Politicians Investing Money In Vote Buying – Situation Room

1

A coalition of over 70 human rights organizations, under the aegis of Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, on Monday raised fears over alleged commercialisation of votes in Nigeria, describing it as a threat to the electoral system.

The group added that politicians were increasingly investing money in vote-buying, noting that voters appeared willing to sell their votes.

The Co-convener of the NCC Situation Room and Executive Director, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, Clement Nwankwo, expressed the views in his second interim statement on Edo State governorship election.

Nwankwo said, “The menace of vote trading, which includes buying and selling, appears to be deepening in Nigeria’s elections. Politicians are increasingly investing money to buy votes with voters appearing to be willing to sell their votes. In the Edo State election, this practice was widespread with all of the major political parties engaging in this infringement.”

The group, which called for more effective enforcement of election laws added, “Situation Room calls on the National Assembly to move quickly and urgently proceed with legislative action to ensure the passage of the Electoral Offences Commission Bill that creates a body to enforce respect for election laws.

“Overall, the Edo State governorship election was violence-free to the relief of stakeholders who had feared that the violence-laden rhetoric of the election participants could pose a threat to peaceful elections.”

In a related development, a pro-democracy think tank, the Centre for Democracy and Development, on Monday rated the Edo State election as “relatively credible.”

A statement by the Director of CDD, Idayat Hassan; and Head (Election Analysis Centre), Prof. Adele Jinadu, described the peaceful conduct as a refreshing development.

The statement reads partly, “It (the peaceful conduct) points the way away from the degeneration that has historically been the country’s sad experience with electoral outcomes, and towards outcomes that significantly reflect the mandate of the electorate.”

Stop Abducting IPOB Members – Nnamdi Kanu Warns Security Agents

0

Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday, condemned in strong terms,  the alleged harassment, abduction, torture and secret killing of its members or anybody suspected to be its member, throughout Igbo land.

The pro-Biafra group alleged that the deliberate ethnic cleansing has continued unabated despite its repeated alarms. In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB alleged that for no justifiable reason, the Nigerian security operatives on September 18, 2020, murdered one, Mazi Onyeka Udechukwu, a vigilante operative in Enugu State.

It equally alleged that the men, whom it described as terrorists in security uniform also shot and shattered their victim, Udechukwu’s father’s private part with bullets at Ogui Road, Enugu.

It said that the man whom they shattered his private part with bullets is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

“We the global family of IPOB, ably led by our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, condemn in very strong terms, the constant harassment, abduction, torture, and secret killing of Biafrans or anybody suspected to be IPOB member throughout Biafraland.

“This deliberate ethnic cleansing has continued unabated despite our repeated alarms. For no just cause, the Nigerian security operatives on September 18, 2020, murdered Mazi Udechukwu, a vigilante operative in Enugu State.

“These terrorists in security uniform also shot and shattered Udechukwu’s father’s private part with bullets at Ogui Road, Enugu. The victim’s badly wounded father is currently receiving intensive medical treatment in a hospital.

“It is still a surprise that the Nigeria security agents suddenly became a willing tool in the hands of the Fulani-led Federal Government for the elimination of Judo -Christians and Biafrans.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the failure of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the recent unprovoked attack and barbaric killing of unarmed IPOB members at Emene, has only emboldened the perpetrators of this atrocity and criminality.

“We are equally aware of the ongoing abductions at Omuma Road, Aba, Abia State, and Obigbo in Igweocha, Rivers State being perpetrated by those terrorists in a Nigerian security uniform.

“More than two people have already been murdered. IPOB is monitoring all these atrocities, and those behind them must be prepared to face the consequences when the time comes. “

The latest victims of this criminality include Mazi Chukwudi Idika and 10 others, who committed no crime known to mankind. The Fulani dominated security officers in Abia State, also tortured an innocent woman and took her into custody without any provocation.

“We are constrained to warn that Nigerian security agencies must stop using high handedness on the peaceful members of IPOB, and innocent citizens of Biafra from now, otherwise, they will regret their actions soon. Enough is enough.”

Giving Provokes God’s Visitation — Sen. Kalu

0

Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has called on Christians to imbibe the culture of giving for the development of God’s kingdom.

Kalu who announced a cash gift also says people provoke God’s visitation when they contribute cheerfully, adding that it open doors of financial breakthrough.

“I want to prophetically assure you that as you give today, the attention of God will come to you because you have provoked the visitation of God by force over your life. He will end all your life battles; reward you with financial increase; bless you with long life and restore your honour” he said.

The former Abia governor who was a Special Guest of Honour at the fundraising ceremony of Assemblies of God Nigeria FESTAC 3, Lagos on Sunday extolled the efforts the church which he said started from the humble beginning has made in converting members.

May I start my remarks by thanking the Ministers and the Organizing Committee of this event, as well as the entire members of this Church for inviting me to this all-important event as a Special Guest of Honour. I am particularly delighted and impressed to observe that this Church which started from a humble beginning is bringing together such a large number of worshippers.

“Please, accept my hearty congratulations on your decision to give your permanent place of worship a facelift. Indeed, this move could not have come at a better time than now, when the church as the biggest influencer in Nigeria is expected to play a dominant and leading role in nation-building and transforming the lives of kingdom citizens” he said.

The Abia North Senator while noting the role of the Church in tackling social ills said the church must begin to respond effectively to its roles in nation-building.

“There is no doubt that in the 21st Century Nigeria, the church has some strategic and important roles to play in fighting societal ills like social and economic injustice, greed, corruption, nepotism, maladministration, poverty, impunity, insecurity, rights abuse, and underdevelopment etc.

“It is fundamental that, for any church to respond effectively and strategically to its societal roles in nation-building, and winning of souls to Christ, all physical and structural challenges and barriers such as inadequate space for worship and other gatherings, unsafe/insecurity of church members during and after services, environmental degradation, etc must be frontally addressed. I want to believe that these factors and many more must-have prompted the idea and desire to give the permanent site of this Church a facelift.

“As kingdom builders, we must all be ready to answer the clarion call to support the transformation of this place of worship to a serene, calm, relaxed and comfortable place for praying, praising, worshipping and teaching the word of God as well as a centre for broad knowledge acquisition.

“I see today’s event as a divine call for everyone of us here, to join hands and work together to build and advance God’s kingdom because He lays emphasis when it comes to building His house. We must all be ready and committed to generously give our best to the work of God. The present economic hardship in the country should not discourage us because there are enormous blessings and rewards that come with giving towards the execution of God’s work. I encourage us to borrow a leaf from King Solomon in the Bible, who sacrificially built the house of God, and he saw the hand of God” he said.

He further appealed to clerics to make soul winning a cardinal objective.

As I round off my remarks, I urge the ministers of this Church, and indeed all men of God to make soul winning the priority of their ministries. In every community, there are men, women, boys and girls who would respond to the word of God if a spirit-filled soul-winner presents God’s gracious offer of salvation to them.

“Finally, on behalf of my family, I wish to announce a donation of N500,000.00 towards the execution of the project. May God bless you as you keep up your tireless effort to spread God’s word and build His kingdom”.
