In 2001, Nigeria’s Agbani Darego made history as the first black queen to win Miss World in a very captivating fashion.

Fast forward to 2020, the coronavirus year, October precisely, the Independent Month, social media is on a meltdown as Google Search shows Darego as ugliest Miss World (You don’t have to check it too you know?).

Nigerians might be divided within, but nothing unites citizens of the most populous black nation in the world than misrepresenting one of their own. Social media, Twitter, like a fuel-laden fallen taker, exploded over Agbani Darego misjudged as the ugliest Miss World.

Many query questions flooding the timelines and appreciating tweets to drum support for the ever beautiful beauty queen, though some had reservations as to how beautiful Darego was as a Miss World.

But her intelligence, which apparently is one of the criteria, stood her out and that poses a fact, everybody can connect with.

First noticed by a Twitter user with the handle, Growth Queen, she said: “I find it interesting that the results to “Who is the most beautiful Miss World” on Google shows links to various rankings. But “Who is the ugliest Miss world” gives you Agbani Darego’s profile, full stop.”

Williams Chidera, in pure sarcasm, wrote: “I wouldn’t blame google because there’s an algorithm that does this sorting, just as it is when you search for idiot and check images. But the websites that said Agbani Darego is ugly you won’t be unfortunate I can’t lie.”

Auchi Polytechnic Rector Dies

Dr. Momodu Sanusi Jimah

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi in Edo State, Dr. Momodu Sanusi Jimah, is dead.

Jimah passed away on Friday, October 2, 2020.

His death came a day after management of the polytechnic debunked social media rumours that he had passed.

Our correspondent gathered that Jimah, who has been sick with stroke, died at a hospital in the State.

The late Auchi polytechnic rector was married and blessed with children. He was aged 60.

Multiple sources within the institution confirmed to CAMPUS GIST that the remains of the deceased has been brought to Auchi for burial on Saturday, according to Islamic rites.

Until his appointment as the substantive Rector, the late Jimah was in acting capacity as Rector of Auchi Polytechnic.

He was a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning.

Students have since taken to social media to mourn the late Auchi poly rector.

Many received the news with mixed feelings; with some celebrating over alleged increments of tuition fee, which they credited to Jimah.

Also confirming the report, the Institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mustapha Oshiobuge, told our correspondent on phone that the rector was no more.

“He (Jimah) passed on this evening (Friday). He was 60-year-old. He will be buried tomorrow (Saturday)”, the school spokesman added.

Akeredolu Collects N750m Monthly As Security Vote ― Ajayi

CANDIDATE of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the Ondo governorship election, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his estranged deputy governor Hon Agboola Ajayi have disagreed on running grants and security votes they collect on a monthly basis.

Akeredolu had said that his deputy who is now the governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party receives the highest running grant of N13m monthly which is the highest in the country by any deputy governor and yet betrayed him.

He said that “Agboola (Ajayi) does not want to wait for his time. I made him comfortable, I asked him to represent me in so many places but some people were warning me, I said they should leave him alone.

“No deputy governor has collected what he was collecting in the history of the state. I gave him N13 million monthly, his predecessors did not collect as much as that.

“No deputy governor collects as much as that in Nigeria. I gave him enough room to operate yet he betrayed me.

But Ajayi in his response through his Media Adviser, Allen Sowore, said that Governor Akeredolu collects N750m monthly as security votes.

Allen said that the governor lied that he collects N13m noting that he only collects only N12m.

According to him “The Deputy Governor is surprised that the Governor could go to the press announcing the sum of N13m as what the Deputy Governor gets as if it was a gift for the personal use and not for the use of his office.

“The Deputy Governor states that what came to his office until Akeredolu refused to release the same was 12 million naira per month.

“This includes the imprest of his office, allowances of staff, fuelling of vehicles, care of his residence, and welfare of his aides.

“Huge as the amount may appear, it amounts to not so much when the heads and number of individuals it caters for are considered.

“The governor gets a security vote of 750million naira every month. He, Akeredolu, also gets an imprest of about N150million

But the governor in his response through his chief Press Secretary Segun Ajiboye described Ajayi as a liar.

Ajiboye in a statement said that “the disclosure by Mr Governor that the governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) receives a monthly running grant of N13 million appears to have further emitted the entrenched character of the man in question, Agboola Ajayi.

“True to type, Ajayi has resorted to lies and fabrications that Mr Governor gets a monthly payment of N750m as security vote. This brazen misinformation is not a surprise but a true reflection of the unstable and treacherous content in Ajayi.

“The general public is urged to take advantage of the Freedom of Information Act to interrogate both statements by Mr Governor and Ajayi.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the State Bureaucracy which process such payments is very available to confirm the veracity or frivolity of either of the statements.

“The October 10 governorship election is between integrity and the absence of it.

“The patent greed which has provided motivation for the treachery and perfidy of Ajayi appears to have created further paths of dishonesty to oil his political misadventure. Succinctly, he is misled my his mind of greed.

The statement said that “By his antecedents, Agboola Ajayi would have wittingly provided evidence of the payment of such huge amount even before now if it was true.

Journalist Sets Self Ablaze In Russia

The editor of a Russian independent news site died on Friday after setting herself on fire following a police raid in a probe targeting an opposition group, her website confirmed.

The news site Koza. Press in the industrial city of Nizhny Novgorod reported that its editor-in-chief Irina Slavina had “set herself on fire in front of the police headquarters”.

Investigators in the city later confirmed her death in a statement saying her body had been found with “signs of thermal burns” while saying there was “no basis” to connect her death to police raids since she was only a witness in a probe.

The journalist had written on Facebook hours before her death: “I ask you to blame my death on the Russian Federation.”

A video posted on social media reportedly showed her setting herself on fire on a bench.

Slavina’s website carried out investigative reporting and covered opposition to President Vladimir Putin, her friends and supporters said Friday, a rarity in regional journalism which faces pressure from local authorities.

She “died from her injuries,” her site reported, saying her husband had confirmed. The site became inaccessible shortly afterwards.

Her death prompted tributes from journalists and activists including rights advocate Pavel Chikov who wrote on the Telegram messenger that he had worked with her twice when she was charged with disrespecting the authorities and publishing fake news.

Slavina had written on social media on Thursday that police and federal guards burst into her flat in an early morning raid.

She said they were searching for evidence of links to Open Russia, an opposition movement funded by Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky that has been ruled undesirable by the authorities, amid allegations that it funded protests in the city.

“I don’t have anything,” said the journalist, adding that police confiscated her notebooks and computer as well as laptops and phones belonging to her and her husband and daughter.

Chevron Nigeria To Sack 25% Of Workforce

Chevron Nigeria Limited has said it will slash its workforce by 25 percent as it is reviewing its manpower requirements in the light of the changing business environment.

CNL disclosed this on Friday in a statement entitled ‘Chevron Nigeria Limited reviews workforce in accordance with business exigencies’.

The oil major said it would continue to evaluate opportunities to improve capital efficiency and reduce operating costs.

CNL’s General Manager Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, said, “The aim is to have a business that is competitive and have an appropriately sized organisation with improved processes.

“This will increase efficiency and effectiveness, retain value, reduce cost, and generate more revenue for the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

According to him, the new organisational structures will, unfortunately, require approximately 25 per cent reduction in the work force across the various levels of the organisation.

“It is important to note that all our employees will retain their employment until the reorganisation process is completed,” Brikinn said.

He said there were no plans to migrate Nigerian jobs outside the country.

He said, “We have prospects for our company in Nigeria; however, we must make the necessary adjustments in light of the prevailing business climate; and we need everyone’s support to get through these tough times stronger, more efficient and more profitable, in order to sustain the business.

“We are actively engaging our workforce to ensure they understand why this is being done. We will continue to consistently engage all relevant stakeholders, including the leadership of the employee unions as we continue this process of business optimisation.”

Police Service Commission Stops Promotion Of 112 Senior Officers

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has stopped the promotions of 112 senior police officers.

According to the Commission, this was due to the “failure of the Inspector General of Police to comply with the directive of the Commission to attach the Presidential approval for the creation of additional Police Zonal Commands and Departments from where the vacancies for the recommended Officers were harvested.”

The Commission went on to approve the promotion of 175 senior police officers.

These were disclosed in a statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Ikechukwu Ani, on Friday in Abuja.

The Commission said the decisions were part of the highpoints of the 9th Plenary Meeting in Abuja on Monday and Tuesday, September 28th and 29th, 2020 presided over by Commission Chairman, retired Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith.

“The Commission promoted one Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Sanusi Lemu to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG, to replace retired DIG Abdulmajid Ali, representing the North Central. It also approved the promotion of one Commissioner of Police, CP. Mustapha Dandaura, former CP Anambra and Rivers States to the substantive rank of an Assistant Inspector General of Police.

“Also promoted were 167 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents, three Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendents, two Assistant Superintendents of Police to Deputy Superintendents and four Inspectors to Assistant Superintendents.

“The Commission stood down the promotions of 112 senior Police Officers for failure of the Inspector General of Police to comply with the directive of the Commission to attach the Presidential approval for the creation of additional Police Zonal Commands and Departments from where the vacancies for the recommended Officers were harvested.

“The Commission stood down the promotion of 13 Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Assistant Inspectors General, eight Deputy Commissioners of Police to Commissioners to Commissioners and 91 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners.

“The 167 Superintendents of Police promoted to Chief Superintendents include; Hezekiah Ali, Chukwuma Johnson Ubasonye, Samson Oyemauche, Ismail Lawal, Oyedele Saka Oyerinde and Nieketien George. Others were; Adamu Garba, Divisional Police Officer, Abakaliki Road, Enugu State Command, Ikechukwu Ogoegbunam Udegbunam, Unit Commander, EOD, Jalingo, Taraba State Command, Abiodun Oluwaseun Ayinde, Ogun State Command, and Wellinghton Omorogieva among others.

“The Commission also confirmed the acting appointments of 60 senior Police Officers including three Commissioners of Police and four Deputy Commissioners.

“The beneficiaries are Egbetokun Adeolu, Commissioner of Police Kwara State; Odumosu Olusegun, Commissioner of Police Lagos State and Shehu Usman Shuaibu, Commissioner of Police Works in the Force Headquarters. Others are; Deputy Commissioner of Police Nwonyi Emeka, DCP Ibrahim Maikaba; DCP Ahmed Musa and DCP Jimoh Moshood, former Force Public Relations Officer, and currently DCP, CID, Airport Command, Lagos.

“The Commission also confirmed the acting appointments of three CSPs, Azogor Edu Jude, Usman Musa, Presidential Villa, and Alhassan Idris Gambo. The appointments of three Superintendents of Police were also confirmed. They are Ijomah Chidebere Joseph, Sector Commander, FIB, STS, Enugu, Ogarachi Chima Eze, O/C Marine Command Port Harcourt, and Olusegun Osunbure.

“The Commission’s decisions are expected to be conveyed to the Inspector General of Police on Monday, October 5th 2020 for implementation,” it reads.

Petrol Pump Price May Crash

The Pipeline Products Marketing Company (PPMC) may crash the prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol this month, ABN TV learnt at the weekend.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) National Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, said the marketers are looking forward to a downward review of the ex-depot price for October.

He based his forecast on the decline crude prices. The Brent Crude that was $40 per barrel is today $39. 38.

He, however, said the marketers were expecting an announcement of the new price from the PPMC, which is a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

But Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) had last month said the price of petrol is not solely a factor of crude oil prices.

Its Executive Secretary, Abdulkadir Saidu, dropped hint marketers have the approval for fixing the prices of petrol because it has been deregulated.

According to the agency, only market forces determine the prices of any deregulated product.

The Federal Government deregulated the product in March this year.

Last month, the PPMC pegged the ex-depot price at N151. 56 per litre and deliberately shirked the responsibility of announcing the pump price.

With the leverage, the marketers across the country have sold the PMS for between N158 and N162 per litre.

In that month of September, the Brent Crude sold for $46 per barrel.

The PPMC had on 2nd September 2020 in a brief internal memo with ref: “PPMC /IB/LS/020, dates September 2, 2020, the company said “a new product price adjustment has been effected on our payment platform.

“To this end, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is now one hundred and fifty-one naira, fifty-six kobo (N151.61) per litre.”

The Head Depot Manager, D.O. Agbalaya, who signed the memo said: “This is effective from 2nd September 2020.”

The price of the Brent crude was $46 per barrel on Friday.

The marketers sold petrol for between N145.80 to N150 per litre in the month of August.

PPPRA had on August 4 approved an ex-depot price of N138.62 per litre for the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS ) petrol and kept the pump price to its chest.

The agency reviewed it upward by N6 from its previous N132.00 per litre of July.

The Federal Government based its hike on the increase in the prices of crude oil in the month of August.

The Brent Crude sold that for $43.24 per barrel in July rose to $44.03 per barrel in August.

It deregulated the product in March this year.

In the month of July, the agency had approved a pump price of a band of N140.80 to N143.80 per litre.

It was the first time that the agency approved a new price after the removal of petrol subsidy.

Prior to the July 1 hike, the agency had on May 1, approved price band of N121.50 to N123.50 per litre for the product.

APC Has Performed More Than Critics – Malami

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has performed more than its critics.

He said members of the governing party should be proud of the administration for the milestone achievements recorded so far.

Malami spoke when he hosted members of the Integrity Group of the Non-National Working Committee of the National Executive Committee (Non-NWC NEC) of the ruling party in his of in Abuja.

The administration has been under attacks due to challenges occasioned by global economic recession, insecurity, poverty, corruption and lack of infrastructural provisions.

But Malami said: “Our party has not done too badly. We have great and good stories to tell and that can be established factually and not out of mere rhetorics.

“When you talk of empowerment we have not done too badly, we have established the fact that we have done unprecedentedly well as far as empowerment and social investments are concerned.

“When in 2018 we had course to recover about $322 million from Switzerland, Mr. President committed himself to supporting those that are less privileged and those that are indigent with the fund. We have in place N-power programme, which indeed constituted the source of support for the unemployed graduates.

“We have in place school feeding program which was targeted at providing meals for the pupils at the primary and perhaps secondary schools level.

“We had trader money and the success of the programme had indeed now snowballed into what we have today related to 774 local government employment scheme and among others.

“So, if you are talking of direct impact of this government in improving the welfare, wellbeing and making provision for the less privileged members of the society, I think the trader money, N-power, the school feeding programme, taking 100 million people out of poverty and in fact even the agricultural policies of the government had indeed proven important tools for employment generation.

“This is a government that inherited massive unemployment in the polity, a government that inherited actions by which people are deprived of the means of their livelihood.

“In terms of infrastructures, this government has done much as well. This government has completed the projects that were there in the last 16 years ago; that was budgeted for the year in year out without any meaningful progress.”

The Minister described the nation’s insecurity as superficial. “If you talk of security, notwithstanding the noise that they make all over the place that we have not succeeded, there is no justification to that allegation made by the opposition.

“This is a government that came at a time when indeed about 17 local governments across the nation were in the hands of the Boko Haram.

“This government has succeeded in reclaiming the territories. Not only reclaiming the territories in question but this is a government that came into place at a time when Boko Haram could travel right from Sambisa down to Kano cause lots of deaths and destruction of properties.”

China MOCKS President Trump Coronavirus Diagnosis

The editor of an influential Chinese state-run newspaper has mocked Donald Trump after the US President and first lady Melania Trump both tested positive for the coronavirus.

Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the Global Times, a major Chinese tabloid and mouthpiece of the Communist Party, said that President Trump and his wife ‘have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19’.

He claimed that the diagnosis revealed the severity of the coronavirus outbreak in the US and would sabotage Trump’s upcoming re-election.

Hu’s mocking comment comes after the US leader confirmed the news on Thursday evening, tweeting: ‘Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!’

It comes as the president’s top aide Hope Hicks also contracted the virus after traveling with Trump on Air Force One and Marine One multiple times over the last week.

The Chinese senior journalist reacted to the news with jeers, claiming that President Trump and the first lady are paying for the price for downplaying the coronavirus pandemic.

He wrote in a tweet this morning: ‘President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19.

‘The news shows the severity of the US’ pandemic situation. It will impose a negative impact on the image of Trump and the US, and may also negatively affect his reelection,’ Hu said.

The Chinese tabloid has repeatedly slammed Washington for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

It branded the US as a ‘barbaric and greedy’ country that ‘doesn’t care about humanitarianism’ in an article published in June.

The newspaper also claimed that ‘the US government has failed its people and also failed the world’.

Trump, who has boasted of how he brought US markets to record highs, revealed he had the virus in a tweet shortly before 6am UK time.

The US president is 74 years old, putting him at higher risk of serious complications from the virus. A statement from the White House doctor said both the president and first lady are ‘well at this time’ but did not say if either have symptoms.

If Trump becomes seriously ill, there are constitutional procedures that would allow Vice President Mike Pence to assume power temporarily, just weeks before the November 3 election.

But if Trump suffers mild or no symptoms, the president would be able to tout his recovery as evidence that the virus is a less grave threat than many belief.

NASU, SSANU To Begin 14-Day Nationwide Warning Strike On Monday

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities(SSANU) and the Non- Academic Staff Union(NASU) have declared a warning strike that will commence next Monday, October 5, and last 14 days across public universities nationwide.

This was just as the federal government announced the reopening of all schools including universities six months after their closure due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The two groups jointly declared the industrial action on Friday on the platform of the Joint Action Committee(JAC).

Addressing newsmen shortly after their joint congress held at the University of Lagos(Akoka), the chairmen of SSANU and NASU of UNILAG branch, Messrs Olusola Sowunmi and Kehinde Ajibade, respectively said the strike is general and involve all public universities in the country.

They said the action is a directive from the national leadership of the two unions to all their branches nationwide.

They said they took the decision to press home their demands on contentious issues from the federal government.

They listed them to non-payment of arrears of their national minimum wage for 10 months, inconsistency in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System(IPPIS), non-payment of arrears of their earned allowance since 2012, non-showing of seriousness in renegotiating their 2009 agreement, neglect and poor funding of state universities, corruption and non-constitution of visitation panels as well as a usurpation of headship in non-academic matters by the academic staff as the contentious issues.

They said they are ready to commence on a full-blown and total strike should government fail to address these issues while their warning strike lasted.
