Pope Francis Falls Sick A Day After Praying For People With Coronavirus

Pope Francis cancelled a scheduled appearance at mass in Rome on Thursday because of “a mild ailment”, the Vatican said, the day after he appeared to be suffering a cold.

“Due to a mild ailment, he preferred to stay in the vicinity of Saint Martha’s,” the guest house at the Vatican where the 83-year old pontiff lives, chief press officer Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

The mass in question was at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, one of Rome’s biggest and largest churches.

Bruni said the Argentine’s schedule remained otherwise unchanged.

The announcement came as Italy struggles to control the largest outbreak of the coronavirus in Europe with some 400 cases.

The Vatican made no reference to the disease in its announcement.

Francis has not curtailed any of his activities, which often include mingling with crowds and shaking hands.

The pontiff, who only has one lung and suffers problems with one hip, very rarely cancels an appointment in his busy schedule.

Vatican News said the pope had earlier Thursday celebrated the daily mass at Saint Martha’s House, before meeting members of a global Catholic climate movement as planned.

Iran Vice-President Masoumeh Ebtekar Tests Positive To Coronavirus

Iran’s vice president has been diagnosed with coronavirus as the deadly disease continues to take its toll on countries around the world.

Masoumeh Ebtekar, who is Iran’s vice-president for women and family affairs, has become the latest person to be infected with the virus in the country.

According to reports, no fewer than 254 people have been infected with Coronavirus in Iran.

The Coronavirus disease, now termed COVID-2019, is said to have killed at least 26 people in Iran as the Middle East nation continues to battle its spread.

Ebtekar’s case is coming less than a week after the country’s deputy minister of health tested positive to COVID-19.

A prosecution witness, Dr. Musa A. Musa, on Thursday, February 27, 2020 narrated before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja how Shamshudeen Bala, son of the former FCT minister and now Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, made payments for three units of four bedroom semi-detatched duplexes, located in Apo and Guzape areas of Abuja in the name of two companies: Bal-Vac Mining Nigeria Limited and Diakin Telecommunications Limited.

Dr. Musa was the general managing director and chief executive officer of the Abuja Investment Company Limited at the time of the purchase of the properties.

In a statement signed by the Acting Head, Media and Publicity of the Commission, Tony Orilade and made available to ABN TV, Dr. Musa revealed that the defendant brought United States Dollar cash equivalent of N10,000,000 (Ten Million Naira) to him as part payment for the said properties which was converted into banking instrument while the remaining payments were made to the Accounts Department of the company.

Musa in his evidence-in-chief, revealed that two of the properties were sold to the defendant at the cost of N74,000,000 (Seventy-four Million Naira) each while the third was sold to his company at the cost of N66,700,000 (Sixty-six Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira).

He tendered the Bill of Deed Documents of the three properties in evidence before the court.

Earlier, another prosecution witness, Abba Alli, had revealed to the court how the defendant opened accounts for the companies in Aso Savings and Loan Plc., stating that payments were made into these accounts in his name.

Alli said he gave the account opening forms to the defendant, who in turn, filled in the necessary information and returned them to him for processing.

Justice Dimgba adjourned the matter till March 24, 2020, for the continuation of trial.

The Port Harcourt Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a blogger, Mr Dikeocha Chukwuebuka, who published a picture of a crowded open cell in his Twitter handle @TheRealDayne, claiming that it is that of Port Harcourt office of the EFCC.

The Port Harcourt Zonal Head of the Commission, Mr Usman Imam who announced the arrest while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt on Thursday, February 27, 2020 said the suspect was picked up at about 4pm on Wednesday, February 26 in the premises of a new generation bank on Ada George Road in Port Harcourt.

In a statement signed by the Acting Head, Media and Publicity of the Commission, Tony Orilade and made available to ABN TV, the arrest was a fulfillment of the vow Mr. Imam made to track and apprehend the author of the malicious tweet.

He recalled that the tweet was a “most embarrassing moment for the Commission, given that the ‘fake news’, represented the very opposite of what the EFCC stands for, as far as care of detainees is concerned”.

“I want to assure the suspect and indeed the media, that the Commission will follow through this investigation and ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law,” he said.

Imam warned social media influencers to be circumspect in using information which they have not checked to save the society from the ordeal of fake news.

A remorseful Chukwuebuka, admitted his error in publishing the picture which he said belonged to another agency. He apologized to the EFCC and his followers for the false and misleading report.

BREAKING: David Lyon Accepts Supreme Court’s Verdict On Bayelsa

Sacked Governor-Elect of Bayelsa State, Chief David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accepted the final decision of the Supreme Court on its judgement that nullified his victory at the November 16th, 2019 governorship election.

Lyon, in a statement he personally signed, said though the decision of the apex court to stick to its February 13th judgement dashed the hope of the people of the state, he accepted it in the interest of peace and the development of Bayelsa.

He appealed to the supporters of the APC, his loyalists and the people that came out en masse to vote for him at the to accept the judgement and maintain the peace.

Lyon commended the leadership of the APC at the state and national levels for their tenacity in upholding the principles of constitutional democracy.

He said: “The Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Wednesday, 26 February, 2020, reviewed the judgment it gave against us on 13th February, 2020 and decided to maintain its earlier judgment

“I am aware of the extent to which this decision has further dashed the hope of Bayelsans as it upturned the democratic mandate of the Bayelsa electorate.

“I hereby unequivocally state my decision to accept the Supreme Court verdict however distressing as it is. It is the decision of the Supreme Court, and we are all bound to accept the outcome as law-abiding citizens of this great country.

“I wish to appeal to my party faithful, my supporters, all Bayelsans and all lovers of peace and justice to accept this verdict and maintain the peace.

“While they have a right to think that this is a case of judgment without justice, I strongly appeal against all forms of violence or any conduct that threatens the peace and development of our state.

“I strongly believe that God still loves Bayelsans and will still allow His Will to come to pass in their lives.

“I seize this opportunity to thank the leadership of our party, the All Progressives Congress at the National, State , local Government and ward levels for their tenacity in upholding the ideals of constitutional democracy”.

He added: “I appeal to all Bayelsans not to shy away from participating in the governance of our dear state for the common good and wellbeing of its people.

“In the same vain, I urge the good people of the state to continue to uphold the dreams of our founding fathers in our aspiration to lead the state irrespective of party affiliations.

“Lastly, it is my resolve to continue to join forces with well-meaning individuals, institutions and organisations towards bringing the much-needed development to Bayelsa State which has bee in dire need of development”.
