communities are actively involved in crime prevention and community safety.

“Since the formal introduction of community policing approach in 2004, NPF has made community policing the cardinal focus of efficient service delivery.”

He added that the emerging crime trend warranted the community policing strategy which, according to him, is citizen-centred.

On his part, Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, said security is highly imperative noting that without it, anarchy will set in.

“The provision of security is the number one priority of each government because when there is security, you can guarantee that lives will be protected and businesses will be sustained. We remain focused as far as security is concerned,” Yahaya said.
