Population Of Extremely Poor People In Nigeria Exceeds 102 Million – NBS

There are indications that Nigeria’s poverty level may have further deteriorated as the latest reports of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, NECA, shows a 10 percentage point rise in the number of the extremely poor in the country against the 2019 report of the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

NECA’s report says that the number of citizens in extreme poverty now stands at an estimated 102 million, representing 50 per cent of Nigeria’s estimated population of about 205 million, as against the 40 per cent reported by NBS in October last year.

*This comes at the backdrop of the World Bank forecast that global extreme poverty is expected to rise in 2020 for the first time in over 20 years as the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic compounds the forces of conflict and climate change, which were already slowing down progress in poverty reduction efforts around the world.

“Financial Vanguard’s findings from the data obtained from NECA revealed that the total number of people living in extreme poverty in Nigeria now stands at 15 per cent of the total number of people living in extreme poverty worldwide.

“In the latest annual report of NECA, its Acting President, Taiwo Adeniyi, said: “With COVID-19, the figure could only be imagined. It is practically impossible to separate unemployment from poverty. The longer people stay out of employment or any reasonable means of income, the higher the rate of poverty.

“Two years after it was reported that Nigeria had surpassed India as the nation with the highest number of people living in extreme poverty across the world, the country’s poverty ranking continues to surge.”

*Adeniyi stated further: “The World Poverty Clock, a web tool based on World Data Lab’s global poverty model, estimated in June 2018 that 86.9 million Nigerians are living on less than $1.90 a day. That number has increased by over 15 million in the past two years, according to new figures published by World Data Lab on May 26, 2020.”

*The NBS in a report about poverty and inequality from September 2018 to October 2019, had said 40 per cent of people in the continent’s most populous country live below its poverty line of N137,430 ($381.75) a year. It said that represents 82.9 million people.

“In Nigeria, 40.1 per cent of the total population was classified as poor. In other words, on average, four out of 10 individuals in Nigeria has real per capita expenditures below N137,430 ($352) per year,” it added.

The NBS said it did not include Borno, the state worst hit by the decade-long Boko Haram armed uprising, because many areas there were not safe to reach.
According to the report, 52 per cent of people in rural areas live in poverty, compared with 18 per cent in urban parts of the country.
It stated: “The highest poverty levels were in the northwest state of Sokoto, where 87.7 per cent of people live under the poverty line compared with 4.5 per cent in commercial hub Lagos state, which had the lowest rate.”

Federal Lawmaker Presents Bill To Legalize Cultivation Of Marijuana In Nigeria

A bill for the legalisation and usage of non-toxicant cannabis plants for medical and scientific research is presently before the House of Representatives.

The bill, which was presented by Rep. Princess Miriam Onuoha, representing Okigwe North of Imo State, has passed the second reading.

This was disclosed by Dr. Tonye Jaja Clinton, a legal practitioner, during a media parley organized by Grow Cann Africa in Abuja on the benefits and opportunities of cannabis plants and CBD oil.

He said once the bill becomes law, Nigeria has a lot to gain economically.

American Singer, Trey Songz Blasts Buhari Over #ENDSARS

American singer, Tremaine Aldon Neverson, popularly known as ‘Trey Songz has taken a swipe at President Mohammadu Buhari over his alleged nonchalant attitude towards the call for an end to police brutality in Nigeria.

ABN TV recalls that there had been a nationwide protest against the unlawful activities of the officials from the Special anti-robbery Squad, SARS.

The protest, however, attracted a lot of reactions from people all over the world with many celebrities joining the call.

Following the nationwide outrage, Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector-General of Police, on Sunday dissolved the unit, ordering all officers and men of the now defunct Special anti-robbery Squad to be redeployed with immediate effect.

Reacting, Trey Songz in a tweet via his official Twitter account blasted Buhari for being mute over such sensitive issue for a very long time.

He also faulted the new policy released by the IGP, stating that re-employing the same men into other offices wasn’t a good plan.

He wrote “The people saying you full of shit fam.

“Reading this article looks as though they just gon re-employ these same officers in different positions. BULLSHIT!!!”

Respect Protesters’ Rights – UK Tells FG

Catriona Laing, the British high commissioner to Nigeria, has called on the federal government to respect the rights of its citizens to protest.

In a post on her verified Twitter handle on Sunday, Liang also commended the federal government’s decision to disband the special anti-robbery squad (SARS).

She further urged protesters to remain peaceful amid the protests.

Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police (IGP), had dissolved the police unit after days of protests across the country.

Laing also said the IGP’s commitment to ensure accountability for human rights violations is necessary in restoring the people’s confidence in the police.

“Hearing reports of violence affecting ongoing protests. Urge authorities to respect the right to protest and protesters to remain peaceful.”

I Prophesied Akeredolu’s Re-election – Primate Ayodele

The leader of INRI evangelical spiritual church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, on Sunday, reacted to the re-election of Rotimi Akeredolu as Governor of Ondo State.

Primate Ayodele said the re-election of Akeredolu was a fulfilment of his prophecy on the governor returning to office for a second term.

In a statement he forwarded to DAILY POST, the clergyman said he made a series of prophecies concerning the Ondo State election, stressing that “I started talking about it long before the party primaries in May.”

According to Primate Ayodele: “The much anticipated Ondo State election took place yesterday Saturday, 10th Of October 2020 and it has seen the candidate of the All progressive Congress, Rotimi Akeredolu becoming victorious as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC).’

Rotimi Akeredolu won the election, beating his two major opponents, Eyitayo Jegede of PDP and his deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi of ZLP.

“I made it known that it is only Akeredolu that can give victory to APC and for PDP, It is only Eyitayo Jegede that can challenge Akeredolu

“The only viable candidate PDP can produce is Eyitayo Jegede.

“He is the only one that can beat all other candidates in the general election.”

Recounting his prophecy, Primate Ayodele said: “Jegede has taken a wrong move and for this reason, he will lose the election to Akeredolu.

 

Abia APC Rejects ABSIEC Nomination Fees For LG Elections

The All Progressives Congress, (APC), Abia State chapter, has rejected the N500,000 and N100,000 fees for chairmanship and councilorship nomination fees fixed by Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, for the December 18 council polls in the state.

Addressing party faithful in Umuomainta Mbawsi in Isiala Ngwa North council, State chairman of the party, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa who described the fees as outrageous explained that the Abia APC frowns at the N500,000.00 for LGA  polls and would go to every length to challenge it.

Nwankpa warned that ABSIEC is not a revenue yielding agency but a service delivery one which is provided for in the state budget. He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “look towards the party in Abia as lots of APC members that produced the President have become disillusioned and angry.

He reiterated the resolve of the party to take over the Abia Government House, come 2023 and assured members that the party are going to be transparent in all it does in the state.

“The party will not impose any candidate on members. There will be no imposition of candidates.”

Gold Deposits In Zamfara Belongs To FG – Minister For Mines Reminds Zamfara Governor

Olamilekan Adegbite, minister of mines and steel development, who issued the warning on Friday, said mineral products remain exclusively that of the federal government.

Zamfara government on Tuesday said it started its gold reserve to reduce dependence on federal allocations.

Rabiu Garba, the state commissioner for finance, told journalists that, though, there was a federal government ban on mining activities in the country, “the state government was able to purchase the commodity from licensed miners”.
“At the moment, we have a pure gold reserve of over 30 kilos and as time goes by, we will continue to invest in this regard so that, like other states and other nations, we will be having our mineral reserves and ours will be in gold,” Garba said.

“When the ban is lifted and mining activities resume fully, we are hopeful that we will be receiving royalties from miners while the federal government will also be giving us something.”

Joseph Onu Silas, a lawyer, had accused the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) of trading in gold with the state government, seeking the cancellation of the purchase of gold worth N5 billion from Zamfara by the apex bank.
But while briefing the press on the forthcoming 5th Nigerian mining week, Adegbite said what the state government is doing is right but the portrayal to the public is wrong.

“I had a meeting with the Zamfara people yesterday or day before yesterday, they need to get their narrative right to the public,” Adegbite said.

“We have what we call private mineral buying centres, we issue licences, in fact, anybody that is interested should come to us and once you meet the criteria, we give you a licence to purchase the mineral and that is the angle the Zamfara Government is exploiting.

“From their own fund, they are buying gold from their people and I spoke with the governor, you need to explain these to the people properly. It’s not as if they are cornering the resources that belong to the federal government.

“All mineral resources in-country are vested in the federal government and that is in the exclusive list and that stays. And the right royalty should be paid to the federal government.

“People feel that some parts of the nation are cornering the wealth of the nation to themselves which belongs to all of us and I will always say this, everybody has partaken in the lunch of the Niger Delta’s people, we have taken from the oil and gas and it has been used to develop this country and the mineral wealth of this country will also be used collectively to develop this country and not exclusively by one section.”

The state government has denied the allegations against it.

Zailani Baffa, the spokesperson to Bello Matawalle, the state governor, said the state government is not directly mining the gold by itself.

“It will rather purchase the Zamfara gold from the mining companies registered by the Federal Government in the state,” Baffa said in a statement.

He also said the CBN did not enter into any trade agreement with the state government as claimed by the lawyer.

“The fact is that the CBN, just like in agriculture, is willing to invest in mining, as part of its Anchor Borrowers’ Programme whereby the apex bank will invest an amount for the state government to supply it with the gold as proceeds of the investment,” he said.

“This is aimed at boosting the mining sector in the country which is within the provisions of the scheme.”

Identify, Prosecute SARS Officers Involved In Rights Abuse, Murder – Gbajabiamila Tells IGP

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to ensure officers of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) who are involved in human rights abuses are punished.

“The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) must act to identify and punish those operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) involved in the most severe cases of abuse of rights, brutality, and murder of Nigerian citizens,” the Speaker was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesman, Lanre Lasisi on Sunday.

“These steps are necessary to assure the Nigerian people that the announced dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is sincere and well-intentioned, and not merely meant to quell the ongoing protests across the country”.

Gbajabiamila made the call a few hours after the IGP announced that the infamous police unit had been dissolved, in reaction to widespread protests by Nigerians who called for him to do just that.

The Speaker considers the dissolution of SARS a “necessary response” by the government and he commended the IGP and President Muhammadu Buhari for heeding the people’s demand about the unit, which has gained notoriety over the years for extortion, brutality, and other forms of human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings.

He also believes that the development and the broader, ongoing reforms of the police that will follow, are a testament to the passion and resilience of a generation of Nigerians who determined not to accept or tolerate injustice in whatever form it takes.

While the protests were ongoing, there were still pockets of harassment, violence, and even the killing of a young man, Jimoh Isiaq in Ogbomoso.

Expressing his displeasure over these, Gbajabiamila noted that there is now a pressing need to have an independent system for monitoring the actions of the police.

As part of support, he had last week, promised to meet with the Nigerian Bar Association and members of civil society groups among others, to ensure that structural reforms and policies are put in place to end the years-long menace.

Reiterating that promise, he said the House will continue its work to legislate lasting solutions to the problems of policing in Nigeria.

Specifically, the Speaker promised that the green chamber will be meeting with the aforementioned groups “to begin joint efforts at developing a legislative proposal”.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Lanre Lasisi, Gbajabiamila said the dissolution of the unit of the police was a necessary response by the government to the outcry arising from their multiple documented excesses across the country.

The Speaker also commended Nigerians, particularly the millions of young people at home and abroad, who saw a wrong and sought to make it right, who saw injustice and acted to put an end to it.

According to him, the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), and the broader, ongoing reforms of the police that will follow, are a testament to the passion and resilience of a generation of Nigerians who determined not to accept or tolerate injustice in whatever form it takes.

The Speaker also called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar Adamu to take practical steps to support and enforce this policy pronouncement.

“These steps are necessary to assure the Nigerian people that the announced dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is sincere and well-intentioned, and not merely meant to quell the ongoing protests across the country.

“The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) must also act to identify and punish those operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) involved in the most severe cases of abuse of rights, brutality and murder of Nigerian citizens.”

Gbajabiamila noted with displeasure the police’s manhandling of the some protesters, who came out in numbers to protest peacefully.

The Speaker wishes to assure all Nigerians that the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) will not preclude the ongoing efforts by the House of Representatives to effect reforms of the police through legislation.

“There is still a pressing need to have an independent system for monitoring police actions and holding police officers to proper account for failures to follow the law and the police code. The House will continue its work to legislate lasting solutions to the problems of policing in Nigeria.”

In support of these efforts, the House will this week meet with the national leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and select civil society organisations to begin joint efforts at developing a legislative proposal.

“Whatever legislation emerges from this collaboration will be presented to the House within the 30-day timeline announced by Speaker Gbajabiamila at the special session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday 7th October 2020.”

The House had on Wednesday rose against the brutality of SARS officers, passing some vital resolutions on the matter and demanded the IGP to take decisive action against the brutality and human rights violation by SARS officers and report the said action to the Green Chamber within three weeks.

The lawmakers also requested the police chief to produce a comprehensive record of disciplinary and/or judicial action taken against the officers accused of abuse of power in the past five years.
Equally rising from the resolutions, the House asked the IGP to produce an immediate plan for identifying and compensating the victims of the brutality and abuses.

With regards to reforming the police, the House resolved to take immediate steps to amend existing laws and the 1999 Constitution to excise Section 215 (5) and replace it with provisions that ensure judicial review of police actions are enshrined and protected by the constitution.

Furthermore, the House resolved to establish a framework for holding individual members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) accountable for their conduct in the course of performing their lawful duties, including criminal and civil liabilities.

It was equally resolved that the Nigeria Police Force would be allowed to bear civil liability for failures in their conduct and operational procedures that lead to violations of citizens’ rights.
