A grandma has been arrested by police in Nigeria’s southern state of Rivers following reports she gave two grandchildren a peppered water bath and thereafter chained them, stripped.

She then locked up the female kids, aged 7 and 8 up like a jailor.

According to the police, the 52-year-old woman, simply called Mama Vera, gave the kids the horrendous punishment because they ate garri, a popular staple made from cassava and mixed it with sugar, like a meal without her consent.

The incident happened at Mgbuoba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Witnesses said concerned neighbours had to break into the house when they heard the wailing children calling for help.

The police who arrested the woman is also accusing her of denying the children their rights to go to school.

A lawyer, Precious Johnmark, who also witnessed the incident is calling on the Rivers State Police Command and the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, to follow the case and ensure the prosecution of Mama Vera for allegedly violating the rights of the girls.

SERAP demands release of Shehu Sani

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately release former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani.

Operatives of EFCC on Thursday reportedly invaded the Abuja residence of Senator Shehu Sani over alleged extortion.

It was gathered that the EFCC officials stormed the apartment in Wuse, Abuja at about 3:30 pm on Wednesday to look for incriminating evidence against the former Kaduna senator.

This is following arrest of Sani last week for alleged extortion of $20,000 from the owner of ASD Motors.

The government critic, who represented Kaduna central senatorial district between 2015 and 2019, allegedly collected money from Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors, promising to pass it on to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Reacting, in a post on its official Twitter page, SERAP called on EFCC to charge Sani with a recognizable criminal offence rather than prolonging his detention.

The group noted that the continued detention of Sani without charge was against the principle of being innocent until proven guilty.

SERAP, therefore, urged the anti-graft agency to release Sani on bail pending investigation.

The post reads: “EFCC should immediately release activist Shehu Sani detained on allegations of extortion or charge him with a recognizable criminal offence.

“By prolonging his detention without charge or trial, Mr Sani is being treated like a convicted criminal, in violation of national and international law.

“The continued detention of Mr Sani without charge is against the principle of being innocent until proven guilty.

“Nigeria is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Article 9 of the ICCPR states that “anyone who is arrested shall be brought promptly before a judge or other officer authorized by law to exercise judicial power.”

“There are similar provisions in the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).

“The EFCC should promptly investigate any allegations against Mr Sani and release him on bail pending the conclusion of any such investigation.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara, on Thursday said N515m was spent on getting political thugs off the streets of Maiduguri metropolis.

The governor’s revelation came even as the United Nations Development Programme said it was buying into the state government’s “cash for sanitation initiative,” a programme which pays each political thug N30,000 monthly for six months after signing a bond not to be involved in political thuggery again.

Umara had in July 2019 launched a “cash for sanitation” programme through which 2,862 registered members of political thuggery groups were being paid N30,000 between July and December (six months) to abandon thuggery and clean the streets.

When the payment ended in December, the state government subsequently ordered the arrest and prosecution of anyone caught involved in political thuggery.

Speaking at the re-launch of the scheme on Thursday, Umara said the 2,862 youths were drawn from the 15 wards in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and six wards of Jere.

The governor said N515m was spent in making the monthly payments to the youth and that payments were made directly into individual’s accounts.

He said this was done in addition to getting the youth to acquire vocational skills so that they could become productive.

Meanwhile, the UNDP’s Representative in Borno, Yoshiaki Noguchi, while expressing the interest of the UN agency in the programme said the payment of N30,000 would be extended to the participants in the scheme for another three months.

Okoro was reported to have died on Thursday when he came back from work.
