Abia APC’s Strength Surges As Former LP Chieftain, Nzechi Joins Party

0

Candidate of the Labour Party, LP for Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency seat in the 2019 election, Chief Charles Nzechi has joined the All Progressives Congress.

This comes few months after leaving his former party the Labour Party, LP, without disclosing his next political move.

He documented his membership at his Isingwu ward in Umuahia North local government area of Abia state.

It is not, however, clear if he will throw his hat into the race to vie for any elective political position in the state as 2023 approaches.

His defection to APC was formalised at a ceremony held at the home of one of the ward leaders of APC in Isingwu, Chibuike Ude Agomuo of Amafor Ihungwu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state.

The APC ward leader and other officials were in attendance, together with some party loyalists and Nzechi supporters.

Though he was not physically present at the event owing to the COVID-19 global lockdown which prevented international flights from operating, his representatives said he would return when the situation relaxes to register at the LGA level.

It was gathered that the party supporters that witnessed his joining APC were entertained and given their transport money.

The APC in Abia state is witnessing influx of politicians to the party in recent times, especially with the release of senator Orji Uzor Kalu from prison.

Chief Henry Ikoh, a PDP chieftain and the former commissioner has joined APC, likewise Dr Alex Otti who is highly speculated to be on his way to APC.

He was rumoured to be preparing to declare at the house of APC Board of Trustees member, Prince BB APugo before the COVID-19 lockdown disrupted the plan. Also, prominent APGA members in the state have equally joined the party ahead of 2023 General Election.

Tinubu Unhappy Over Governors Takeover Of APC

1

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is unhappy over latest developments in the party which has seen him losing grip of the structures.

Governors elected on the party’s platform on Thursday took over control of the party following the dissolution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The decision to dissolve the APC NWC which was badly factionalised was taken after the recommendation of President Muhammadu Buhari, who by virtue of his position is the leader of the party.

Despite opposition from the late Abiola Ajimobi-led APC NWC that the meeting is illegal, the president, vice president, governors and other party leaders attended the meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Even though Tinubu, it was gathered, opposed the convening of the NEC meeting, many of his loyalists, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, among others, were in attendance.

It is also speculated that the latest development may have put paid to his presidential ambition in 2023, even though Tinubu has not confirmed whether he is running.

Speaking with Daily Independent, a credible source in the party, who attended the NEC meeting, said President Buhari and other leaders decided to convene the NEC meeting following the illegality being perpetrated by the Ajimobi-led exco represented by Hilliard Eta.

He also said the president and other concerned stakeholders who are worried about the multiple crises and litigations decided to wade in and restore normalcy before the situation gets out of hand.

Aside from the multiple crises and court cases, the president was apparently miffed by the illegal tactics being used by the Ajimobi-led exco.

They knew Ajimobi was in a coma with a very minimal chances of survival but Hilliard Eta who apparently is taking instructions from some quarters was issuing statements in his name.

“Many of us who love this party and know the real situation on the ground had to inform the president of the need to urgently address this issue and that was why the NEC meeting was approved”.

Following the dissolution of the APC NWC, the NEC also appointed a caretaker committee headed by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State. He was immediately sworn in by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Other members of the Caretaker Committee and Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee are Isiaka Oyebola (South-West), Ken Nnamani, a former Senate President (South East), Stella Okorete – Women rep; Governor Sani Bello of Niger State (North-Central) and Dr. James Lalu, physically challenged.

Others are Sen. Abubakar Yusuf, Senate rep; Hon. Akinyemi Olaide – Reps, David Leon (South South), Abba Ari (North West), Prof. Tahir Mamman (North East), Ismail Ahmed – Youth and Sen. Akpan Udoedehe as the secretary of the committee.

The Chairman of the Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha yesterday said considering the increasing cases of confirmed COVID-19 in the country, it won’t be out of place to lock down Nigeria the second time.

Declaring this during the COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, Mustapha lamented that the way and manner Nigerians are romancing with the virus shows there is danger ahead.

“This is the time to lock down if it were within my power, this is the time to lock down because I can see the attitude of people romancing with COVID-19.

“The daily increase in confirmed cases, the federal government feels a sense of frustration because we can see glaring the danger ahead and you can see the level of recklessness on the part of people who should know better.”

FG Stops Purchase Of Vehicles

0

Federal Government has stopped what it called non-critical and administrative capital spending, including the purchase of vehicles.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a document tagged, “What you need to know about the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan” made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

The plan was developed by the Economic Sustainability Committee chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and established by the President, Muhammadu Buhari, earlier in March.

It was designed to support the nation’s economy in the face of the disruptions and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adesina listed eight key interventions as stated in the plan to include mass agricultural programme, infrastructure, informal sector support, business support for MSMEs, technology, expansion of National Social Investment Programmes, cut non-essential spending and support for state governments.

As part of ways to cut non-essential spending, Adesina said only ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles and other essentials are exempted from the ban on the purchase of vehicles.

He said, “The President has approved the implementation of the report on the rationalisation of government agencies.
“The NESP will also target a reduction in average production costs of crude oil.

“Also, the Integrated Personnel and Payment Information System will be expanded to cover all Federal Government’s MDAs.

“Non-critical and administrative capital spending will be eliminated, including the purchase of vehicles (except for ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles and other essentials).”

He added that the Economic Sustainability Committee would monitor the implementation of the plan while the Vice President will regularly brief the President on progress made.
