Labour Didn’t Betray Workers Over Strike – Lai Mohammed

0

The Federal Government has said organised labour neither compromised nor betrayed workers in the negotiations that led to the suspension of its planned strike.

DAILY POST had reported NLC and TUC had agreed to suspend the strike over the increase in petrol and electricity tariff on Monday morning after meeting with the federal government.

Following the development, Nigerians had condemned the action by labour, accusing its leaders of compromise and betrayal.

Speaking in an Interview with TVC on Friday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that labour was patriotic by suspending the strike.

He said after days of negotiations, labour agreed with the government that deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector is a necessity and not an option.

“The moment we lost as much as 60 per cent of our earnings and suffered a kind of shock in crude oil prices, we must deregulate.

“Between 2006 and 2019, we paid N10.413 trillion in fuel subsidies, an average of N743.8 billion per annum.

“The simple truth is that the government can no longer afford to subsidise PMS and the subsidy has never benefited the common man.

“What the two parties agreed upon are things that must be done to mitigate the effects of the deregulation on the workers, ’’ the minister said.

The minister also revealed that the government agreed with labour that it would facilitate the setting up of many modular refineries and rehabilitate existing regular refineries to cushion the effects of the deregulation.

According to him, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources would intensify efforts to ensure that Nigerians could get alternatives such as gas to power their vehicles and machinery.

IPPIS: We’ll Defend University Autonomy With Our Blood – ASUU

0

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, has vowed that they will protect university autonomy with the last drop of their blood.

Ogunyemi made this clear in a press statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The statement was titled “On President Buhari’s No IPPIS, No Salary” and Ogunyemi explained that the directive was meant for civil servants and not university lecturers.

The ASUU president revealed that on January 9, 2020, they reached an understanding with President Muhammadu Buhari, to develop the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), which will be sensitive to the operations of the university system, accommodate peculiarities and respect autonomy.

Ogunyemi also claimed ASUU has spent millions of naira to develop the UTAS, which has been presented to the Federal Ministry of Education.

“We are aware of the antics of bureaucrats, especially in the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, aimed at bringing universities under their control. ASUU will not fold its arms and watch the gains we made on the autonomy of Nigerian universities slip by.

“It took us several years of continuous struggle during the military to get here. So, let nobody hide under the name of President Muhammadu Buhari to attack the autonomy of public universities because Nigerian scholars are prepared to resist it to the last drop of their blood,” the statement read in part.

#ENDSARS Protests Gains Global Support From Celebrities, Organizations

Nationwide protests demanding proscription of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad have gathered momentum beyond Nigeria, with #EndSARS trending on Twitter in the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Canada.

The protest was also the most trended issue on Friday globally, according to a Tweet by @BBCAfrica, as Nigerians continued to demonstrate across the country amid violent clashes.

#EndSARS protest was reignited last week following the shooting of a youth reportedly in front of a hotel in Ughelli, Delta State, in broad daylight by some FSARS operatives who drove away his Lexus Jeep. The police have said the youth didn’t die.

The Nigeria Police Force consequently banned FSARS and other special tactical squads from carrying out routine stop and search.

Nigerians claimed that the police authorities had not shown enough commitment to reform the dreaded police unit over the years and called for its disbandment.

Despite the Force’s call for calm, the protest raged on in several parts of the country, including Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Delta, Imo, with Nigerians abroad joining the demonstration.

A Nigerian-British actor, John Boyega, on Friday was among the international celebrities who lent their voices to the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

The Star Wars actor also announced on Twitter that an anti-SARS protest would hold at the Nigeria High Commission in London, the United Kingdom, on Sunday.

Boyega posted an illustration via his handle, @JohnBoyega, showing protesters carrying placards with the inscriptions, “EndSARS, EndPoliceBrutality, and EndSARSProtest.”

“Nigeria High Commission, 9 Northumberland Avenue, London, WC2N 5BX. Closest station in Charing Cross. Sunday, 11th October; 12:00pm,” the actor tweeted about the upcoming protest.

As of 6pm on Friday, Boyega’s tweet had attracted over 9,500 likes and 7,700 retweets as many Nigerians living in London vowed to join in the protest.

The #EndSARS was also one of the most trended topics on Twitter on Friday with some Nigerians and non-Nigerians living in the UK, the United States, South Africa, and Canada, pledging to organise similar protests to amplify support for the calls to disband SARS – a police unit accused of serial human rights abuses.

In its tweet on Friday, @BBCAfrica noted that “The hashtag #EndSARS has been trending at no 1 worldwide today, as protestors continue to demand a notorious police unit in Nigeria disbanded.”

#ENDSARS: Buhari Is Weak, Incapacitated – Cleric

Leader of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Christ Ministry, Pastor Adewale Giwa, has described President Muhammadu Buhari as weak and incapacitated.

Giwa, in a statement to DAILY POST on Friday, said that one of the dangers of a “weak president” is Impunity of SARS.

There have been nationwide protests over the activities of SARS in the past few days and Giwa believes that those parading themselves as SARS officers are repentant armed robbers who disguise to be working for the police.

“It’s unfortunate that President Muhammadu Buhari has obviously become incapacitated. In all fairness, presidential weakness is bad for the nation.

“One of the dangers of a weak president is Impunity of SARS. Those parading themselves as SARS, to me, are repentant armed robbers who disguise to be working for the police.

“They have robbed Nigerians who struggle to survive under the bad administration of President Muhammadu Buhari over the years. The end has come to their operation.

“They should take them to Sambisa forest to combat members of Boko Haram instead of becoming nuisances on the streets.

“I strongly call on the Inspector General of Police to listen to the cries of Nigerians and disband SARS expeditiously.”

A young man identified as Kabiru on Friday beat security checks at the National Assembly complex to gain entry into the office of a member of the House of Representatives and carted away dollars and other valuable items in the process.

The incident happened at 2:30 pm when the suspect allegedly sneaked into another lawmaker’s office located on the fourth floor of the Assembly complex using a master key.

The suspect reportedly made away with the hard currency and some other office equipment including computers, photocopy machine and printer.

SaharaReporters gathered that Kabiru was a Special Assistant to one lawmaker from Adamawa State and was known by many people in the complex.

He was said to have been identified by security operatives, who analysed the footage before he was arrested.

At the time of filing this report, some lawmakers including Chairman, House Committee on Media and Publicity, Benjamin Kalu, security personnel were all sighted at the ground floor of the complex where the suspect was being held.

SaharaReporters gathered that there was pressure from the boss of the suspect to release him and bury the matter.

A CCTV footage obtained by SaharaReporters showed the suspect while carrying out the operation.

The suspect also confessed to the crime in another video seen by our correspondent.

It was gathered that a similar incident took place last week when the office of Hon. Ali Datti Yaku representing Bebeji Constituency of Kano State located on the third floor of the complex was burgled by unknown persons, who made away with valuable items.

#ENDSARS: “Old Woman, See Your Mates” – Wizkid Shades Buhari’s Aide

Nigerian music superstar, Ayo Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, has slammed Presidential social media aide, Lauretta Onochie over the ongoing nationwide #EndSARS protests.

The father of three took to his Twitter account on Friday to question her on why she’s not protesting like other mothers

“@Laurestar old woman…. “see your mates” God bless every woman #EndSARS”, he tweeted.

Wizkid’s tweet was in reaction to a march against SARS by hundreds of women in Lagos.

They asked that authorities proscribe SARS for their extra-judicial activities.

Stop killing our children, they are the leaders of tomorrow”, they chanted.

Recall that days ago, Wizkid called President Muhammadu Buhari an old man in reaction to a tweet from the Nigerian leader wishing United States President Donald Trump recovery after he tested positive for COVID-19.

I Am Off COVID-19 Drugs, Trump Claims

0

President Donald Trump said on Friday he is off all the medication he’s been taking to treat his COVID-19, telling talk radio host Rush Limbaugh he feels ‘perfect.’

Trump called into Limbaugh’s show for a ‘radio rally’ with the popular conservative radio star while he remains quarantined inside the White House because of his bout with the coronavirus.

‘I feel perfect,’ the president said at the top of his two-hour interview.

‘I mean I feel better now than I did two weeks ago. It’s crazy and I recovered immediately – almost immediately,’ he said.

He also said he was no longer taking any medication for COVID, a change from what he said the day before.

Trump said Thursday he was off all treatment except for dexamethasone, a powerful steroid that can cause insomnia, mania, mood swings, and rage. It has shown promise for treating patients with a severe case of COVID-19 who are getting supplemental oxygen.

Some doctors and Speaker Nancy Pelosi have expressed concern the steroid could affect the president’s mental state given its side effects, citing some erratic behavior from Trump, including a storm of tweets posted over two days and announcing on Twitter he was pulling out of the COVID relief talks, which sent the stock market tanking.

Now Trump said he’s no longer taking any medication for his coronavirus.

‘I’m not taking anything you know. I’m off any regimen that they gave me,’ he said.

He also claimed that an experimental anti-viral drug he took from Regeneron was a ‘cure’ for the coronavirus.

‘I’m telling you we have a cure, more than just a therapeutic we have a cure,’ the president told Limbaugh.

‘This is stuff that is so good. It just wiped out the virus and wiped it out,’ he claimed.

‘I’m telling you this is a, a total game-changer. It’s so good,’ he said. ‘This is the greatest of them all if this works out and I’m very sure it’s going to.’

Trump is just one of 10 people who received the drug, which is still in the experimental phase and is intended to boost antibodies to fight the infection.

His treatment regime included the dexamethasone, the experimental anti-viral drug from Regeneron, and the antiviral drug remdesivir.

His doctor said Wednesday that Trump has COVID antibodies in his system but that could be the result of the remdesivir. Antivirals work by injecting antibodies into the patient’s system to help the person fight the disease. It’s unclear what level of the drug Trump has received.

The White House announced seven days ago Trump tested positive for the disease. He left the hospital four days ago.

The president has been trying to project a picture of health after his diagnosis and as he trails Joe Biden in the polls with Election Day less than a month away.

Meanwhile, the White House said it hasn’t revealed the last time Trump tested negative for COVID because Trump didn’t sign away his privacy rights when he became president.

‘The president doesn’t check all of his HIPAA rights at the door just when he becomes president,’ White House Deputy Press Secretary Brian Morgenstern told MSNBC on Friday. ‘The doctors obviously share fulsome information with the president. The president shares a great deal of information with the American public.’

Any medical personnel treating any patient is prohibited by federal law from disclosing the person’s personal health information without consent under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPAA.

Dr. Sean Conley, the president’s personal physician who has been giving updates on Trump during his COVID treatment, notes he releases any information about the president’s condition with his patient’s approval.

‘I release the following information with the permission of President Donald J. Trump,’ is at the top of every memo Conley sends out on the president’s health.

Conley released Trump’s vital signs for the first time on Thursday since he became infected, showing a pulse, blood pressure, and blood oxygen level all within normal ranges.

Conley also stated that Trump’s medical team felt that he would be safe to return to public engagements by Saturday.

Saturday would mark nine days since Trump publicly announced testing positive for COVID-19.

Most scientists think that viral shedding continues for about 10 days after symptoms start in mild to moderate cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Soon after Conley’s memo was released, Trump’s campaign manager Bill Stepien issued a statement citing it and demanded that the Commission on Presidential Debates reverse its decision earlier in the day to hold next week’s presidential debate virtually.

Stepien, who himself tested positive for COVID-19 last week, said that Conley’s note confirms that Trump will be ready for public engagements ‘five full days before the originally scheduled debate in Miami on October 15.’

‘There is, therefore, no medical reason why the Commission on Presidential Debates should shift the debate to a virtual setting,’ he added, referring to the commission’s ruling earlier in the day.

‘The commission must stop protecting Joe Biden from this in-person debate and allow the event to proceed as it was agreed to months ago,‘ Stepien said, calling it an ‘obvious attempt to shield Biden from another shellacking like he got two weeks ago in Cleveland.’

The chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates said it is not reconsidering shifting the second debate from virtual back to in-person, despite Stepien’s request.

CPD Chair Frank Fahrenkopf said late Thursday that the nonpartisan group’s decision was not going to be reversed. That means the second debate is probably not going to happen at all after Trump said he would refuse to participate in a virtual debate.

Fahrenkopf says the group wanted to ‘protect the health and safety of all involved’ and that the decision was guided by the advice of the Cleveland Clinic, its heath partner for the 2020 debates.

Trump was first diagnosed with COVID-19 last Thursday and was moved to Walter Reed Medical Center on Friday before returning to the White House on Monday evening.

‘Since returning home, his physical exam has remained stable and devoid of any indications to suggested progression of illness,’ Conley said in a memo released by the White House on Thursday night.

‘Overall he’s responded extremely well to treatment, without evidence on examination of adverse therapeutic effects,’ Conley added.

‘Saturday will be day 10 since Thursday’s diagnosis, and based on the trajectory of advanced diagnostics the team has been conducting, I fully anticipate the President’s safe return to public engagements at that time.’

The memo showed Trump’s resting pulse was 69 beats per minute, which is considered a good rate for his age.

His blood pressure of 127/81 mm Hg is slightly elevated over normal levels but does not qualify a hypertensive.

Conley said that Trump’s breathing rate was normal and that his blood oxygen level was 96 to 98 percent without supplemental oxygen, which is well within the normal range.

Curiously, the memo did not include Trump’s body temperature. Last week, Trump reportedly spiked a fever, and his blood oxygen level dropped alarmingly, leading to his transfer to Walter Reed.

The memo also did not say whether Trump had tested negative for COVID-19.
