BREAKING: INEC Declares PDP’s Godwin Obaseki Winner Of Edo Election

Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defeated Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to win a second term as governor of Edo State.

Governor Obaseki was returned elected after polling the highest number of votes in the keenly-contested poll conducted on Saturday.

INEC Returning Officer for the poll declared the governor as the winner on Sunday at the office of the electoral umpire in Benin City, which doubled as the final collation centre.

The governor secured 307,955 of the total votes, 84,336 more votes than his closest rival Ize-Iyamu, who got 223, 619 votes.

A total of 14 political parties fielded candidates to jostle for the office of the governor in the state.

It is the first governorship poll to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) since the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

While it held in some places in line with the COVID-19 protocols of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the compliance level was very low in other polling areas.

The announcement by the returning officer follows the collation of the results from all the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo where the election was conducted.

Governor Obaseki’s victory comes on the back of a tensed and heated electioneering process that saw him dump the APC after being disqualified from the primaries, join the PDP and overcome stiff opposition and criticism by members of his former party, including former ally and his predecessor Adams Oshiomhole.

It was a dramatic process that saw Obaseki run a governorship race against Ize-Iyamu for a second time in four years.

Both men faced each other in 2016, albeit with Obasek flying the flag of the APC and Ize-Iyamu flying that of the PDP.

A political rift between the governor and Oshiomhole which spiraled beyond the state to national politics, saw both men switch parties and square up against each other on platforms they once criticised.

The campaign, characterised by drama and controversy that did not spare the State House of Assembly, was tempered by the intervention of the Oba of Benin to calm fears that the poll could turn violence heightened.

A peace accord was also signed by all the candidates days before the poll as stakeholders made concerted efforts to ensure a successful poll.

Preliminary reports from some electoral observers have held that it was mostly peaceful and largely free and fair.

US Security Agents Seize Poisonous Package Sent To Trump

The United States law enforcement agents during the week intercepted a poisonous package addressed to President Donald Trump, sources told CNN.

It was reported that two tests conducted on the package confirmed the presence of ricin, a highly toxic compound extracted from castor beans that has been used in terror plots.

Ricin can be used in powder, pellet, mist, or acid form and if ingested, can cause nausea, vomiting, and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines, followed by failure of the liver, spleen, and kidneys, and death by collapse of the circulatory system.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Secret Service were said to be investigating the matter.

“The FBI and our US Secret Service and US Postal Inspection Service partners are investigating a suspicious letter received at a US government mail facility. At this time, there is no known threat to public safety,” the FBI told CNN in a statement.

The report stated that all mails for the White House were usually sorted and screened at an offsite facility before reaching the White House.

Trump, who was inaugurated as the 45th US President in January 2017, is seeking re-election in November.

Senator representing Abia North, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu has finally spoken up on the upcoming local government election in Abia State.

In a chat with ABN TV on Saturday, Kalu who is Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate said APC will take part in the election, insisting that it must be free and fair.

The former governor also said his party, the APC would want to see all the original election materials to guarantee that the process will not be compromised.

He said the materials for the election must be authenticated at the local government headquarters and in the field as well to foster trust in the process.

“We are asking for a free, fair, and credible election. We urge all the security agencies to be ready for the election and all eyes to be on the election” he added.

The federal lawmaker also expressed delight that a large number of defectors from other political parties are identifying with the APC.

While insisting that APC is popular in Abia, Sen. Kalu emphasized that under a free and fair electoral contest, the APC will have a clean sweep in Abia North and other parts of the state.

He expressed the readiness of APC to slug it out with the ruling PDP in the state.

According to Sen. Kalu, the APC will field popular and credible candidates across the local governments to enhance its chances of victory.

He said time has passed when results of elections are manufactured, calling on the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to advise Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) to allow the will of people of the state to prevail.

While appealing to the law enforcement agencies to be vigilant, the APC chieftain said his party will not tolerate unlawful acts during the election.

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Godwin Obaseki in Saturday’s election, is currently leading Osagie Ize-Iyamu, his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, with over 50,000 votes.

Out of the results of 11 local government areas declared so far by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obaseki secured victory across eight, leaving his opponent with three.

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Godwin Obaseki, is leading Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, in the Edo governorship election.

According to the results that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced so far, the PDP candidate is leading with over 13,000 votes.

As of 12:45am on Sunday, the commission had declared results in three local government areas.

In Igueben, Obaseki polled 7,870 votes, while Ize-Iyamu garnered 5,199 votes. In Esan central, the PDP candidate secured 10,964 votes while his rival trailed with 6,719 votes, and in Esan north-east, Obaseki polled 13,579 votes, leaving Ize-Iyamu with 6,559 votes.

The total votes of the candidates in the three local government areas are PDP: 32,143, APC, 18,477, leaving a margin of 13,666.

Results were still being collated across LGAs in the state as of the time of filing this report.

BREAKING: Lagos Government Okays Full Reopening Of Churches, Mosques

After months of being shut down, the Lagos State Government has approved the full reopening of worship centres in the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced this during a briefing in the state on Saturday.

According to him, churches are now allowed to observe their mid-week services, while the mosques are also allowed to carry out their five times a day prayer routine, with strict compliance to COVID-19 safety protocols.

“We must not forget that the coronavirus pandemic is still very much with us, and we must, therefore, strive to prioritize the safety of all our children, teachers, parents, and the entire society,” the governor said.

Before now, the state had allowed for a gradual re-opening of places of worship as lockdowns eased.

With the full re-opening now, the governor has urged Lagosians to continue to act responsibly and maintain the required levels of hygiene.

Some other parts of the world have witnessed a resurgence of COVID-19 infections and rising possibilities of “hard lockdowns”, which according to Governor Sanwo-Olu may become inevitable for Nigerians if caution is not applied.

“Let me make it clear that if we do not continue to maintain our guard, and sustain the adherence to all required protocols and guidelines, we will find ourselves in a situation where fresh lockdowns are inevitable,” he warned.

“The only way to avoid this is to continue to act responsibly: maintain the required levels of hygiene, through regular handwashing and use of sanitizers, wear masks in all public places, avoid non-essential public gatherings, and maintain the prescribed levels of physical distancing at all times”.

The total infections in the country have now risen to 56,956, with 48,305 patients recovered and 1,094 deaths recorded.

At the onset of the virus in Nigeria, Lagos became the epicenter, gapping other states with its caseload despite frantic efforts to curb the spread.

However, in recent times, other states such as Plateau have started to witness a surge with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 stating that it might become the new epicenter in the country.

APC Warns Abia Electoral Chairman Against Truncating LG Polls

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abia State chapter has warned the Chairman of Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa against engaging in any act capable of jeopardizing the December Local Government Polls.

The Publicity Secretary of the APC, Comrade Benedict Godson in a chat with our reporter said that the party was ready to participate in the December 19, Local Government Chairman and Councillorship polls that will hold across the 17 Local Government areas of the state.

Godson who boasted that the party has credible and qualified persons to be fielded for the elections expressed confidence in the party’s victory at the polls.

Mkpa who spoke at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, charged the parties to ensure that they screen the certificates of all aspirants to ensure they meet the minimum qualification of a secondary school certificate before submitting their names to the Commission.

The ABSIEC chairman announced that the election for the Councillor will equally hold in all the 292 Political Wards of the state on the same day.

According to him, political parties that are interested in participating in the poll should visit the office of the Commission to obtain a detailed time table for the election.

He said that the date of collection of forms for candidates would be communicated to the parties later.

He also advised the party leaders to ensure that the prevailing relevant COVID-19 protocols are observed throughout the period leading to the polls and assured that the commission on its part will ensure that the polls would comply with COVID-19 safety protocols.

The State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Rt Hon. Asiforo Okere speaking at the event thanked ABSIEC for coming up with a time table for the election and assured that his party will mobilize her members to participate in the polls as well as abide by all the guidelines issued by the Commission.

Also Speaking, the state Chairmen of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Rev Augustine Ehiemere, implored ABSIEC to ensure a free and fair election with all the parties given a level playing ground.

Fourteen bodies have been recovered from the Akaeze-Ukwu River in Ebonyi state; site of the deadly motor accident which occurred on Friday night.

This followed the location and recovery of the bus by divers brought in from neighboring states to aid in the search and rescue of the victims.

The Nation had reported how a bus carrying over 30 passengers plunged into the River along the Akaeze-Ishiagu expressway, Ivo local government area of the state.

Five of the passengers, who were returning from a burial, were rescued and taken to the hospital on Friday.

However, one of them died at the hospital while the others are said to still be unconscious.

Chairman of the local government, Onyebuchi Ogbadu confirmed the recovery of the extra thirteen dead bodies on Saturday.

According to him, the State government had to bring in divers from Rivers and Cross River states to help in the search of the bus.

“The divers were able to locate the bus and pushed it up to enable the crane to pull it out,” he said.

The Chairman said they are still searching for the remaining passengers aboard the bus.

“The driver said he was carrying 32 persons in the bus so we are still looking for about 13 or more persons.”

Ogbadu said the driver was able to dive out of the bus as it was plunging into the river and was one of those rescued on Friday.

Police spokesman Loveth Odah said 14 corpses have been recovered, seven male and seven female.

She said among the five victims rescued is the driver of the said 608 coaster bus with Reg no. UKP 78 XA Mr. Nwaonu Chinedu a native of IKWO LGA of the State.

She said the victim who died yesterday is a female who yet to be identified.

She said: “The female victim was confirmed dead by a medical Doctor on arrival at Dennis Hospital Akaeke in the Area.

“The driver narrated that he conveyed 32 members of the Christ Peculiar Church of Nigeria Enugu State branch to attend a burial ceremony at Nguzu  Edda in Afikpo South LGA of the State”.

“14 corpses have been recovered (7 female and 7 male) together with the 608 Vehicle.

“The corpses have deposited at  Martha Memorial hospital mortuary AFIKPO preservation.

Odah said among those in the vehicle who are still being searched for is Ca retired Superintendent of Police Livinus Mbah.

“The Executive Governor of Ebonyi State visited the scene of incident together with the Commissioner of Police Ebonyi State who described the incident as a very unfortunate one.

” He urges road users to avoid speed/reckless driving especially in this ember months”.
