No Evidence That ‘Air Doctor’ Prevents COVID-19, NCDC Warns Nigerians

0

National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has cautioned Nigerians against the use of labels known as ‘Air Doctor’ in the pretext that it prevents the transmission of COVID-19.

NCDC says those who wear these tags often do so as a substitute for facemasks and other recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions to curtail the spread of the pandemic.

According to the centre, people also use ‘Air Doctor’ to alternate physical distancing (avoiding crowded places), hand washing, respiratory hygiene, and cough etiquette as preventive measures against COVID-19.

“Our attention has been drawn to the use of body-worn labels or tags often marketed as ‘Air Doctor’ by members of the public. Those who wear these tags often do so as a substitute for facemasks and other recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions such as physical distancing (avoiding crowded places), hand washing, respiratory hygiene, and cough etiquette as preventive measures against COVID-19.

“These tags are touted as air disinfectants with ability to inactivate any germ within the surrounding of the wearer over a long period of time. There is no available evidence to support the claim that Air doctor creates a ring of germ-free air by purifying the air around the wearer. The active ingredients are often advertised as chlorine dioxide and sodium chlorite. Chlorine dioxide does not exist in the environment for long time, as it dissociates when exposed to sunlight. Any gaseous disinfectant released is not stable or concentrated enough to sanitise droplets or air in the immediate surrounding. 4 These tags do not provide sufficient quantity and concentration of the purported active ingredients into the immediate environment where there is continuous flow of air around the wearer. The tags, therefore, do not provide any protection from droplets expelled by the wearer or from droplets the wearer may receive from other people close by, nor do they decontaminate hands or other surfaces” NCDC says.

While insisting that there is no scientific evidence that the so-called disinfectant tags have any preventive benefit against COVID-19, NCDC says the composition and concentration of the active ingredients in Air Doctor is ineffective against SARS-CoV-2.

Chlorine dioxide and its products, which are contained in such tags, could have serious health hazards especially to children

“Effective preventive measures against SARS-CoV-2 are: regular handwashing with soap under running water or use of alcohol-based hand rubs, physical distancing of at least 2m, wearing of face mask when in public, routine cleaning and disinfection of surfaces at homes and public places and ensuring cross ventilation in indoor settings

“NCDC will continue to provide evidence-based guidelines on COVID-19 prevention and control” the statement added.

“It is important to note that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu timely arrived the scene for an on the spot assessment of the incident.

“The essence of this briefing is to debunk the baseless reports in some of the Media that the relevant authorities and agencies did not do anything to rescue the trapped victims.

“More efforts have been intensified to ensure proper evacuation of the debris with a view to discovering possible victims, while investigation lasts.

“Furthermore, I wish to use this medium to advice members of the public to ensure that their building projects are handled by qualified Architects, Structural Engineers, and other relevant contractors. This would minimize the occurrence of similar incidents in the future”.

Don’t Shed Blood For My Re-election – Obaseki

0

Governor Godwin Obaseki and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said his second term ambition is not worth spilling the blood of anyone in the Edo State governorship election holding tomorrow.

He reassured that the governorship election would be peaceful and violence-free. Speaking shortly after one day prayer and fasting session for a peaceful election, organised by the Edo Christian Community for all the governorship candidates ahead of the election, Obaseki urged eligible voters to come out en masse without fear of intimidation or harassment.

Obaseki said: “The church is the pillar on which we rest, and therefore, I have no fear whatsoever.

I take actions and people say I am very courageous, but it is God and not me. I have the church and God behind me, so why should I be afraid? “Ordinarily, an election is supposed to be a contest where people go to sell their ideals and citizens in their own freewill go and vote for those ideals they believe in; it shouldn’t be one where people will do anything to get power. “Election should not be one in which we shed blood because election will always come. If you die in an election, you will not be there in the next one to vote. So there is no need for violence.”

The governor noted: “It’s unfortunate that where we are today we are all afraid that there will be trouble, that there will be crisis and violence. But by the grace of God, we will all come out and vote and there won’t be any bloodshed.

“There is no need for any violence and if anybody decides to act in a violent manner, just walk away because our lives are very precious. I have a covenant with God; if it will cost the blood of anybody for me to get into power, he should not let me have power.”

prayed that God would make peace reign before, during and after the election. “In this election, rigging and evil will not have their way. We knock the engine of their operation; Edo people shall go out and vote their consciences and the will of God will be done,” the clergy prayed

A little boy from Imo State has gone viral after he locally manufactured an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) that dispenses cash.

The Boy Manufactures ATM in Imo State.

In the video which is now trending on social media, onlookers who spoke in Igbo language could be heard asking the little boy to show them how the ATM works,

The boy then turned the ATM on, pressed some buttons, inserted something that looks like an ATM card and the machine began dispensing money.

It is still unclear what he used in ‘manufacturing’ the handmade Automated Teller Machine but one thing noticeable about his craft is the fact that it shares several similarities with an actual ATM – It has lights, uses an ATM card and also dispenses cash when some buttons are pressed.

As at the time of filing this report, details of the boy are still scanty. An update will be made to that effect as soon as his details emerge.

Any Society Where Thugs Become Role Models Will Fail – Jonathan

0

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says any society where thugs become role models is doomed to fail.

Writing as a guest columnist on THISDAY on Friday, Jonathan said it is sad that in some places, miscreants are celebrated for the roles they play during elections.

In the article entitled, ‘COVID-19, democracy and task of nation building’, the former president said he is convinced that electronic voting would eliminate rigging during elections.

“I am also convinced that electronic voting will eliminate the worrisome issue of massive rigging and violence during elections because it will limit human presence during voting,” he said.

“It will bring an end to incessant deployment of miscreants during elections because there will be no room for ballot box stuffing or snatching. It is sad that in some places, these miscreants are even celebrated, because of the ignoble roles they play during elections.

“I should point out that a society where thugs become role models is doomed to fail.”

According to him, holding elections regularly does not define democracy.

“Holding regular elections alone does not really define democracy or guarantee good governance,” Jonathan said.

“We need to work on how to strengthen the pillars of democracy where they are weak, and enhance political stability across the continent.

“You can always tell how credible or otherwise a democratic process has been from the level of protests, violence and the number of post-election litigations. For Africa to make more progress towards building liberal democracies, we should first take deliberate measures to strengthen the independence of the electoral management bodies.”

The former president also said Africa missed out on the industrial revolution and lagging behind in the race to space.

“We therefore have no reason to fail our people in democracy. True democracy guarantees free, fair elections and peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another and it is within our capacity to achieve that,” he said.

“Before the end of this year, five nations in West Africa alone are scheduled to hold Presidential elections. They include Ghana, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Niger. That for me is a plus and an important step in the right direction.”
