Deal With Me If I Become A Godfather – Obaseki

2

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, says godfatherism is dangerous to the tenets of democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking during a ‘Thank You’ visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Abuja, Governor Obaseki asked the people of the state to deal with him should he become a godfather.

“God forbid I become a godfather, I should be dealt with accordingly because it is dangerous to the concept of democracy,” he said.

While condemning godfatherism in politics, the governor argued that people who play such roles act outside of the nation’s constitution.

He warned that if people allow the act to trend in politics and governance, it will be worse than military rule.

“The godfather acts outside of the constitution. He now controls people who are constitutional players.

“If we allow such a situation to continue, it will be worse than military rule. When people who have nothing at stake, who have no checks and balances in them can just arbitrarily decide that this is the way the constitution can be interpreted, that is why the concept is wrong,” he said.

On his part, President Buhari thanked Obaseki for coming along with his deputy, Philip Shaibu, to visit him at the State House even after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded Edo Election.

The President maintained that he ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and other security agencies not to interfere in the polls to allow the will of Edo people to prevail.

“If contestants have too much money and they decide to spray, so be it. But what I insist is, nobody should go and raise a counterforce to the government, arm heavily-drugged thugs to go and humiliate people.

“I want Nigerians to appreciate that I respect them as Nigerians and that I am bound by the oath I have taken, that their security is in the hands of God and in the hands of the government, which I am leading,” he said.

According to President Buhari, he was congratulating the Edo governor “reluctantly” because he defeated the candidate of his party, the APC.

Governor Obaseki defeated APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to win a second term as governor of Edo State, destroying godfatherism in the state.

The governor secured 307,955 of the total votes, 84,336 more votes than his closest rival Ize-Iyamu, who got 223, 619 votes.

Those Calling Me ‘Supreme Court Governor’ Are Ignorant – Hope Uzodinma [VIDEO]

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has faulted those referring to him as a “Supreme Court Governor”, saying that they are ignorant.

The governor who was interviewed on Channels Television’s Hard Copy on Friday argued he was not the first to be favoured by a Supreme Court justice, adding that he emerged as governor of the state through legitimate means.

“It is the height of ignorance because they don’t know what they are saying. There is a reason for the Supreme Court. In the doctrine and principle of democracy, the law expected that there would be grievances and malpractices in the electoral process,” Uzodinma said.

“When this happens, the only legitimate right you have is to seek redress at the court. And of course, the court determines. Remember that this is not the first time, so many elections had held where the candidates went to court and they got justice. So, why will mine be different?

“Human beings voted and the votes were not counted. I went to the Supreme Court and INEC was unable to explain why they did not enter the result. It was a simple judgment. The Supreme Court said INEC was wrong.

On governance, Uzodinma said his administration had been making efforts to increase the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Imo State.

He, however, regretted that following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s IGR nosedived.

According to the governor, a huge percentage of companies doing business in Imo have not filed in their tax returns to the state government.

“By January, we were trying to build up our Internally Generated Revenue which was on the increase. By February it was on the increase but the thing nosedived in March.

“As I speak to you, 95 per cent of the companies operating in Imo State have not filed their annual returns,” he said.

Uzodinma emerged as Imo governor after the Supreme Court sacked Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on January 14.

Putin Touts Russian COVID-19 Vaccine, Offers It To UN Staff For Free

Vladimir Putin called the recently approved Russian coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine “reliable, safe, and effective,” offering to supply it to other nations, despite some skepticism.

“We are ready to share experience and continue cooperating with all states and international entities, including in supplying the Russian vaccine, which has proved reliable, safe and effective, to other countries,” Putin said at a virtual United Nations General Assembly.

The Russian president also said he is ready to give the vaccine to the United Nations, whose offices were hit by coronavirus outbreak.

“Russia is ready to provide the UN with all the necessary qualified assistance. In particular, we are offering to provide our vaccine free of charge for the voluntary vaccination of the staff of the UN and its offices,” Putin said.

Russia approved the world’s first coronavirus vaccine, the Sputnik V, in August. It was met with skepticism from the international community because it was studied in only dozens of people.

Putin said at the time that the vaccine was “proven efficient and forms a stable immunity,” and that one of his adult daughters already has received the shot.

The fast-track approval has scientists around the world worried, as an experimental vaccine needs to be studied in tens of thousands of people over months to prove it is safe and effective.

Earlier this month, an international group of researchers sent an open letter to the authors of a Sputnik V study, hoping to clarify certain data irregularities.

“While the research described in this study is potentially significant, the presentation of the data raises several concerns which require access to the original data to fully investigate,” the letter says.

Even the Russian scientists who authored the study admit they were limited; there was a follow-up time of just 42 days, there were only 76 participants, and there was no placebo or control vaccine.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said last month that he “seriously doubt(s)” Russia has proven its vaccine is safe and effective.

As of Tuesday, Russia has 1,105,048 confirmed cases and 19,420 deaths from coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University.

COVID-19 Is A Sign That God Is Not Happy With Us – Aisha Buhari

The wife of President, Aisha Buhari, says the COVID-19 pandemic is a sign that God is not happy with the world.

She said this on Friday at the national mosque, during a public lecture to mark Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary.

While calling for more efforts to ensure that the country succeeds in the fight against the pandemic, she urged Nigerians to offer special prayers for peace, progress and sustainable development as the country marks its 60th independence anniversary.

“The world is no longer the same as a result of the pandemic and the pandemic is a sign that almighty God is not happy with us,” she said.

“We need to pray for forgiveness. I think we have no choice than to continue asking for forgiveness from almighty Allah.”

According to NAN, the first lady urged Nigerians to continue to support the efforts of the present administration to ensure better welfare for citizens.

“The president cannot do it alone. He needs the support and cooperation of all Nigerians, including his appointees, to go in line with his change mantra,” she said.

Jihadist fighters linked to the Islamic State group on Friday killed several security personnel in an ambush on the convoy of the Borno State governor, the Agence France Presse (AFP) reported Friday night quoting sources.

Sources told AFP that eight policemen, three soldiers, and four members of a government-backed militia were killed in the attack on vehicles carrying Borno state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum near the town of Baga on the shores of Lake Chad.

The insurgents opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades as the convoy was passing through a village close to the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, a military coalition of troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

“The governor escaped unhurt but 15 security men on the convoy were killed in a fierce battle with the terrorists”, one source said.

Zulum was on an assessment tour of Baga in preparation for the return of thousands of residents displaced from the town by the jihadists in 2014, the sources said.

The governor flew on a helicopter into the garrison town of Monguno, 60 kilometres (40 miles) away, and headed to Baga in a convoy under tight security, one of the sources said.

All three sources were talking on condition of anonyonimity.

The IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group maintains most of its camps on islands in Lake Chad and the region is known as a bastion for the jihadists.

The militant group has recently intensified attacks on military and civilian targets in the region.

In July Zulum’s convoy came under gun attack from ISWAP outside Baga, forcing him to cancel his trip to the town.

Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has launched an entrepreneurship support program for young Abians with innovative ideas but who need minimal financial support to actualize their projects.

According to him, “we hope to use this program to raise at least 24 entrepreneurs within the next two years, with one winner emerging every month for the next two years. It has always been our dream to approach empowerment from a different perspective rather than the traditional means of giving Keke NAPEP to graduates as empowerment. We want to support ideas because it is what rules the world and I know there are many young Abians with brilliant ideas we can support as long as they meet our criteria”.

He directed the state Commissioner for Information to set up an appropriate platform for those with good entrepreneurial ideas, within the budget of the program, to participate in a monthly competition with the best emerging as winner.

Speaking after receiving the cash support from the Governor, Mr Okoroafor who plans to open a piggery with the funds expressed appreciation to the Governor for responding to his plea for support to start up the project and assured that he will make maximum use of the opportunity to launch himself as a major pig farmer.

When I contacted the Governor for support to start this project, I never knew help would come so fast and I want to assure the Governor that I will never disappoint him. He has surprised me and I know my God will reward him”, he said.

Briefing newsmen, the State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, stated that a team made up of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mrs Ijeoma Ogbonna and DG BCA will select the winners every month and called on young Abians who are resident in the state to submit their proposals to his office in sealed envelopes for consideration. According to him, “while the first winner emerged from the agric sector, the program is open to all areas of entrepreneurship as long as the proposal can be funded within the monthly one million naira limit. All you need to qualify is to be a young Abian that is resident in the state and have good ideas that can be supported to yield good results. The start up grant is non refundable but we have a monitoring team that includes the relevant Local Government Chairman that will ensure that the money is used for the stated purpose.”

He informed that In the spirit of creating more jobs, Governor Ikpeazu is interested in grooming young Àbìàns who are interested in making a career out of horticulture, landscaping and Gardening. According to him, there is an existing vacancy for instant employment for the first ten who applies through his office.

Chief Okiyi further informed that the total package includes the employment of 7 pupil engineers in each of the 17 LGAs of the state who will be trained by the state ministry of works and deployed for road maintenance assignments. He advised those who are interested to submit their applications and curriculum vitae to the office of the state Commissioner for works for immediate engagement.

The National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress has nullified all suspensions, noting that it was yet to receive any communication to this effect.

This was contained in a statement titled, “Disclaimer: Governor Kayode Fayemi, Other Purported ‘Suspensions’ a Nullity – APC”, signed by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena, on Friday.

Nabena said, “The attention of the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress has been drawn to a purported and widely-reported ‘suspension’ of the Governor of Ekiti State, H.E. Kayode Fayemi, as well as an earlier reported ‘indefinite suspension’ of some other party members in the state.

“The actions are a nullity as the Party’s National Secretariat is yet to receive communication from the state chapter on the purported ‘suspensions.’ We strongly advise all members to adhere to our Party constitution.

“Governor Kayode Fayemi remains the leader of the party in Ekiti State. In line with the mandate of the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee and the President’s admonition to party members to ensure and support ongoing amicable and rancour-free settlement of internal party disputes, we call on our esteemed party members and leaders in Ekiti State to be duly guided.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Architect Paul Omotosho-chaired APC Ekiti State Working Committee is the authentic, valid, and duly recognised Executive as no factions or divisions exist in the State Chapter.”

Recall that the state chapter of the party on Thursday, suspended a presidential adviser, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, and the son-in-law to Senator Bola Tinubu, Oyetunde Ojo, and nine other party leaders for alleged disobedience to the directive of the party’s National Executive Committee.

State Publicity Secretary of the party, Ade Ajayi, announced the suspensions via a statement in Ado Ekiti.

In response, a faction of the party to which Senator Ojodu belongs issued a counter suspension order in a letter titled, “Re: Dr. Kayode Fayemi anti-party activities”, on Friday.

The faction, which claimed to be the authentic State Executive Committee of the APC in Ekiti State, suspended the state governor from the party.

The statement was signed by Senator Tony Adeniyi, Senator Babafemi Ojudu Dayo Adeyeye, and five others.
