Why my faith remains strong in Nigeria, democracy ― Emeka Ihedioha

0

Mr Emeka Ihedioha, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Imo, said his faith remained strong in Nigeria, its democracy and institutions, in spite of the Supreme Court judgment that removed him as governor of the state.

Ihedioha stated this on Saturday when he received members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) led by its National Chairman, Mr Uche Secondus, who paid him a solidarity visit at his Abuja residence.

Ihedioha said, though the verdict was a shock to him, he remained calm and would always take solace in God at all times.

“We are faithful believers in God and God does not sleep. This will make history in many ways and so this is a historical process, historical action, and I am sure there will be historical answers at the end of the day.

“I want to assure you that we will remain resolute and committed to the ideals of our great party.

“I want to say that that event will not put into question our faith in the Nigerian nation. It will not question our commitment to democracy, it will rather strengthen our resolve to match forward and make Nigeria a greater nation.
“I am certain that from the events of that day, Nigeria will emerge a stronger and greater country.

“I want to urge you to continue to work with all lovers of democracy across board so that we can all put our heads together and match forward,” Ihedioha said.

According to him, how the matter was settled by the Supreme Court would define the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

“I am certain that the judiciary and electoral system are well aware that they are on trial.
“What is fundamental about this is that the facts of the matters as relates to Imo state governorship election is the foundation of our democratic processes,” he added
.
Ihedioha said the election was not anout him or Imo, but about the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

He, however, said it was not time to celebrate, but rather a redefining moment for sober reflection.

Speaking earlier, Secondus urged Nigerians not to trivialise the Supreme Court judgement on Imo and that the PDP would not join issues with those he claimed deliberately and knowingly undermined the country’s democracy.

“In the case of Imo, we have more questions than answers because we can’t see the figures adding up. These are the questions agitating our minds and the minds of Nigerians.

“I want to appeal to our brothers who are on the other side, to stop trivialising these issues. They are of fundamental importance in nature.
“References are made in Sokoto, Rivers and Zamfara states. You cannot compare what happened in those states with Imo.

“The other ones are intra party. Let them come out and tell us what really happened, from the Tribunal, to the Appeal court up the the Supreme court in the 388 polling units,” Secondus said.

“The truth is what we are seeking. We are not against speaking on very respected individuals, we are saying that the figures are not adding up. Can they look into it again? ” he added.

He advised Ihedioha to be strong and not wary, as according to him, the truth would be revealed, if not now, later.

NIGERIA’S BORDER CLOSURE NOT MEANT TO PUNISH OUR NEIGHBOURS – BUHARI

1

President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday in London said that the partial closure of Nigeria’s borders is not meant to punish her neighbours, but to strengthen the country’s security and economy.

At a meeting with a select group of the Nigerian Community in the United Kingdom, the President explained that the period of closure will be used for stock-taking on threats to the nation’s security and economy.

He noted that Nigerian farmers have been celebrating the closure which has drastically reduced smuggling of agricultural produce as well as arms and ammunition.

President Buhari attributed the country’s virtual food security position to the “very good last three rainy seasons;” the federal government’s reduction in the price of fertilizers by 50 per cent and the presidential directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria not to give foreign exchange for food imports thereby saving the nations billions of naira.

Commending Nigerians in the Diaspora for their huge home remittances – more than $25 billion in 2018 – the President also lauded their individual performances in their various fields of expertise.

Explaining the achievements of his administration in implementing its three-point campaign agenda by focusing on fixing the economy, providing security and tackling corruption, the President said Nigeria’s “huge, vibrant youth population” have been encouraged to go back to the farms and are “living decent and respectable lifestyles.”

On security, he said “it is common sense that you can only run the country if it is secured,” adding that the country “has not done badly in the North East.”

Describing the havoc done by corruption to the image and economy of Nigeria as “terrible,” President Buhari said that his administration has now focused on retrieving stolen fixed assets and returning the proceeds of the sale “to the treasury through the Treasury Single Account (TSA),” so that nobody can return them back to the convicts even after his tenure.

The President congratulated the current World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua, who was the cynosure of all eyes during the meeting, on regaining his world championship belt, as well as putting Nigeria “on the world map again like Hogan Bassey.”

On his part, Joshua, who later presented his belts to the President, pledged to “stand up for Nigeria anytime you need me.”

Various speakers lauded the President’s commitment to bequeathing a lasting legacy.

A renowned research biochemist, Adebayo Olamideji, went down memory lane to recall President Buhari’s nationalistic disposition by his decision to save 1,250 Nigerian students from Oyo State studying abroad from indebtedness and shame when he was military Head of State by agreeing to pay over $6.2 million.

Comparing him to former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, Oladimeji said the President has started “turning Nigeria around for good,” urging him not to allow detractors to “grind him down.”

The meeting with the Nigerian Community was coordinated by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who described President Buhari as “diaspora-friendly,” while the President commended her for efforts in coordinating the affairs of diaspora Nigerians in different parts of the world.

Senator Hope Uzodinma has assumed office as the governor of Imo State. His victory at the supreme court was a big shock to many people.

He came a distant fourth in the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Imo. But the supreme court cut short the joy of Emeka Ihedioha who was declared winner in that election by INEC. The supreme agreed with Hope and his legal team that his votes were illegal excluded when computing the result of that election.

When it was added, he won. Nigerians who know him very well have been exposing his dirty secrets.

The former Director of Communication and Strategy during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan, Jackson Ude has taken time to compile the corruption allegations hanging on the neck of the new Imo governor.

A statement from his Twitter handle says, “HOPELESS UZOADIGHINMA: THE FACE OF A FRAUD!
Collected $12million from Nigerian Port Authority for the dredging of Calabar Channel, NEVER did the job. Got arrested, claimed HBP, was granted bail. Case on.
Issued a N200million dud check, case still with EFCC.
Ndi Imo, how far?”

PRESS RELEASE

ARREST JACKSON UDE FOR DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER.

We condemn in strongest terms the false allegation by one Jackson Ude, a journalist who accused the Executive Governor of Imo State , Senator Hope Uzodinma of Forging his University academic certificate.

These allegation is baseless , unfounded, ill-tempered and a total falsehood born-out of jealousy to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of a man that has worked so hard to always be on the path of truth and uprightness in his dealings . He is a man of impeccable character and proven integrity.

Senator Hope is a man of ‘Hope’. It is only a man without hope that engages in questionable behaviors and character because he doesn’t know what tomorrow holds for him. Governor Hope has always been on the path of honour and will never be involved in such an unspeakable act of condescending so low to forge any document, not to talk of a University degree.

It is very clear that Jackson Ude is a frustrated man without any means of livelihood cheaply hired by some disgruntled elements to cast aspersions to tarnish the good image of the Governor .

We are very much away that these senseless accusation came-up because of the Governor’s resolve to probe the financial records and dealings of past administrations. This distraction is just a cheap way of changing the narrative , but their plans is dead-on-arrival.

We would have ignored him hoping that he is bereft of fact , but because of the glaring prejudice for the government and the good people of Imo state informed our action and for posterity sake, we deem it necessary to respond to the callous and baseless assertion to save the general public from being misformed by the antics of detractors and misfits determined to misled the people.

Such write-up is not just geared towards casting aspersions on the Governor’s matchless integrity, but a conscious calculated attempt to pit his Excellency against the good people of Imo whose collective will as enshrined in the Constitution, the Governor swore to protect.

Jackson Ude should be told in plain language that despite the fact that politics is a leveller in the country , water still finds its course, Senator Hope has grown past the type of crude and local politics Jackson wants to engage him in.

We call on the security agencies especially the police to as a matter of urgency arrest Jackson Ude for false accusation , defamation of character, dissemination of false information to the public and prosecute him in accordance with the laws of the land , to serve as deterrent.

We therefore urge the Executive Governor of Imo State , Senator Hope Uzodinma to disregard the antics of his detractors and concentrate with the mandate freely given to him by Imo people to deliver democracy dividends and make Imo great.

Chief Goodluck Egwu Ibem

Haaland scores with first touch in Dortmund debut hat-trick

Erling Haaland scored with his first touch for Dortmund, before going on to complete a hat-trick, with the Norwegian striker stepping off the bench against Augsburg to show Manchester United what they missed out on.

Having become the most sought-after frontman in European football, the 19-year-old opted to continue his development in the Bundesliga.

Fellow countryman Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been hoping for a reunion at Old Trafford with a player he previously worked with when in charge of Molde.

United was snubbed, with Dortmund securing a prized signature.

They opted to ease the talented teenager into new surroundings when making a return to action after the winter break on Saturday.

Haaland was, however, to make an immediate impact after being handed his debut off the bench just before the hour mark.

He had been on the field less than three minutes when opening his goal account for Dortmund.

The youngster, who had been prolific for previous employers Red Bull Salzburg, also required just one touch in which to make his presence felt.

Court strikes out Assemblies of God suit

0

The Enugu State High Court has struck out a suit seeking to grant members of the Rev. Chidi Okorafor-led faction of the Assemblies of God possession and management of a local church at No 27 Mount Street, Awkunanaw, Enugu.

The court said it did not have the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

It also vacated an interim order that earlier granted the faction possession of the local church in suit No. E/751/2019.

Rev. Chidi Okorafor’s faction had instituted the suit on behalf of Incorporated Trustees of Assemblies of God Nigeria, Rev. David Ezeoha and six others, as plaintiffs against Rev. Donatus Onyia, Pastor Emmanuel Ikeh and four others for themselves and on behalf of members of the Assemblies of God Nigeria loyal to the embattled General Superintendent, Rev. Paul Emeka, and commissioner of police, Enugu State as respondents.

The plaintiffs asked the court for an order to take possession of management and administration of the local church.

But ruling on a notice of preliminary objection filed by members of Rev. Emeka on Monday, the presiding Judge, Justice V.C. Ajogwu, held that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case since the matter for determination was the control, management and administration of the church.

He said it was only the Federal High Court that had the jurisdiction to entertain the suit as enshrined in the constitution on matters relating to Companies and Allied Act.

“It is therefore my well-considered view that the 1st plaintiff as an Incorporated Trustee was envisaged by the Provisions of Section 251(1)(e) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and as such any dispute relating to its running, management or control shall be heard and determined exclusively by the Federal High Court. I therefore resolve this issue in the negative and hold that this court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain this suit.

“Consequently, the interim order earlier made in this case is hereby vacated. This suit is therefore struck out as this court lacks jurisdiction to entertain same. I so hold.”

The PUNCH had reported that the operatives of the Enugu State Police Command penultimate Sunday invaded the Assemblies of God Church at No. 27 Mount Street, Awkunanaw, Enugu and padlocked the church premises after it drove out worshippers.
