Border closure: Customs rakes in N6b daily

0

Nigeria rakes in between N5 billion and N6 billion daily from imports since the closure of its land borders with neighbouring countries.

Prior to the closure in August 2019, daily duty collections hovered between N4 billion and N5 billion, said the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos on Tuesday.

The NCS Comptroller-General Col. Hammed Ali (retd.) attributed the rise to increased activities at the nation’s seaports.

”The NCS daily collection before the border closure ranged between N4 to N5 billion but now, the NCS collects N5billion to N6 billion daily as a result of the rise in activities at the nation’s seaports,” Ali said on Tuesday at a forum on the “impact of land border closure on the Nigerian economy.”

The forum was organized by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and the support of the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) in Lagos.

The Customs boss, who was represented by the ACG/Zonal Co-ordinator, Zone A, KayCee Ekekezie, also said the border closure had led to a 30 per cent drop in fuel hitherto supplied by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for local consumption.

He added that the sums being realized from the ports would help the Federal Government provide more infrastructures and add fillip to critical sectors of the economy.

His words: “This (money) will be used to build more infrastructure and develop critical sectors of the nation’s economy. The border drill has also curbed the diversion of petroleum products from Nigeria to our neighbouring countries. NNPC records show a 30 per cent drop in fuel consumption, which means that we have been subsidizing fuel for neighbouring countries.”

Ali also stated that before the border closure, NCS had engaged the customs of neighbouring countries severally, drawing their attention to the need to comply with ECOWAS protocols on the transit of goods and persons.

He said: “The protocol demands that when a transit container berths at a seaport, the receiving country is mandated to escort same without tampering with the seal to the border of the destination country.

”Unfortunately, experience has shown that our neighbours do not comply with the protocol, rather they break the seals of containers on transit to Nigeria at their ports and transload the goods in open trucks which belongs to their country. The trucks will, in turn, make entry into Nigeria and trans load same onto Nigerian trucks.”

The President of LCCI, Mrs Toki Mabogunje, said the border closure has had positive and negative implications for the economy.

“We have seen an appreciable increase in domestic rice and poultry products production and decrease in fuel smuggling to neighbouring countries. The directive paid off for the NCS as revenue generated by the agency increased to N1.34 trillion in 2019 from N1.2 trillion in 2019” she said.

On the flip side, she said, the closure has triggered inflationary pressures through rising food prices. She added that food inflation continues to uptrend, hitting a record 14.7 per cent in December 2019, the highest in 20 months.

She said the policy had also led to unplanned losses for manufacturers, especially those who export their products by road.

The Advisor, Borderless Alliance, Mr Caleb Omoyiola, said the policy had resulted in increased internally generated revenue, rise in consumption of local products and reduction in smuggling.

On the negative side, according to him, is a breach of ECOWAS protocols/rules of integration and free movement of persons, goods and transport within the region.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Muhammad Babandede, has said that only President Muhammadu Buhari could determine when the borders would reopen.

Babandede spoke at a news conference on NIS infrastructural projects validation and execution nationwide on in Abuja yesterday.

He said: “The borders are partially closed and this is in line with the ECOWAS rules where you must have valid travel documents.

“You must enter through legal routes and with valid documents and not illegally.”

Babandede emphasised that the visa on arrival policy was not at variance with the border drills, saying that the increase in the number of visas from six to 79 was to enable appropriate endorsement based on request.

He said that it was also to cover a wide range of professions, skills, and areas of expertise and a platform for reciprocating in line with diplomatic practices globally.

“The visa is not free, payment is done online. Biometric capture is carried out at the point of issuance and due diligence is observed in a manner that will not compromise national security and in line with international best practices,” he added.

“My Lord, one day this woman will stab me to death if you don’t divorce us” – Man cries out in court

0

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Tuesday granted a request by a businessman, Mr Daniel Abiodun, to divorce his wife, Temitope, for always threatening his life with a knife.

Dissolving the union, the President of the Court, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, said that since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court was left with no option than to grant him his wish.

“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Mr Daniel Abiodun and Mrs Temitope Abiodun dissolved today. Both of you henceforth cease to be husband and wife.

“Each of you should go your separate ways unmolested; the court wishes both of you well in your future endeavour,” he said.

Koledoye ordered Daniel to be responsible for their children’s’ feeding, medical and school fees.

The 56-year-old businessman had earlier approached the court to terminate the 16 years marriage, accusing his wife of threatening to kill him.

“My wife always picks a knife to stab me whenever we have any misunderstanding. Whenever I run for my dear life, she will chase me with the knife.

“I can no longer sleep with my two eyes closed. I am afraid she may stab me to death one day and I don’t want to die,” Daniel told the court.

According to the petitioner, Temitope always disrespects and embarrasses him in public.

My wife fights me both at home and in the public; our neighbours have known us for our frequent fightings.

“On many occasions, she tore my clothes into pieces. I do not even have peace of mind; I am always afraid,” he added.

The embattled man begged the court to end the marriage because he was tired of it and no longer in love with his wife.

“Please, terminate our marriage before Temitope sends me to an early grave,” he pleaded.

Responding, Temitope, denied all the allegations and accused Daniel of battery.

“My husband turned me into a punching bag. He derived pleasure from beating me at any slight provocation. I have scars on my body as a result of his assault on me,” she said.

The mother of three said she never threatened her husband’s life.

“I was only using the knife to scare him away from beating me and not to stab him,” she told the court.

The 42-year-old trader pleaded with the court not to grant her husband’s wish for the dissolution of their marriage because she still loved him.

How we restored calm in Isu/Utuma communal clash — Abia CP

0

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP E. Ene Okon has said the swift intervention of the command in the communal clash between Isu in Arochukwu local government area of the state and Utuma in Baise local government of Cross River State stopped further escalation of conflicts.

In an interview with ABN TV, CP Okon said the command under his leadership deployed mobile policemen to the troubled area who ensured that the clash allegedly caused by boundary dispute is dealt with.

There is a boundary dispute between Isu in Arochukwu local government of Abia State and Utuma in Baise local government of Cross River State. We have number of mobile police positioned there for over ten months and there have been no crises reported about there before.

“What we heard and saw all happened on the 3rd of January 2020, when some persons from Utuma community in Odukpani local government of Cross River state vied into Isu,the youth of isu captured them and beat them up. We took the mobile police and the DPO to the scene and they were pleading for over 2 to 3hrs for them to release them but they insisted that they want to kill one of them.
“We were able to rescue those people, we took them to the hospital and later smuggled them out to Utuma. Nothing else happened other than that.

“Then the Utuma people went back for a revenge mission in which they succeeded in killing one person and injured some. The mobile police went in there and everything was calm, there have not been any open confrontation, what happened was just a revenge mission which we curtailed in some hours” he said.

He also commended the Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu for the support he has given the command since the commencement of the operation.

“Let me appreciate the state government, since I started that operation, he has been paying them allowances on regular basis to sustain them.

“The issue came up on the security meeting on Thursday, so, the government is going to do something about it. Something concrete that will to bring a lasting solution and he has gotten in touch with the governor of cross river state with the view of finding permanent solutions to that boundary dispute in that place but right now, that place is very calm” he said.

EFCC re-arraigns 6 public officers over alleged N64.6bn police pension fraud

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday re-arraigned six public officials allegedly involved in police pension scam to the tune of N64. 6 billion in an FCT High Court Maitama.

Those re-arraigned are Atiku Abubakar Kigo; Ahmed Inuwa Wada; Mrs Veronica Ulonma Onyegbulam; Sani Habila Zira; Mrs Uzoma Cryril Attang and Christian Madubuke.

They were first arraigned before Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf, with the case number FCT/CR/64/2012 in 2013 on a 20-count charge bordering on conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.

They were then arraigned alongside Esau Dangabar, who died on July 24, 2019, in the course of the hearing. In view of Dangabar’s death, EFCC on October 17, 2019, filed a motion before the court for amendment of charge with a view to removing the name of the first defendant from the charge.

EFCC told the court that the further amended charge was in pursuant to Section 216 and 218 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

The defendant could not take their plea as counsel for the third defendant, Earnest Ikeji, drew the attention of the court to the inclusion of the name of John Yakubu Yusufu, who was convicted for the crime in 2012.

On resumed sitting of the case, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Oluwaleke Atolagbe, urged the court to admit the further amended charge dated and filed on Feb. 17.

He prayed also that the charge is read to the defendants for them to take their plea.

When the 18-count further amended charge bordering on conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, receiving gratification and disobedience of government directive was read to the defendants, they all pleaded not guilty.

EFCC alleged that the defendants conspired between January 2008 and June 2011 to commit criminal breach of trust by public officers in respect of the sum of N20. 1 billion.

The offence the anti-graft said was punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532, Laws of the FCT, Nigeria 2007.

They were also alleged to have between January 2009 and June 2011 knowingly disobeyed the order contained in the Federal Government Treasury Circular dated October 22, 2008, lawfully promulgated by the Accountant-General of the Federation.

The EFCC further alleged that the defendants converted N20.1 billion belonging to the Police Pension Office to their own use.

This offence is punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532, Laws of the FCT, Nigeria 2007, among other charges.

Following their not-guilty plea, Atolagbe asked for a date for continuation of trial, which was not opposed by all the counsel for the defendants.

Baba-Yusuf then adjourned the case until March 25 and April 21 to April 22 for the continuation of hearing.

Toke Makinwa replies Pastor Adeboye, says men should know how to cook

0

Nigerian radio personality Toke Makinwa has reacted to the comment of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye advising men not to marry women if they can’t cook.

Recall that Pastor Adeboye had said in a tweet via his verified Twitter handle that

“My sons, don’t marry a lady who cannot cook. She needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to be eating out all the time…”

The Tweet sparked an uproar on the microblogging site with many netizens criticizing the cleric while others also supported his advice.

Reacting to Adeboye’s tweet, the radio personality took to her Twitter page on Tuesday and wrote:

“Cooking is not restricted to gender, guys learn how to cook so you don’t base the entirety of picking a life partner on your belly, if you don’t want to, make enough to hire a chef. Life is too short to be triggered all the time.” she fired on Twitter.

See her Tweet below:

Meanwhile, some social media users have disagreed with Toke.

A Twitter user wrote;

Pastor adeboye who has been married for 53 years gives advice on marriage, madam Toke Makinwa who was happily divorced after 3 years in marriage is giving her opinion and you all are giving her tiri gbosa.

Better choose wisely who you follow.

“You sore losers” Abia PDP berates APGA, APC over media trial of T. A Orji and Son on alleged N500bn loot

0

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a swipe at the former governorship candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) Alex Otti and APC in the state for allegedly engaging in media trial of former Governor of the State, Sen. T.A Orji and his son Chinedum Orji over N500bn corruption allegation against them.

The party in a statement signed by the Acting Publicity Secretary, Chief Mrs Love Ezema FCIPM mni said the recent sponsorship of protest in Umuahia and Abuja by the opposition shows they are sore losers and drowned in perpetual sorrow, unmitigated anger and clutching at anything including straws just to be seen to remain politically relevant.

We have read the press releases by a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state with copious reference to one Alex Otti on the unsubstantiated allegations making the rounds in the media to the effect that Senator T.A. Orji and his son, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, both of whom are respected leaders of our great Party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), appropriated “over N500bn belonging to Abia State” to themselves, as well as the publication by an unnamed publicity secretary of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abia State, and wish to state that the press statements and subsequent funding of a protest in Umuahia and Abuja by these sore losers is a confirmation of our long held fears that APGA and APC in Abia State are political parties drowned in perpetual sorrow, unmitigated anger and clutching at anything including straws just to be seen to remain politically relevant. It is now clear that these Parties will not rest until they have sown chaos on our peaceful State.

“If not, one would have wondered how anyone in their right senses would believe such spurious allegations that have been in the public domain since 2015 and have only become an instrument of witch hunt and blackmail in the hands of cowardly political rivals and projected by those Abians who have been serially rejected both at the polls and the courts” she said.

She also stated that Sen. Orji and his son, Speaker Chinedum Orji have had robust careers in their different endeavors, saying the allegations against them have been there since 2015.

For the avoidance of doubt, while Senator T.A. Orji was a career civil servant who served meritoriously, he was also the State’s Chief of Staff before eventually becoming Governor. His son, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, apart from being a qualified engineer, has been in private business long before his father was elected Governor as one of his companies was duly registered since 2001. He won elections twice to represent his constituency and rose to become the majority leader and currently the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly.

“It is laughable that in this day and time, unscrupulous politicians with obvious dirty backgrounds are the ones engaging in media trial of others who are better than them in all ramifications. For instance, APC fielded a Senatorial candidate who was undergoing court trial for corruption and has long been convicted with the senatorial seat now in jeopardy with millions of Abians left without a representative. Similarly, the APGA faction calling for protest fielded a governorship candidate in 2019 who has been under investigation by EFCC since 2014 and indeed is a state witness in an ongoing corruption trial in court.

“We are also aware that neither Senator T.A. Orji nor the Speaker, Enyinnaya Orji, is currently under trial in any court on corruption charges and, indeed, the allegations against them are the same recycled stories dating back to 2015 and for which they have made themselves available to relevant agencies to clear their names. When did it become the law or convention for people to vacate office when allegations are made against them? As Senate President, Bukola Saraki successfully defended charges against him at the courts. Similarly, other APC and APGA legislators never resigned from office when they were accused.
“We need not remind Alex Otti and his cohorts in APC traveling this path of judicial infamy that our laws clearly states that every citizen remains innocent until proven otherwise in a competent court of law. The continued reference of Otti to the elections he lost both at the polls and at the courts is a pointer to what is sorrowing him. Abians are also aware of how he has kept on lampooning the judiciary for his losses despite pursuing his cases to the highest court of the land. This is why he is actively plotting to destabilize the state by attempting to circumvent the judicial process in a matter that has remained under investigation since 2015. This is how political vampires behave and are not surprised because his APGA faction is peopled by such unscrupulous characters.

“We urge all Abians to ignore the rants and machinations of these sore losers and join hands with the government to rapidly develop our state. We are proud of the good work being done by our elected officials at state and national levels, all of who have continued to focus on the issues that are important to the people of the state. We will not accept attempts by sore election losers to truncate the mandate of the people of the state through orchestrated media trial and sponsorship of baseless protests against those elected to work for the people of the state.

“We restate our strong belief in the ability of Senator T.A. Orji and Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji to defend themselves as the petitions against them are not only maliciously contrived but also lacking in any substance. At the appropriate time, those behind these evil plots against the people of Abia State and the media trial will be exposed” she concluded.
