BREAKING: Channels Television Emerges Best TV Station

Channels Television has emerged winner of the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA) for Best Television Station Of The Year for a record 13th time.

The award-winning station bagged the honour which recognises media excellence in Nigeria on Sunday at a ceremony which held at the Muson Centre in Lagos.

Channels Television’s General Manager (Special Duties), Mr Steve Judo, led a team of staff members to the event to receive the award on behalf of the organisation.

Others in attendance include the Controller of Programmes, Mr Ambrose Okoh, and Channels TV Presenter, Gimba Umar.

Meanwhile, Channels Television’s political correspondent, Seun Okinbaloye, won the Television Programme Presenter of the Year.

The award is one of the numerous recognitions Channels Television has received in Nigeria and globally for its programming, with an audience of more than 20 million people within and outside the country.

Prior to the latest feat, Channels Television last won the Best Station of the Year in 2017.

This is in addition to claiming the prize in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Elsewhere, TVC’s Mike Okwoche won the Television Newscaster of the Year.

In the print category, the Punch Newspaper beat the Guardian Newspaper and Daily Trust to win the Babatunde Jose Prize for the Newspaper of the Year.

But Abraham Ogbodo of the Guardian Newspaper bagged the Dele Giwa Prize for Editor of the Year, beating Nasir Abubakar of Daily Trust and the Punch’s Martin Ayankola.

In a similar development, a former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, as well as a marketing communications practitioner, Biodun Shobanjo, were recognised for a professional life dedicated to media excellence and service to the nation.

Earlier, the chairman of NMMA Panel of Assessors, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, gave an assessment of the entries submitted.

He noted that there were higher entries compared to last year and stressed the need for thorough editing and quality control by editors.

Professor Akinfeleye decried that some of the entries submitted for various categories lacked depth, focus, concern, and news angle.

The awards were handed out in more than 51 categories, with a majority in the print category.

The event was well attended by dignitaries, as well as young and veteran media practitioners in the country.

Newly Married Couples Allegedly Commit Suicide Over Wedding Debt

Two families in Kisumu are mourning their two children who together committed suicide 4 days after their beautiful wedding.

According to Sources, the newly married couples allegedly killed themselves because of the huge debt they incurred after their wedding.

Mr. & Mrs. Odipo left a note that they were stressed & strained because the beautiful wedding they had, left them with a debt of Ksh 7.9 Million.

In the letter, they also stated that they could not go to honeymoon as planned.

They blamed those who attended their wedding of coming only to feast with no gifts.”

We are embarrassed & ashamed that we could not start our new life in happiness because you people did not make us happy as we expected, ” the letter reads.

A family member who spoke to The Daily Statesman said the wedding was held in a five-star hotel which he declined to mention the hotel’s name.

She also revealed that 90% of those invited were special guests VVIPs & VIPs pointing out the two couples used to brag how their guests will bring gifts in Millions of cash money.

She also said 3 choppers were hired one for each family & another for the couple.

A neighbor to the husband said he once told him during the wedding preparation that he will use all his savings to finance the wedding since his guests are millionaires who will each come with sh1.5 Million.

He added that those who attended the wedding only brought flowers & Best of Luck cards.

I Will Build A Church As Big As Ibadan Before I Die – Pastor Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, says he will not die until he has built a church auditorium as big as Ibadan.

Adeboye spoke at the Holy Ghost Congress 2019 of the church, saying that his dream was to built such a massive auditorium for the RCCG.

The cleric, popularly known as ‘Daddy G.O’ was speaking on the topic: “The Power of Inspiration’ on the third day of the Holy Ghost Congress 2019 holding at the Redemption Campground, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The man of God said emphatically that no one should believe that he is dead until he had built the auditorium as big as Ibadan.

In his words: “If anybody tells you Pastor Adeboye is dead, don’t believe them because God is going to build us the auditorium as big as Ibadan. Until that is done, I’m not going anywhere.”

A lady whose identity could not be ascertained has allegedly battered her house help, inflicting a serious injury on her head for failing to feed her child.

According to one Tochi, a resident of Onitsha where the incident took place, he met the tortured young girl on the street roaming after her madam made the home uncomfortable for her.

“This child’s name is Kaosisochukwu, met her on my way to buy akara this Sunday morning.

“These are injuries inflicted on her by the woman she is currently staying with.

“Her offense was that she didn’t feed her madam child her afternoon pap” he posted on Facebook.

He, therefore, called on the human right community to come to the aid of the victim.

Gynaecologist urges women not to remove their pubic hair

A gynaecologist is urging women not to remove their pubic hair.

Dr Jen Gunter, author of The Vagina Bible, warns waxing or shaving creates “microscopic trauma” that can lead to infections.

While the purpose of pubic hair is somewhat of a mystery, going “au naturel” is thought to protect the skin by acting as a barrier against the outside world.

Getting a Brazilian may also reduce sexual pleasure, with pubic hair being connected to nerve endings that might help arousal, Dr Gunter added.

Pubic hair “grooming” has almost become the norm, with many blaming the porn industry.

Scientists from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), asked more than 3,300 women about their downstairs grooming.

Of which, 83.8% claimed to wax, shave or epilate their pubic hair, with just 16.2% leaving it intact.

“Hygiene” was the most commonly reported reason (59%) for women removing their hair.

But Dr Gunter warns waxing, shaving or “sugaring” – mixing sugar, lemon juice and water to create a wax-like gel – may do more harm than good.

“You are causing microscopic trauma to the skin,” she told the BBC.

The gynaecologist added she sees women with cuts, grazes and even infections when hair removal goes awry.

“Pubic hair has a function, it is probably a mechanical barrier and protection for the skin,” she said.

“It may also have a role in sexual functioning because each pubic hair is attached to a nerve ending, that’s why it hurts to remove it.”

The role of pubic hair is not fully understood.

Most experts think it is involved in the release of pheromones, chemicals that trigger arousal.

Pheromones are thought to be “get trapped in pubic hair when glands release an odourless secretion on the skin that combines with bacteria decomposed by the secretion of (other) glands”, according to an expert from Columbia University in New York.

This produces a scent that varies from person-to-person.

Some studies suggest women are attracted to pheromones that differ significantly from their own because it suggests genetic diversity, the expert added.

Other theories as to pubic hair’s purpose include warmth or helping the vagina stay “clean”.

“Pubic hair prevents dirt and particles from entering the vagina,” the Columbian scientist reported.

Critics argue, however, if warmth was the reason, men would surely have more hair along their penis and around their scrotum.

The protection theory also falls short because men do not have similar cushioning around the opening of their urethra.

Humans are thought to have removed their hair as far back as prehistoric times.

“Tweezers” made of shells have even been found in ancient caves.

The Egyptians also reportedly associated body hair with uncleanliness.

Removing pubic hair may have some benefits, by protecting against body lice.

The tiny insects live on coarse human hair, like that found around the genitals, according to the NHS.

Body lice spread via skin-to-skin contact, usually sex.

As well as thriving on the genitals, the insects can also set up home on the armpits, legs, chest, abdomen, back, face, and even the eyebrows and eyelashes.

Basically, anywhere with hair, aside from the scalp.

These days, women are less likely to remove their pubic hair out of a fear of lice.

“The increased prevalence of pornography that depicts bare genitalia, popular magazines and television are primary drivers of the trend in the United States,” the UCSF scientists wrote in the journal JAMA Dermatology.

In their study, 875 women (31.5%) claimed they groomed their pubic hair because they felt it “made their genitals more attractive”.

And 586 (21.1%) said it is their “partner’s preference”.

Asked when they would remove their pubic hair, most (55.6%) said before sex.

This was followed by before a holiday (45.7%) and to prepare for a “healthcare professional visit” (40%).

For those who still want to go hair-free “down there”, Dr Gunter urges them to use a clean razor and shave in the direction of the hair.

Going “against the grain” increases the risk of ingrown hairs, which can become infected.

And for those who go for a wax, ensure the technician does not “double dip” the wooden sticks used.

This could spread bacteria between clients, Dr Gunter added.

Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, has debunked rumors making the rounds that he is nursing governorship ambition in 2023, describing the rumor as fake news and the handiwork of his detractors who are deliberately spreading the falsehood just to distract him.

In a statement released to newsmen on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Jude Ndukwe, the Speaker said, “My attitude towards politics is same as my decision in 2015 when I turned down the offer of being Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.

My detractors who are pushing these false narratives in a bid to be politically relevant, or seeking to be governor, should seek relevance through positive means and not by continually propagating falsehood against me in the name of a non-existent 2023 governorship ambition. I am not interested.

A slay queen in Abuja has been butchered to pieces by suspected ritualists.

The ritual killers reduced the beautiful lady to mere body parts as the body was completely dismembered with head, hands and legs found scattered in different directions.

This was shared by a Facebook user, Ronald Agbum on his page.

‘Ooh my God wanders shall never end this girl was murdered and butchered at Durumi by unknown identity. If you know her come to Asokoro District Hospital’s motuary,’ the Facebook user wrote.

Doctors Must Treat Gunshot, Stab Victims Without Report — Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has restated that doctors and hospital personnel are mandated to treat gunshot and stab victims without requesting for any police report.

The Police said every medical facility in the country was free to receive and treat victims of gunshot wounds with or without Police clearance, but are duty-bound to report to the nearest Police station after commencing treatment of the victim.

Recently, a young lady allegedly died in Lagos from her wound after being stabbed by armed robbers because a medical facility refused to attend to her without a Police report, although the hospital later denied refusing to treat her for any such reason.

Speaking in an interview, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr. Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), assured that the Police would not in any way operationally or administratively come in-between medical practitioners and the discharge of their fundamental responsibility, The Guardian reports.

He said, “By the laws of our land, victims of gunshot wounds, victims of road accidents, victims of life stabs or any other type of stabbing do not require a Police report before being treated by medical personnel. That position is very clear.

“The only requirement of the law as regards the treatments of gunshot wounds is that medical doctors, paramedics or other health workers are required to inform the Police after treatments have commenced. In other words, this requirement does not in any way preclude or bar them from initiating medical treatments.

“Remember that fundamentally, the core duty of doctors and other professionals in the health sector is to save life.”

According to Mba, “It is sheer mischief, ignorance, disinformation or misinformation for anyone to say that you must get a Police report before you are treated as a victim of a gunshot wound. The requirement is after the doctors must have saved life and stabilised the victim, they are required to report after treatment and not before treatment.

“That requirement is intended to avoid a scenario where a suspected armed robber, cultist, kidnapper or even a terrorist, after sustaining a gunshot wound during an engagement with the Police or other law enforcement officers, gets treated and probably continues in his criminal activities.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Saturday, December 14, 2019, moved to the next level in fulfilling the terms of the court sentence passed on former Abia State governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

The anti-graft agency said it has begun marking properties belonging to him to seek reparation for the N7.65b stolen from the Abia state treasury..

The marking is to ensure that the properties are not dissipated, following the December 5, 2019 order of Justice Muhammed Idris sitting at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos that Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, be wound up and all assets forfeited to the Federal Government.

Kalu, who is the Senator representing Abia North in the National Assembly, had been arraigned alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Udeh Udeogu, his Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House, over an amended 39-count charge bordering on conspiring and diverting the sum of N7.65bn from the coffers of the state.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them by the EFCC, thereby leading to their full trial.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, called 19 witnesses and tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence by the court.

The defendants, however, testified on their behalf of themselves during the trial.

The parties, during the proceedings on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, adopted their final written addresses.

In his final submission, the prosecution counsel, Jacobs, urged the judge to jail the defendants, saying the prosecution had proved the allegations against them.

Jacobs also urged the court to wind up the company as provided by the Law and all its assets forfeited to the Federal Government.

However, the defence counsel urged the court to “dismiss the charges, acquit and discharge” their clients.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Idris found the defendants guilty on all counts.

Justice Idris held that the prosecution had established its case against the defendants.

The Judge further held that “the case was conclusively investigated, as the prosecution conducted thorough investigations.”

Justice Idris, therefore, convicted and sentenced the first defendant,
Kalu to five years imprisonment on counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11; three years on counts 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33; 12 years on counts 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38 and five years on count 39.

The second defendant was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment on counts 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32 and 10 years on counts 34, 37, 38 and 39.

Justice Idris further held that “In respect of the third convict, Slok Nigeria Limited, an order is hereby made that the company shall hereupon and without further assurances, but for this order, be wound up and all its assets and properties forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

We Are Not Secret Society, Ogboni Fraternity Opens Up On Activities

Leader of the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity (ROF), Chief Francis Meshioye, has again debunked public perception that the fraternity was a secret society.

Addressing newsmen in Lagos during flag off of 2019 Founders’ Day Celebration of ROF, Meshioye, said there was nothing sinister in the activities of the fraternity.

“We are far from being a secret society; we are a registered entity that abides with the laws of the land and our objectives are to promote positive values, truth, justice and cultural heritage,” he said.

He explained that contrary to beliefs in some quarters, there was nothing secret or sinister about the fraternity, saying it was founded for the good of the society.

Meshionye further explained that the fraternity was actually founded in 1914 by a Christian, Deacon Jacobson Ogunbiyi, saying the initial objective was to promote Christian values among the people.

He added that the group was later expanded to accommodate people of other faiths, hence the change in name from Ogboni Fraternity to Reformed Ogboni Fraternity.

Meshioye said a number of distinguished Nigerians, dead and living, were members of the group, emphasising that the fraternity was strictly for positive values.

He said that it was note-worthy that the founding fathers of ROF were part of those who fought for decolonisation of Nigeria, developed such establishments as the civil service, judiciary and many functional post-colonial institutions.

He listed some of them as late Sir Adetokunbo Ademola, late Chief Ladoke Akintola and late Sir Adeyemo Alakija.

The ROF leader said every Nigerian of good character could join the group as the fraternity was not for those who were seeking quick wealth.

According to Meshioye, it is important for people to understand what the group stands for, urging Nigerians to embrace the virtues of the fraternity

“The Reformed Ogboni Fraternity (ROF) has the ultimate objective of promoting good values, love discipline, not only in Nigeria but in other parts of the world wherever her members finds him or herself.

“There is a clear distinction between ROF as a fraternity and any other forms of organisations.

“Our fraternity compels her members to imbibe the fundamental injunction of ”do unto others as you wish others to do unto you.

“However, the fraternity had to overcome many challenges that were rooted in misinterpretations of what we stand for,” Meshioye said.

He said the celebration of ROF’s 2019 Founders’ Day was to promote the ideals of the fraternity and show the world that the group was all positive.
